Peeing in hotel kettles?!

mnahmnah · 01/04/2019 18:02

Me, DH and DC have just checked into an airport hotel, flying in the morning. First thing I do is put the kettle on for a cup of tea. DH pulls a face and says ‘urgh, I wouldn’t use that, people pee in the kettles!’. I told him not to be so ridiculous and proceeded to drink my cup of tea, although all the while thinking of pee. Which rather ruined it anyway.

Am I BU for using it? Or is he being ridiculous? Is peeing in kettles actually a thing?! And does it vary from say, um, a Travelodge or the Radisson Blu?!

Erm, I work with someone who’s married to an Environmental health officer and whilst having a rather random conversation at work, he mentioned this as his wife came across it quite often, even in the not so budget hotels. With hindsight I should have asked more, but needless to say, now don’t drink from any hotel kettle or mug!

TotalNoob · 01/04/2019 18:22

Hotel housekeeper - never seen or heard of this. Plus we empty and clean them between guests anyway.

Tbh judging by the amount of pee I clean up off the toilet seat and floor I’d be surprised if any guests at our hotel were a good enough aim to do it into a kettle Grin

PCohle · 01/04/2019 18:22

Who lives their lives thinking like that?

Isn't it enormously stressful imagining the bodily fluids that could conceivably have touched everything you ever use?

I'd press on, you're boiling it anyway Grin

gauntletthrown · 01/04/2019 18:24

I read on here about people boiling their underwear in the hotel kettle if they've forgot the spare pair...

Not had a cuppa from a hotel kettle since!

miaCara · 01/04/2019 18:26

My cousin in law is a jack the lad type and once we were discussing this sort of caper round the table. He laughingly admitted that this is something 'the lads' have done on stag do's -although usually these are in prague or Benidorm type places. He is in a rugby team so some of them are from that but most of the rest are from school-so lots of professional /skilled working men.
So the result is that we do the sterilizing boil and chuck method of cleaning the kettle. I take my own cups anyway since hotel ones are usually too small .

Probably comes from times when you didn’t have an en-suite bathroom so no loo and needed an emergency receptacle.

LordVoldetort · 01/04/2019 18:26

I heard this on MN and I think a few people said that it happens 🤮
I don’t drink out of them just in case

Chocolateisfab · 01/04/2019 18:30

I had a trial at a posh boutique city hotel. As a reputable cleaner I decided not to put my name to such a place.
Drying cups etc with used bath towels.
Polishing shower cubicles with used towels was also the norm.
Grim.

Bankofenglandfiver · 01/04/2019 18:32

I Change the water and boil it, then throw out and start again. Every time.

makingmammaries · 01/04/2019 18:32

@MissConductUS, you think people can’t pee in coffee machines?

mnahmnah · 01/04/2019 18:32

I have to say, I’m rather impressed by people boiling their underwear. Not quite the point, but it’s a good idea! Not making me feel any better...

I saw a documentary once about cleaning in hotels and it showed cups being washed with a cloth that had just cleaned the sink and toilet Shock I therefore always wash cups with boiling water while in a hotel.

mnahmnah · 01/04/2019 18:33

I did think the same about the coffee machine comment! But having never used one I thought I may be missing a key difference?!

Toddler is currently washing himself in the bath with one of the mugs. What have I done?!

OMG. In oneway I am glad you mentioned it. In another way its just another in the list of worries I now have when we go somewhere like that, which will make DH think I am mad when I start rinsing out the kettle just in case. Or refusing to drink the tea because he will refuse to check it first. First world probs I guess.

MrsJBaptiste · 01/04/2019 18:36

First thing I do when I get to a hotel is check the kettle for a poo - not mine I hasten to add! I read somewhere once about groups of lads (and girls no doubt) thinking it was funny to have a shit in the kettle and it's always stayed with me!

MissConductUS · 01/04/2019 18:36

MissConductUS, you think people can’t pee in coffee machines?

I suppose they could, but doing so is not even an urban legend here, so I doubt it would occur to anyone to do so.

Ellenborough · 01/04/2019 18:42

When I was about 20 my boyfriend at the time stayed in a hotel while he was on a business course and he told me with great delight that he'd pee'ed in the kettle.

I have absolutely NO idea how/why this ever became a thing, and I'm sure that the chambermaids are told to check the kettles so surely they would know who the culprits were and charge them accordingly?

Anyway, it's never put me off using hotel kettles since but I can say with heavy heart that it's true - some idiots do piss in hotel kettles.

Mummyoflittledragon · 01/04/2019 18:43

Omg 😱

chillpizza · 01/04/2019 18:45

It’s washing dirty underwear in kettles and never ever use the cups unless they are wrapped in plastic wrap brand new. They are washed and dried with the dirty towel from the previous quest just as it’s ised to wash the sink/bath etc.

ChrisPrattsFace · 01/04/2019 19:00

I used to work in a luxury hotel and lodges. Regularly found that and worse in kettles... and pans in the lodges.
Unfortunately.

MissConductUS · 01/04/2019 19:00

I'm pretty sure you can't wash your dirty underwear in a coffeemaker. Grin

TellItLikeItReallyIs · 01/04/2019 19:00

If you can think of it, someone somewhere will have done it.

How common it is is a different point.

TellItLikeItReallyIs · 01/04/2019 19:01
