Buying a new car

Not really an aibu but posting for traffic.

I have just started a job in the community and my car is playing up so I'm going to buy one on Friday but have no idea what car I want.

Im looking ideally something that is good on petrol, reliable and not too big. What does everyone drive?

Check some on line reviews such as What Motor and Auto car. On some sites you can key in your requirements and get suggestions that take in reliability and running costs.
In our family the most reliable cars have been VWs and Toyotas. But there will be as many suggestions from MNers as there are cars!
Above all test drive a few makes. A couple of years ago I set my heart on a particular car, but found the driving position, for me, dreadful.

Just googled the car, that looks like a nice car. I'm driving a Renault Clio and it's horrible.

I had my heart set on a fiat 500 but I went in a friends and it was so rattly and it didn't feel like a nice drive in it so put me off

I have a 1.2L Fiat 500 and I absolutely love it. It's a shame you didn't enjoy driving it!

I recently upgraded from a Renault Clio to a Hyundai i30 (the newer shape) and I’m impressed with it so far.

My job is dependent on driving and I have always had good experiences with VW/Skoda cars. The TDI engine is very efficient IME.

Skoda Fabia Estate. Not massive but have plenty of boot space, are cheap to run and are usually pretty comfy too.

I have a VW Tiguan but have had a Fiat 500 as a hire car loads of times and it’s brilliant! No you don’t get a lot of boot space but cruising around the Cote d’Azur in a convertible 500 really put a smile on my face. I’d disagree that they rattle, maybe something was wrong with your friend’s. It would be top of my list for a small car anyway, maybe it’s worth another test drive before you discount it?

Fiesta. Best car I've ever had. Downsized to have something cheap to insure for DS, but never upsized again because I love it so much. Ecoboost engine is amazing.

My friend has been hiring a lot of cars recently and he likes the Ford Fiesta best and then the VW Polo

Mini

I love my mini so much. I recently drove a fiat 500 and did love it but it's not as spacious in the back as the mini and it had no oomph at all. Struggled to get to 70 at all! It was the smaller engine though.

Hyundai's are great. Very reliable. We've had 3 and never had a problem with any of them.

Ford focus - great car, cheap on fuel, parts are cheap of anything needs doing to it. Or if you want something slightly smaller then the new ford fiestas are actually a great size with surprisingly big boot too.

I had a light brown 1.2L Fiat 500 and it was a brilliant little car. Swapped it for a 5 door mini hatchback in 2016, still regret it. It was fun to drive, economical, cheap to run and service. Got into the most minute parking spaces. Not the biggest boot in the world but it was sufficient for day to day. When I went on site visits people would sometimes walk me back to my car and say, "I love your car!" when they saw it- never got that with the mini. Hope someone's looking after you, Margot Sad
