to leave the hob on?

If you were in the middle of cooking dinner and got called away unexpectedly, so you would be out of the house for about 10-15 minutes what would you do in this situation?

10 yr old DS is absorbed with the computer in the front room.
Potatoes are cooking on the hob.

Which of the following are OK (if either)?

1. Turn hob off, leave DS on computer.

1. Leave hob on low, leave DS on computer, tell him don't go near hob

(Difference of opinion here!)

I would go for option 1, just to be on the safe side.

First option - wouldn't take the risk of the hob unattended - unless its electric not gas

I'd set the timer on my job as it's induction and will turn itself off if necessary

I have left the hob on low, when I've realised I've run out of something and need to pop to the shop at the end of the road (3 minute walk) but wouldn't leave a child in the house. I'd either leave the hob on and take the child or leave the child (at the age of your DS) and turn the hob off

Sorry I should have said, it's a gas hob.

At 10 years old, could you not set an alarm reminder for DS to turn off the hob when the potatoes are done? I was definitely expected to help out with the cooking at that age. Obviously if he’s never done it before, then this particular situation isn’t the best time to teach him, I guess I’m just surprised it’s an issue!

Turn it off and put the lid on the pan, they’ll continue to cook slowly in the water and you can whack it up again when you get back.
Leave the 10YO as he is.

Hob off. Never leave pans unattended in case they boil over/boil dry.

Depends on the child if they go with you or not.

DS is only five, but thinking of myself at 10, I'd have been fine with option 2, if it were an electric hob. Wouldn't have been a computer game back then, but if I was absorbed in a book I wouldn't have moved or got up to any mischief and wouldn't have touched the cooker without specific instructions, ie turn the hob off when the timer goes.

We have an electric hob and I will turn the hob off and leave the pan on the hob sometimes. Sometimes I'll move it off completely just depends on the reason I'm leaving it.

Hob off. Or get your DS to watch them - I was quite capable with the gas cooker at that age, I had to light the grill with one of those lighter things every time I made toast!

I wouldnt leave the hob on if I was actually leaving the house. And I wouldn't leave a child unattended.

10 year olds know how to cook but should have supervision so I wouldn't leave them alone with it.

No way would I leave a 10yo home alone with the gas hob on.
