To think my child is a bit odd?

She mixes her food together before she eats it. She’s just had a pasta Bolognese for lunch, mixed the sauce in with the pasta then put cheese on it.

Yesterday at Nursery she mixed her peas in with her mash, had the sausages cut up, mixed them into the gravy then pour the gravy and sausage mix over the mash (Nursery Manager told me as she finds it funny).

She eats a good variety, isn’t overly fussy and is happy enough to eat the mixed food but won’t eat it if it’s unmixed.

AIBU to think she’s a bit odd? Grin

Light-hearted btw, in case anyone needed to guess.

I think you're the odd one of you find that odd OP Grin

I love mash mixed with peas, sausages and brown sauce! I thought everyone mixed the sauce into the pasta. AND why don't you mix milk and cereal together? Surely you'd end up with some dry cereal if you don't mix it 🤔

JessieMcJessie · 28/03/2019 12:55

Here’s a tip. Instead of starting with your leat favourite thing, why not simply prepare or choose your meals to contain only things that you like?

Twotinydictators · 28/03/2019 12:56

My DH does this, to ensure he get the ratio of sauce to pasta etc. just right! When eating something like a roast he spends ages getting a little bit of everything on his fork for every single bite Confused

Serenity45 · 28/03/2019 12:59

I do this! Always mix peas/mash etc as I like to taste everything together rather than separately. With cottage / shepherd's pie I mix it all together too. If I have a tuna & cheese jacket potato I have to make sure that ALL of the spud is mixed in with all of the toppings.

Perfectly normal Grin

SosigDog · 28/03/2019 12:59

SosigDog do you and OP come from the same weird alien planet?

I was just taught proper table manners. Don’t mix on the plate. Chew with your mouth closed. Swallow your food before taking a drink. Scoop soup away from you. Dont cut up all your food at once - cut one piece and eat it, then cut another piece. Don’t butter all your bread at once - tear off a piece, butter and eat it, then tear off another piece and repeat. It’s shocking how many adults don’t have basic table manners and eat like pigs.

AryaStarkWolf · 28/03/2019 13:00

I mix most of my food too. I thought everyone mixed spag bol though

AryaStarkWolf · 28/03/2019 13:01

Hmm
Deadringer · 28/03/2019 13:01

I don't think that's odd. I put a bit of everything on my fork because I like all the tastes together but she is too young to do that I guess so she mixes it, makes sense. When my sil has a roast dinner, usually chicken, veg, roasties and gravy, she mushes it all up together in a pile, it looks rank. And she is 50!

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 28/03/2019 13:02

There a very wide gap between eating with table manners and eating like pigs. Mixing your food up is not an indication that you have not been taught correct table manners. I think your post is very judgemental, why do you care how other people eat, personally I don't pay that much attention as I am too busy eating my own food.

TeddyIsaHe · 28/03/2019 13:03

@SosigDog what! Who has time to scoop soup away from them whilst buttering mouthfuls of bread?

RomanyQueen1 · 28/03/2019 13:03

The Italians mix the sauce with the pasta, it's how you eat it.
But if you have an odd child congratulations, they're the best, I have one Grin

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 28/03/2019 13:04

@SosigDog she's three, and actually if the pasta and sauce had been mixed in the pan she wouldn't have to do it on her plate. Why would anyone want to eat plain pasta, it must go cold and congeal very quickly. I wouldn't mix things on my plate bit I might put a little of separate items on one fork to eat. I love to cook and the best food is about flavour combination, you don't get that rigidly eating a pea, followed by a piece of carrot, followed by a piece of chicken etc.

It’s really bad manners to mix food on your plate.
Not in all circumstances, some food is suppose to be mixed in your bowl.

TheGoogleMum · 28/03/2019 13:05

I have been known to mix. If it truly tastes good together then it should taste good together all at once right? Sometimes it's about disguising less pleasant flavours a bit though too (peas into mashed potato is one I do for this reason. I don't hate peas but don't really enjoy them and mash is much nicer). I used to put all of roast dinner components inside a Yorkshire pudding drowned in gravy as a kid (I was a super fussy eater and wouldn't eat it otherwise)

FilthyforFirth · 28/03/2019 13:05

I wish my DS ate as well as your DD, mixed or not!

TeddyIsaHe · 28/03/2019 13:06

Sosig chill out! Honestly, what a weird thing to get so het up about.

JessieMcJessie · 28/03/2019 13:07

I think that you may be Eleanor Oliphant’s mother SosigDog.

SosigDog · 28/03/2019 13:08

SosigDog she's three
And she’s too young to know any better. I already said that, you don’t need to repeat what I said. What shocks me is how many adults admit to doing it too! Do what you want in private but you should really have decent manners when you eat in public.

slashlover · 28/03/2019 13:09

What difference does it make how you scoop your soup?

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 28/03/2019 13:09

The Hungry Horse chain do a Yorkshire pudding wrap vexactly like this, so you can get horseradish all over it. Mmmm.

PortiaCastis · 28/03/2019 13:10

Good manners include not gawping at others while you're being a perfect expert finding your mouth while looking down your nose

Justheretogiveaviewfrommyworld · 28/03/2019 13:10

Not weird to me OP.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 28/03/2019 13:11

And actually I think you'll find most people chew with their mouth closed, don't drink/talk with a mouthful of food, out for dinner yes I'd butter my bread in the way you suggest. Just to horrify you in about to have soup for lunch with a slice of bread, I'm going to butter it in the kitchen before it even makes it to my plate!

TiredTodayZzzz · 28/03/2019 13:12

Me and my mum were just talking about this yesterday! We both put the Bolognese on top of the pasta but my stepdad and brother mix it in.

I have lots of weird food habits, only certain bits of my meal can be covered with sauce etc. I'm definitely weird when it comes to food.
