Things that are really weird when you think about them

Someone said to me today that balloons are like a plastic bag of someone's breath...

I'd never thought of it like that before and to be honest it made me feel a bit nauseous!

Do you have anymore examples of things that are actually really fucking weird when you think about it?

When I was a child/teen I was obsessed with trying to work out how others observed colour.

I think science may have proved we all see it the same. But still.

My thought process was/is:

Since birth grown ups point to colours etc and tell you things. So the sky is blue. Leaves are green. Etc etc. That's just how it is.

But.

What if we swapped eyes and suddenly my pink is your blue? How do we know that's not happening.

I was really invested in that theory for a long time.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 10/04/2019 21:39

That we happily share our homes/sofas/beds with some creatures and eat others but would be horrified at a switch of those roles.

TheNemesisOfLame · 10/04/2019 21:40

Also what happens at the edges of things. At an atomic level.

If everything is trying to become stable by forming molecular bonds - where for example does a table end and air begin.

That's freaked me out for years

Boulezvous · 10/04/2019 21:40

Drinking the milk of another species

MaryPopppins · 10/04/2019 21:41

Oops just seen I'm not the only one with colours! That's good though I guess!!

Bowchicawowow · 10/04/2019 21:41

The photograph of earth from a long way away freaks me out. It’s just a blue speck in a big black space.

Shitshitshitshit · 10/04/2019 21:41

The beach - loads of people go the edge of a country and lie down!

Yes! I hate beaches, never seen the attraction. Sand gets bloody every where and the sea is just ... freaky.

What if we swapped eyes and suddenly my pink is your blue?

Oooh! What if we swapped just one eye so your left eye saw pink as pink but your right eye saw it as green?!

LilQueenie · 10/04/2019 21:41

Living in a home and having a four legged furry thing walk in and about it. You feed it, play with it, stroke it, don't speak the same language but happily enjoy its company ....it does its thing and you do yours until you both decide you want to play, walk, stroke or whatever.

That's called a man Grin

We have a lovely lovely couple next door - we live in a semi detached house.

Their house is a mirror image of ours and due to the positioning of the windows, the built in wardrobe and the en suite the only set up for the bed is in the same position as ours.

For at least 6 hours a day, if you took the lids off our houses you’d see 4 people who like each other and are lovely to each other but know very little actually about each other’s lives lying semi naked and very vulnerable about 6 metres apart.

RosemarysBush · 10/04/2019 21:41

The infinite different ways each persons life could have turned out. What about all the people alive now that I might have had relationships with?
What if that particular sperm hadn’t won the race and a completely different person was born?

Cupfullofjoy · 10/04/2019 21:41

How many species co-exist on our planet, yet one species (humans) are destroying it so rapidly after millions of years of evolution.

Humans slowly poisoning themselves and their home, Earth 🌍, through pollution.

How blue whales were once dog-like creatures.

Romantic love - the euphoria of someone's else's affection and having such affection for another. Bizarre.

The cruelty of the dark ages and mediaeval periods.

Cupfullofjoy · 10/04/2019 21:42

How SO many species

Ginlovingmumof4 · 10/04/2019 21:42

To use the letter x to represent a kiss. Other countries don’t do that. It’s like putting qqqq at the end of a message and deciding that means something loving! Weird when you think about it!

3luckystars · 10/04/2019 21:43

@Bowchicawowow

Half of our body is made up of atoms formed beyond the Milky Way. We are basically made of star dust

Can you explain this to an idiot like me?

(I thought a baby was made up of atoms made inside its mother, so unless you mean the chocolate milky way, then I am lost.)

Lemonsquinky · 10/04/2019 21:43

The80sweregreat, I think that black holes are collapsed stars. They have used up all their fuel and they collapse in on themselves, but they still have the same mass (and I think gravity,) as before. Their gravitational pull is so great that light can't escape. So at the bottom of the black hole is the star.
I have an autistic son, and at one point space was his special interest. We watched a lot of documentaries.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 10/04/2019 21:43

To use the letter x to represent a kiss

I don't know if it's the real reason, but I always assumed it's because the sound X makes is similar to the word "kiss"

ILoveMaxiBondi · 10/04/2019 21:43

There are 7.7 billion people on earth but I am the first one to see inside this orange/potato/apple etc as I slice it open.

Shock
The80sweregreat · 10/04/2019 21:44

I often wonder about language. How it started. Why we all speak different ones!
Be good if we all spoke just the one!

RoryGillmoresEvilTwin · 10/04/2019 21:45

Houses. I look at my row of terrace houses and think about all the people living their lives in these boxes.
Weird.

lololove · 10/04/2019 21:45

Death and uncertainty. - not the fright of it, just that it can happen at anytime in anyway.

You wake up, go to work, cross the road to go for some shopping and you can get hit by something and die.

That you can go on holiday and the plane could crash.

That there could be another terrorist attack that you could get caught up in.

Just the very thought that you pootle around day by day 'i'll do this this morning, I need to go here, I have to pick so and so up at 7." ... but by say 3 o'clock you might not be here.

It all sounds flippant and light like I'm making fun of it but i'm not. I often weirdly find myself thinking things like 'when it's your turn....' when you hear of weird things. There was a lady we vaguely know who was crossing a road about 2 years ago. She stepped off the curb - she was okay. Then a muppet showing off in a boy racer went through the red lights and sent her flying and the poor love never made it to the other side of the road... yet five minutes before she'd been going about her business.

I try not to let myself think about it when I catch myself doing it!

The80sweregreat · 10/04/2019 21:46

The black holes are a huge mystery. I'm amazed they have found one after so many years just theorising about it.
I can't get my head around them at all.
So much space out there.

Bowchicawowow · 10/04/2019 21:46

3LuckyStars I am no expert but basically we are all made of matter, and that matter originated from stars beyond the Milky Way. It made its way here by being blown by galactic winds.

RocketSurgery · 10/04/2019 21:46

cupfull I find that both incredible and horrifying at the same time. We know that human behaviour is making our planet uninhabitable. We know if we carry on at the rate we are then within a few generations almost all life on earth will cease to exist. We know what is causing these extinctions and yet no country is willing to make the changes needed. It seems so incomprehensible that humans could become extinct we pretend that it must be impossible.

haverhill · 10/04/2019 21:46

I read once that kissing is a stylised mimicking of the way ancient people fed their babies, i.e., chew up food and pass it mouth-to-mouth. When you kiss, you are symbolically ‘caring for/nurturing’ the other person.
This could be bullshit of course.

I find the Fibonacci Sequence both incredible and baffling.
