Not knowing shaving arms is a thing?

HarrysOwl · 03/04/2019 19:13

DH asked me do you shave your arms?

I said no, I don't shave my arms. I looked at him with my whaaa look, he then explained he'd just seen a TV advert (women's razor, she was doing her arms) and wondered how many women feel they have to shave all their limbs.

So I'm thinking if it's on a TV advert, this is a totally usual thing and I'm naive to not know?

can't ask my friends they'd think I was weird

I did when I was about 9 and the hair has never grown back 🤷🏼‍♀️ Don’t know why that’s not worked for anywhere else on my body!!

RosaWaiting · 03/04/2019 19:46

dark hair, fair skin, lots of arm hair - so been doing this since i was a teen.

I would guess there's a lot more women doing it than you realise. It's sad isn't it - feeling we have to hide it from teenage to ....well, I'm not sure really.

GlitterPixie · 03/04/2019 19:46

I don’t but I know quite a few who do

katseyes7 · 03/04/2019 19:47

l worked with a young and extremely attractive young woman who had very dark hair. ln Summer when she came to the office bare legged, her legs were hairless. But when she wore short sleeves, her forearms were very, very hairy. She wore lovely bracelets which made it more obvious in a way. l just found it a bit odd that she removed the hair on her legs but not her arms, which was much more noticeable. Each to their own! l'm very lucky. l'm very fair and l just have fine 'fluff' on my arms.

SongforSal · 03/04/2019 19:49

I have done this since about 14? This is a personal choice, as I like my arms to be smooth, I just feel better for it.

PenCreed · 03/04/2019 19:50

I wax mine. I have dark hair and very pale skin. It just looks better! Plus the regrowth is finer (why it’s not finer on my thighs/bikini line remains an irritating mystery).

DarkDarkNight · 03/04/2019 19:53

I’ve just seen that advert today and wondered the same. It’s not a thing as far as I’m aware, and I wouldn’t want stubbly regrowth on my arms.

I know some people who have really dark hair who wax, but I think most people just leave it.

tor8181 · 03/04/2019 19:54

i dont shave anything and havent for well over 25 years, and im very plae with jet black hair

because of severe PCOS i have very fast hair growth that is thick so say i shave legs/privates bare in the morning by night time they will be half back

as a 24 hour carer i just dont have the time so i dont bother

its never stopped me going swimming or wearing what i want(dont wear dresses or skirts anyway)

i do have to shave my chin twice a day though as i get stubble in places and it itches

VixenAndCub · 03/04/2019 19:56

I've seen the advert and I was so confused. I knew about underarms but never the top of your arms.

I don't think I'll ever shave there. It's so light it's hard to see anyway, if I start to shave it it might grown back darker and thicker. (I'm not sure if that's just a myth though...)

I already hate shaving my legs and feeling like a cactus when it's overdue, let alone on my arms too 😆

Though truthfully I'm not the much feminine of girls. I only shave what I thought was the 'main' things (underarms, private area and legs from knee down. Yes, I don't shave my thigh. Again, it's light and barely visible).

Whatisthisfuckery · 03/04/2019 19:56

I have thick dark hair but I don’t shave my arms, and I have a lot of arm tattoos. I don’t shave anywhere else either and I don’t see why I should. If hair wasn’t supposed to be there it wouldn’t grow.

TowerRavenSeven · 03/04/2019 19:56

I always have. I have fair hair but my arms were really hairy. I went to a concessions stand after swimming once when I was ten. It was manned by a gorgeous teen boy. I had my wet arm on the counter and he took my arm hair and (gently) made it stand straight up. I was mortified! I’ve shaved ever since and that was 46 years ago!
The hair comes back in soft.

crimsonlake · 03/04/2019 19:56

Do people have hairy upper legs?

AlunWynsKnee · 03/04/2019 19:58

Dd shaves her arms. She's 12 and was getting picked on for hairy arms :(

PleaseEmployMe · 03/04/2019 20:07

Oh this worries me. DD (7) has started commenting on how hairy she is. I think I've put her off for a bit because she hates it when my legs are spikey. I knew one person at (boarding) school who shaved her arms way back in the day but haven't come across anyone else who does.

I've pale skin and dark hair, never dared to shave my arms incase it looks worse. I have to shave my legs every day in the summer, could never get on with epilating because it takes so long and grows back within a week.

Neverender · 03/04/2019 20:12

I do - I used to absolutely hate my hairy arms...takes no longer than doing my armpits but makes me sooooo happy. It's for me, no one else.

Neverender · 03/04/2019 20:13

Why not if it makes you miserable? It's a simple, pain free solution to something I used to agonise over as a teen. Job done.

theSnuffster · 03/04/2019 20:13

I shave my arms more than I shave my legs. I started as a teen so maybe 15 years ago. The hair was thick, long, very dark, and somehow seemed to be patchy?! I was picked on for it so one day just shaved it off. I've had to keep up with it but I hate that.

SerenDippitty · 03/04/2019 20:14

I don’tshave my arms. The hair on them is fair anddowny and I see nothing wrong with it. For the past few years during the sipummer months though, I have noticed a very high number of women/ girls with hairless arms and do wonder if it is a thing.

megletthesecond · 03/04/2019 20:15

Of course crimson.
As soon as I was 14 my life revolved around hair removal.

WonderTweek · 03/04/2019 20:17

I have large tattoos on my arms and I occasionally epilate over them because they look better smooth. It only takes a few minutes and the hairs take months to return. I can completely understand why people shave their arms but based on my experience I would recommend epilating as the hairs stay away for longer and don't come back all prickly. Halo

Undies1990 · 03/04/2019 20:18

I saw the advert and was horrified. No, it's not normal to shave your arms and i am worried about young girls thinking it is what they should be doing.

Ok101 · 03/04/2019 20:20

My sil does they are very very dark. I dint because they are very fair. Just do what you are comfortable with

Ringdonna · 03/04/2019 20:20

It is a thing at my DD school too along with everything else Hmm

IHaveBrilloHair · 03/04/2019 20:21

I epilate mine, have done for years.
My body, my choice.

Meandwinealone · 03/04/2019 20:23

People who shave. Seriously get a wax.
Would you shave your eyebrows?
And legs are different. Unless you spend your entire life with bare legs. Which if you do I would say the same. WAX
