To think my child is a bit odd?

She mixes her food together before she eats it. She’s just had a pasta Bolognese for lunch, mixed the sauce in with the pasta then put cheese on it.

Yesterday at Nursery she mixed her peas in with her mash, had the sausages cut up, mixed them into the gravy then pour the gravy and sausage mix over the mash (Nursery Manager told me as she finds it funny).

She eats a good variety, isn’t overly fussy and is happy enough to eat the mixed food but won’t eat it if it’s unmixed.

AIBU to think she’s a bit odd? Grin

Light-hearted btw, in case anyone needed to guess.

But you're meant to mix the sauce into the pasta... and who wouldn't mix their central into the milk?
Who's really the odd one here?

AnnaMagnani · 28/03/2019 12:34

She's weird.

Even at 43 I'm not totally convinced food should touch each other.

Steamedbadger · 28/03/2019 12:35

One of mine does that. It's rank and also means I can't nick the leftovers off her plate

Amongstthetallgrass · 28/03/2019 12:35

Are you telling me there are weirdos out there who dont mix their sauce into their pasta?? shock so they’re eating sauceless pasta at some points in the meal?

If they are anything like my Nan (who is very British) they will twist the pasta around the fork then dip it in to the sauce piled on the top of the pasta Grin

ILoveMaxiBondi · 28/03/2019 12:36

Shock whaaaat?? That sounds ever so polite! Grin

JessieMcJessie · 28/03/2019 12:39

You’re crazy. That is how you eat pasta and sauce. Italians have spent thousands of years perfecting exactly the right pasta shapes to act as the best vehicles for the different types of sauces. Why go to all that effort if you’re not going to mix them together?

Oh and before you ask, it is also normal to spread butter on toast and dip soldiers into an egg.

sugarbum · 28/03/2019 12:40

YABU about the pasta. Its supposed to be mixed.

I have one mixer and one separator.

DS2 mixes stuff into a disgusting pile of mush then covers the lot in ketchup
DS1 works his way through each thing individually, starting off at 'most gross (veg)

Angellucy07 · 28/03/2019 12:41

I have one child who does this, and another who likes to keep all her food separate.

Coffeebean76 · 28/03/2019 12:41

Why oh why would you not mix?

Otherwise you’re eating mouthfuls off plain unadorned boring pasta and mouthfuls of sauce on its own?

Cereal which isn’t mixed properly in milk is just dry cereal- gross surely ?

tattiehat · 28/03/2019 12:42

My niece does this and she's 20!

TeddyIsaHe · 28/03/2019 12:43

Dd LOVES mixing things, but hates food when it’s mixed up. As you can imagine, meal times are especially fun at the moment!

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 28/03/2019 12:44

Is anyone else wondering if they are the OP's daughter.

Everything you have said she does is normal. Hmm

It's normal to mix the sauce and pasta.
Its normal to eat the peas, sausages and mash together.
It's normal to stir the milk and cereal in the bowl.

If your daughter is odd then surely the majority of the population who do the same are also odd. Did you ever stop to think that you were the odd one for not doing these things? Smile

SosigDog · 28/03/2019 12:47

It’s really bad manners to mix food on your plate. The food has been served and you eat it as it comes. Chewing and mixing happens in a closed mouth, not in public view. I’d be putting a stop to that behaviour ASAP. At perhaps 3 she probably doesn’t know any better but it’ll be embarrassing as she gets older.

BlueSkiesLies · 28/03/2019 12:48

Are you telling me there are weirdos out there who dont mix their sauce into their pasta?? shock so they’re eating sauceless pasta at some points in the meal?

DP won't mix his in.

He spends aboslutly ages taking a bit of pasta and ensuring he has the right amount oif sauce on it fro mthe top pile of sauce to ensure he doens;t run out of sauce.

Meanwhile I am getting increasingly annoyed and want to scream JUST MIX IT IN AND EAT THE FUCKING PASTA

Same with curry and rice, chill and rice, anything like that. Drives. Me. Bonkers.

TeddyIsaHe · 28/03/2019 12:49

Oh ffs 😂 a three year old without impeccable manners!! Stirring food no less! Blimet, you must be fun at parties.

FrozenMargarita17 · 28/03/2019 12:50

My mum does that and she's 56 🤷‍♀️

JessieMcJessie · 28/03/2019 12:50

SosigDog do you and OP come from the same weird alien planet?

TeddyIsaHe · 28/03/2019 12:50

@JessieMcJessie 😂😂

starsurge · 28/03/2019 12:51

Go to any top Italian restaurants and the pasta comes to your table with the sauce already mixed in. YABU.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 28/03/2019 12:52

The thought of not mixing the pasta sauce in is just bizarre!

Foods taste better when together. My DCs do have a tendency to eat all of one item at a time when they eat other meals which I find bizarre as DH and I both put several bits of food on a fork together usually.

Megan2018 · 28/03/2019 12:53

I'm the exact opposite - I eat everything separately and I don't think it touching, let alone mixed in.

@WisdomOfCrowds
I eat exactly like your partner. I start with my least favourite and then work in from that. It is apparently a very childlike trait that most people grow out of. I'm 41 though...

SosigDog · 28/03/2019 12:53

Sauce is supposed to be “ through” the pasta
You mix it in the pan before you serve it up. You don’t mix it on the plate.

GinisLife · 28/03/2019 12:54

Peas and mash are just the best mixed together (with 1/2lb of Lurpack on top 😂). I'm 58 and still mix my food together.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 28/03/2019 12:54

It’s really bad manners to mix food on your plate. The food has been served and you eat it as it comes.

How is it bad manners? Are you seriously suggesting I should eat the sauce first and end my meal by eating plain pasta? If so sod manners, food tastes better when you mix it together. It all ends up in the same place anyway so why not mix it up first. Grin

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 28/03/2019 12:55

The only foods which need to be properly segregated on a plate is beans and eggs.
