Not knowing shaving arms is a thing?

DH asked me do you shave your arms?

I said no, I don't shave my arms. I looked at him with my whaaa look, he then explained he'd just seen a TV advert (women's razor, she was doing her arms) and wondered how many women feel they have to shave all their limbs.

So I'm thinking if it's on a TV advert, this is a totally usual thing and I'm naive to not know?

can't ask my friends they'd think I was weird

I HAVE to shave.....everything........I am mixed race.......natural black hair.......everywhere......I shave my arms every few days 😬 tried waxing my arms and hands once.....waxing legs and bikini I can cope with but I was almost sick with the pain from waxing arms......so I run the razor over them every few days.

It really is a nightmare being fuzzy......I have always felt a bit embarassed about shaving my arms...! But.....the hair is so dark.....its got to go xx

Reminds me of a terrifying article I read once about a British glossy mag journalist who relocated to NY and was astonished to discover she was considered practically slovenly for not doing her brows multiple times a week, shaving her arms or making sure she didn't have any hairs in her nostrils - and she'd thought she as high maintenance!

Some women do shave arms, I think more usually if they have darker hair, but never done mine.

Onceuponatime21 · 03/04/2019 21:02

How can hairy arms look unfeminine?! That's depressing that you think that... narrow definitions of femininity are not helpful.

OldSpeclkledHen · 03/04/2019 21:03

Oh thank god! Thought I was some kind of freak for not shaving my arms 🙄🙄

stucknoue · 03/04/2019 21:04

It's common in the Asian community, all the waxing salons offer arms, legs, under arms and bikini as a package

EngagedAgain · 03/04/2019 21:04

Typical bloke not knowing if you shave your arms or not, 😬 😬. Also, as if there isn't enough to do already. Surely it's also best not to start it in the first place.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 03/04/2019 21:04

No. I am hairy like a monkey, and the upkeep on legs alone in summer is practically a full-time job. Waxing is useless because it’s back in a couple of days. Thankfully I live in Scotland so exposed limbs are rare!

pansydansy · 03/04/2019 21:04

My 17 year old takes really long showers. One day I clocked it at 45 minutes 😳 when she got out I asked her what the hell she was doing in there! She said it was shaving day, that meant her arms, fingers, toes, legs, armpits, fanny and arse crack 😂🤦🏻‍♀️ I couldn't believe it, she's been doing it for 2 years apparently! Tbf she has pale skin and really dark hair. I'd never dream of shaving me arms.

Susanna30 · 03/04/2019 21:11

Nope. I'm 29 and this is the first I've heard of shaving arms!

Lockheart · 03/04/2019 21:12

I have very pale skin but dark hair on my arms, its very noticeable and makes me very self conscious, especially because it grows quite densely and gets quite long. I tend to shave it in the summer when wearing short sleeves. In winter I always ensure I wear long sleeves to cover it anyway but in summer it's too hot to do that!

Most of my friends have quite pale, short or fine hair on their arms and so they don't shave it because it's barely noticeable, and tbh I think that's true for the majority of the population in the UK.

But if your arms legitimately look like a hairy man's then it's not as easy just to shrug it off and proclaim it unnecessary.

WatchingTheWheels85 · 03/04/2019 21:13

Yes also my fingers and toes Blush

tribalmotherofthree · 03/04/2019 21:15

I shave my arms... I can't quite remember why I started, think it was the same time I did my legs, but I seem to remember just assuming that it was what people did. It's only recently I've noticed that it isn't the norm for most.

Butchyrestingface · 03/04/2019 21:19

I’ve been shaving arms and legs since the age of 13. Would have done so from age 8, when other kids started telling me how disgusting they were, had I been allowed.

Lolwhat · 03/04/2019 21:21

I always shave my arms, always have, didn’t know it was a rare thing😂

steff13 · 03/04/2019 21:23

I don't shave my arms. I have olive skin and very dark hair, but somehow I don't have hairy body parts. My arm hair is barely visible, and my leg hair grows really slowly. My mom had the same complexion, and she always said she could shave her legs twice a day.

SherlockSays · 03/04/2019 21:48

I've shaved my arms since I was 14.

ShabbyAbby · 03/04/2019 21:57

I have never shaved my arms. Thankfully although the rest of my hair is very dark and skin pale so do a lot of bleaching/plucking/waxing/shaving in general, my arm hair is pale. I think it's due to the extra sun exposure and wearing tight sleeves wears some of it away too (like sandpaper) as it does on knees and things. Although, it's getting longer recently and I have wondered if I'll need to start doing it.

CaptainButtock · 03/04/2019 21:58

The only person I know that shaved their arms was a neurotic/anoroxic girl I was in 6th form with . Sad.
Second what someone else said about these companies trying to make us neurotic about our bodies so we buy more pointless shite (razors etc)

Shazafied · 03/04/2019 22:01

I’ve red hair and very very fair hair on my arms which grows really long and catches the light / looks almost silvery. I hate it and shave it off. It grows back and takes a while to get noticeable again (can’t see it when short and don’t seem to have issues with stubble). So for me it’s worth doing every couple of weeks to not have long silvery hairs all over my arms. Also shave top lip for same reason.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 03/04/2019 22:02

First I heard of shaving arms was when I had a good friend at work in the early nineties, she was Turkish and said it was cultural. She did have very dark hair, but so do I and I can rarely be bothered to shave my legs let alone go further. Totally up to the individual I guess.

MsAwesomeDragon · 03/04/2019 22:02

I discovered this a few years ago when some of my pupils were talking about it. Those kids must be mid twenties now I think. They all thought it was perfectly normal and I was the odd, out of step and old-fashioned teacher (I wasn't even thirty at that point!). They did make the point that women shave their legs all the time and nobody comments, but their arms are on display a lot more often than their legs so why wouldn't they shave those too.

Roomba · 03/04/2019 22:04

It never occurred to me to shave my arms. I don't have hairy arms though. My friend used to, but she has PCOS and had thick black hair on her forearms (more than most men would have) and was bullied mercilessly over it at school.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 03/04/2019 22:04

I don't shave my arms or upper legs at all. My lower legs and armpits her shaved about once a month if I can be arsed and my fanjo gets a full veet cream remover once a year when I go on holiday.
I'm very lazy and don't really care about body hair, if dp had a problem with it I'm sure he would tell me, and I would tell him where the door is Wink

Fuppy · 03/04/2019 22:41

I think hairy forearms look really unfeminine.

And yet so many women defy nature by growing hairs on their chin, upper lip, legs arms armpits and unmentionables. When will Biology realise that women don't have body hair?! 🙄

Thurmanmurman · 03/04/2019 22:43

I do in summer when they’re out!
