Or is this marketing email not funny?

Make her smile, laugh... and wish her pelvic muscles were stronger 😂 🎉 ❤️

As a subject header in a marketing email from Boomf. The edible photo marshmallow company owned by James Middleton.

The email is not flogging funny cards or witty gifts, just marshmallows, that you can presumable have printed with children’s faces for Mother’s Day.

What the hell is funny about having a weak pelvic floor? And what has it got to do with the product? Nothing. Just a gag at the expense of mothers. And this is supposed to make me want to send money their way?

Am I being petty or is this really unfunny and rude?

It's a little Petty but as a marketing gimic it has done its job.

It's made you notice the email, start a thread on a forum mentioning the company giving it exposure.

I did giggle at it and my mum would too.

escapade1234 · 25/03/2019 12:27

Yes, I suppose it has. Guess I’m the sucker then, is that what you’re saying? Such a mean approach to advertising though, in my opinion.

I work in marketing and seen it so many times. The thing is for every person who does find it annoying or offensive there is normally a group who'll buy into it.

doodlejump1980 · 25/03/2019 12:29

Is he talking about his sisters?

SwimmingKaren · 25/03/2019 12:29

Know what you mean op, seen a lot of these joke cards advertised on Facebook ads etc and must say I don’t really appreciate being told I must have a baggy fanny just because I’m a mother either. Just wtf. Grin

EstrellaDamn · 25/03/2019 12:31

It's just shite, isn't it.

"Make him smile, laugh, and wish his dick wasn't as limp as a wet rag."

Hmm nope, can't see that one happening. Must just be the birth injuries of mothers that are hilarious.

escapade1234 · 25/03/2019 12:32

I’m picturing a meeting of young marketers trying to think of a funny line to attract people to their crazy marshmallows before mother’s day. What can we say about mums that’s not been said before? I know, older women piss themselves don’t they? Yeah, that’s funny, pissing themselves ha ha ha. Let’s put that. They’ll get them to buy marshmallows - because we’ve mocked them, and their stupid knackered pelvic floors.

What a career.

The saying in advertising is “if you don’t get it it isn’t aimed at you”

So take from that what you will

AryaStarkWolf · 25/03/2019 12:37

"Make him smile, laugh, and wish his dick wasn't as limp as a wet rag."

This one made me laugh Grin

PerpetualStudent · 25/03/2019 12:41

My understanding is lots of older men have ‘leak’ problems also, but strangly enough this hasn’t become a ‘hilarious’ trope used in cultural references and marketing campaigns. Funny that...

outreach29 · 25/03/2019 13:00

"Make him smile, laugh, and wish his dick wasn't as limp as a wet rag."

hahaha - that one was funny all right.

FriarTuck · 25/03/2019 13:00

"Make him smile, laugh, and wish his dick wasn't as limp as a wet rag."
Now that is funny. And it would make excellent marketing for something.
But as to your example OP, well what do you expect from a company that makes shite marshmallows as a gift? Even the 'make her smile, laugh' bit is nauseating. To be honest the ending actually improves it!
All very bollocks and I can' t see why anyone would bother with them.

FrustratedTeddyLamp · 25/03/2019 13:54

Interesting, pps find boomfs " joke" unfunny, yet find a pps "joke" of the same line funny i would presume as its not at their expense. Funny how that works isnt it

Sparklfairy · 25/03/2019 13:56

I bet every member of the marketing team is a clone of Mel Gibson from what women want

FriarTuck · 25/03/2019 14:20

It would be funny as a sarcastic put-down type of humour, not as a ha-ha witty comment on a marshmallow. Context is everything. If we hadn't read the marshmallow bollocks first we'd probably be going Hmm at the limp one.

MumofTinies · 25/03/2019 14:26

I honestly thought boomf had gone bust! Sounds like they soon will be

bigsista00 · 25/03/2019 15:37

I thought that the main product from Boomf were the cards that make you jump? With either a cardboard butterfly or confetti or whatever?
If I received that marketing email I would have assumed it was in reference to those products?

ForalltheSaints · 25/03/2019 16:11

Unsubscribe and say why.

BeanTownNancy · 25/03/2019 16:27

"Make him smile, laugh, and wish his dick wasn't as limp as a wet rag."

Funnily enough, I remember having a conversation with a man who had ED issues and he compared trying to have sex with a limp dick as "like trying to push a marshmallow through a keyhole" - so maybe there is promise in that marketing angle from this particular company. They could sell marshmallow penises with a hilarious "it might be as soft as daddy's but at least it tastes better." Now that's something which will make all those incontinent women laugh until they pee themselves. Hmm

BeanTownNancy · 25/03/2019 16:29

(^the daddy above being the woman's husband, because of the mother's day angle... Realised that might need clarification not to be incredibly inappropriate 🤦🏻‍♀️)

CatGoals · 25/03/2019 16:31

Didn’t James sell Boomf?

escapade1234 · 25/03/2019 19:33

Yes, I have emailed them about it. I’m sure they won’t care what a middle-aged woman thinks of them. As someone said up thread, if you don’t find it funny, it’s not aimed at you.

I just think it’s unpleasant and mocking.

OP posts:
EstrellaDamn · 26/03/2019 08:20

I've just emailed them too. I'm unreasonably annoyed about this.

I've got a bladder prolapse and hey, I was feeling really shit about it, but now that I know it's funny well, I feel much better about pissing myself, not having sex, being in pain when I go to the loo, having to stop running, being unable to lift weights, putting on weight, being unable to complete a wee, feeling like someone has kicked me in the bladder.

Maybe I'd cheer up if I ate some marshmallows.

KathyS901 · 26/03/2019 09:18

It's just a joke 🙄 I laughed. If you don't like it don't buy their products.

EstrellaDamn · 26/03/2019 09:31

Well that's fine for you @KathyS901 but birth injuries are endemic for woman in this country, sometimes due to the care we receive during labour and not being listened to while we're at our most vulnerable.

So I guess it's not a big 'ha ha' area for everyone.
