Peeing in hotel kettles?!

mnahmnah · 01/04/2019 18:02

Me, DH and DC have just checked into an airport hotel, flying in the morning. First thing I do is put the kettle on for a cup of tea. DH pulls a face and says ‘urgh, I wouldn’t use that, people pee in the kettles!’. I told him not to be so ridiculous and proceeded to drink my cup of tea, although all the while thinking of pee. Which rather ruined it anyway.

Am I BU for using it? Or is he being ridiculous? Is peeing in kettles actually a thing?! And does it vary from say, um, a Travelodge or the Radisson Blu?!

IME it's sleepwalkers who are the main culprits. I found a naked guy outside my office once.

Only once @Biancadelrioisback? 😄

I've been a night manager and it's really common for drunk people to get up for the loo and go out the wrong door...... Once you've got them a towel or something to cover up, got an emergency key and back to the room, you then play hunt the pee, chairs and plant pots are favoured recepticles.

Sewfrickinamazeballs · 01/04/2019 20:50

DH once stayed at a hotel that was evacuated in the middle of the night as a family in one of the rooms tried to boil a chicken in the kettle.

Pinkbells · 01/04/2019 20:53

one told two full boil and water dumps
I promise I am not being pedantic, but I read this a dozen times and still don't understand! Genuinely interested in what it should read!

Brilliantidiot · 01/04/2019 21:22

@Pinkbells

I read that as boil the kettle twice, changing the water between boils.

daisychain01 · 01/04/2019 21:50

Nope, never heard of that one.

DH has mentioned someone heating up a pizza in the hotel trouser press.

And heating up a vindaloo in the kettle.

MochaToGo · 01/04/2019 22:02

Rinse it out. Yeah, it's not a very nice thought, but even if someone has peed in it, it's not going to kill you. After all, the water you are putting in the kettle was once someone's wee (probably several times).

EKGEMS · 02/04/2019 00:51

No-people pee in the shower your husband must be day drinking

IAmNotAWitch · 02/04/2019 03:24

It is a lot easier to just not worry about this stuff.

I don't, have traveled the world. Never gotten sick, never had a problem.

TBH I think it is because we don't worry about this stuff.

LilQueenie · 02/04/2019 04:09

I remember it happening to Rik Mayall and Ade Edmonson by a pair of comedians who knew they were in the room after them. Hated them for that.

jameswong · 02/04/2019 04:35

You haven't lived if you haven't taken a dump in the hotel kettle!

HennyPennyHorror · 02/04/2019 04:49

I googled and an article from the sun came up and it said one man boils his undies in the kettles! It's a thing!

StoppinBy · 02/04/2019 05:05

Ick, I can get over the pee in the kettle but I can't get past using dirty towels to dry the bathroom or even worse, the cups!

People put their toothbrushes on the bench and the staff may have wiped it down with the towel someone dried their butt crack on! That is foul. As for drying cups/cutlery/plates etc - WTH is up with that! That is seriously disgusting and disrespectful to your clients! Anyone who would do that is just plain wrong!

Treefloof · 02/04/2019 05:14

I thought most hotel rooms were en suite? Surely much harder to piss in a kettle than a toilet
I dont think its done because they suddenly need to and can get to the loo quick enough. Likely just because they can and they think it funny.

Happynow001 · 02/04/2019 05:29

Urgghh!! This all sounds grim and a reminder to bring my own travel kettle with me when I'm staying in a hotel/B&B.

BTW if your DH knew/thought this why didn't he say BEFORE you got go the hotel or bring his own kettle?? 🤢

TheSerenDipitY · 02/04/2019 06:18

people do fun things in motels and hotels
we once went to clean a room and it had small fridges set at waist height in a wall unit, my team mate opened the fridge door to find it full of vomit, that was now dribbling out of the fridge and down the wall unit onto the carpet... that was fun
lots of people use face flannels to wipe their ass after taking a dump, sometimes to mix it up they might shit in the bath tub, again FUN!
and to really mix it up, one room we had to clean had used condoms left where they had landed, team mate had an anxiety attack after putting her hand on one ( in the aids days) freaking out that she now had aids and had to be sent home.... FUN!
lots of fun stuff like that can happen, weirdly i had never found a piss filled jug/kettle, and yes we had to clean and empty and polish them and wind the cord up and place on top so it did get thoroughly inspected

pinegreen · 02/04/2019 06:33

Honestly I can’t get too worked up and I stay around 50 nights a year in hotels. Boil it once and move on. I do ditch those decorative throws on beds though - they are basically jizz towels and absolutely minging.

Most revolting thing I noticed recently in a hotel (a Hilton) was a multi year collection of nail clippings hidden between the bed and bedside table. They’d never pulled the bed out and vacuumed. I’d dropped an earring down there.

If you’ve ever sat down on the bus, tube or a public bench then you’ve got traces of faeces, urine and worse on your coat, unfortunately.

travellinglighter · 02/04/2019 06:49

Shared a hotel room with a mate onc who did pee in the kettle. Too lazy to walk ten feet to the bathroom.

Mummaaon · 02/04/2019 07:04

Apparently it's known people clean their knickers kettles Envy

Happynow001 · 02/04/2019 07:12

Is that person still a mate?

ChrisPrattsFace · 02/04/2019 10:05

@TellItLikeItReallyIs

Yep. And vomit. In the microwaves too!
It’s a five star luxury hotel too. I changed my opinion on people after that job 😂

BarbaraofSevillle · 02/04/2019 10:21

That's just what I was going to ask Noob. I would have thought that hotels would take the cups and teaspoons away to wash in the kitchen rather than washing them in the room, using the cloth that has just been used to clean the toilet and then drying them with a used bath towel.

When the room is prepped for a new guest, the cups and spoons are replenished from the trolley.

Hygiene rules are so strict that sort of thing just wouldn't be allowed. And I know that people don't always follow rules, but they do seem to be quite strict about this sort of thing. The caterer we use at work always makes a big thing about having to take his plates away to put in the dishwasher - our Office Martyr sometimes washes them because she has a weird compulsion about unwashed crockery but he always tells her not to bother because he has to put them in his dishwasher anyway.

Ribbonsonabox · 02/04/2019 10:30

Whenever I've stayed anywhere the kettle is always empty so I presumed they got emptied by the cleaning staff before each new guest? Presumably to prevent anyone drinking piss lol

LeesPostersAreInFrames · 02/04/2019 10:59

I'm amused by the person who thinks that a hotel room coffee maker would be more hygienic than a kettle. Coffee makers are much harder to reach all the bits to clean, and it's really common for mould to develop. I'm much more picky about using a coffee maker I don't know than I am about a kettle I can see fully inside and rinse/boil.

I'm gutted to hear about the cups though. I thought they were all taken to the kitchen to be put through the dishwasher. Hopefully they were in most of the places I've stayed in, I've seen an awful lot of trolleys with trays of clean mugs on....

PregnantSea · 02/04/2019 11:04

This is so upsetting. I really hope it's not true. Either way I will never be able to use a hotel kettle again.

Otherpeoplesteens · 02/04/2019 11:14

Don't touch the TV remote control then. Not unless you want semen traces from multiple previous guests on your hands.

I read that in a hygiene report.
