Neighbours smoking cannabis

newname12019 · 23/03/2019 12:00

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of the smell of cannabis.
I stay in a flat and my neighbours downstairs smoke cannabis everyday. My flat absolutely stinks of it and opening the window makes the smell worse.
Yesterday I was called into my dds school and they could smell the cannabis of her. I explained it was my neighbours but they have still made a referral to social services.

SS might not care. My step son (7) comes back from his mum's smelling of cannabis and he says his DM smokes it in the bedroom they share at her house. My dh called SS and they didn't do a thing.

Fragglesrooke · 23/03/2019 13:10

Our neighbours are growing the stuff - actually showed us beaming with pride Confused. We've contacted the police and they've done sweet faAngry.

Ithinkmycatisevil · 23/03/2019 13:17

Wow! They must be smoking one hell of a lot of canabis for the smell to be infecting your flat enough for your dd to go to school smelling of it! That's crazy.

Normally I'm pretty live and let live about this sort of thing, but if it's leading to ss being called on you, something has to be done. Don't ask me what though. The police don't really care about recreational use.

PlainSpeakingStraightTalking · 23/03/2019 13:21

Lots of kids smell of cannabis? Really? How times change.

Go have a quick whiff of Y10 and Y11 after break and lunch - they stink of it, having sunk a toke or two behind the bike sheds.

BlackPrism · 23/03/2019 13:35

@Fragglesrooke that's a major fire hazard! I'd be v worried

burritofan · 23/03/2019 13:55

If they can smoke what they like in their flat, you can do what you like in yours. Early morning dance parties above their heads on those three days off. Weren't you going to develop a 4am vacuuming habit? How's your washing machine, have you tried putting it off-balance a bit? Now might be the time to get a very yappy little dog, or for DD to take up the trumpet.

SuziQ10 · 23/03/2019 14:00

Yes. I know how this feels. We own our house, neighbours moved into the terraced house next door, started a lot of DIY and took up the floorboards.. smoke loads of weed... I get stoned in my own house because it comes through the floor / walls / windows. Absolutely hate it. Have written to the council, spoken to neighbours etc... hoping it gets better. It's very frustrating.

peppaaargh · 23/03/2019 14:02

This would be enough to make me move. How disgusting

HJE17 · 23/03/2019 14:10

I agree with the PP who suggested talking to the building manager. This is utterly unacceptable. It must be driving you insane.

longwayoff · 23/03/2019 14:34

I'm not being faux naif I had no idea it is so widespread. I know it stinks though but am surprised it clings to children's clothes although as you said, tobacco smoke does so why not skunk? Not something I've ever noticed.

newname12019 · 23/03/2019 15:12

I would love to move but I don't think anyone would buy it with this smell.
I went into the local police station and spoke to an officer who said unfortunately there isn't much they can do about it unless they are dealing it.
I will phone social services on Monday if they haven't contacted me and will also speak to the council on Monday.
Have bought some incense so will try that and am currently washing all of dds clothes again with loads of softener and will take it up to my mums to dry.

Awadebumbo · 23/03/2019 15:25

Try incense sticks it should help with the smell.

Fragglesrooke · 23/03/2019 15:31

BlackPrism I know! Had to buy fire extinguishers just in case. Crop is in an outbuilding but still. DH wants to take matters into his own hands - I bet the police would be interested then Angry. Smell is horrendous tooSad

Gingerkittykat · 23/03/2019 15:33

NDN regularly has a smoke and it can travel into my house. I have also smelled it from the street with his bedroom window shut, possibly the smell escaping from the air vent.

High strength cannabis stinks and unbelievable amount, far more than the stuff of my youth did.

I don't know if environmental health would be interested.

I doubt if the police would want to know.

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 23/03/2019 15:44

Buy them a vaporiser? It is very unreasonable of them to not listen to their neighbours, god they must be smoking a tonne!

PregnantSea · 23/03/2019 15:46

You can buy air filters but you get what you pay for and the ones that are effective are very pricey.

Please be prepared for the police to not do much about this, as annoying as it is for you. Unless they catch them in the act of smoking it, or get grounds for a warrant (depends on which police force it is but unlikely) and then find drugs on the property, not much can be done. Even if they did find marijuana, a small amount for personal use probably won't result in jail time and so your neighbours will be back home before you know it and stinking up your flat again. Your neighbours could be dealers, in which case the police will obviously do a lot more, but otherwise I wouldn't hold your breath.

Not sure what to suggest, sorry OP Confused

Inliverpool1 · 23/03/2019 15:55

I’d lie, tell the police they are dealing. They can’t get away with it making people’s lives miserable selfish twats

beefthief · 23/03/2019 16:39

Yeah, lie and make their lives miserable. @inliverpool1 grow up.

HelenaDove · 23/03/2019 17:13

@longwayoff the stuff thats smoked now is very pungent and strong. OP i have exactly the same problem with my downstairs neighbour who lives directly underneath me. ive been saying that something like in your OP would happen one day. IMO you need to get your thread title amended so it shows more detail.

We are in HA flats. The problem with on the spot flat inspections for tenants due to drugs though is its then tenants who arent indulging in this stinky habit who get inconvienienced. I had people who work in the housing sector get angry on another thread "contractors for HAs" saying why was i tarring people who work in the housing sector with the same brush and making out that they were all scum. a. i wasnt b. a lot of them (NAHOALT) are very eager to tar all tenants with the same brush though. Yet THEY are the ones allocating the flats in the first place so should take some bloody responsibility . Our ex HO knew that he downstairs was/is a druggie and didnt care.

Inliverpool1 · 23/03/2019 17:48

@beefthief that’s exactly what the “smokers” are doing to the OP. When you’re child is affected by it, it’s time for action

Soontobe60 · 23/03/2019 17:53

If we smell cannabis on a child in school, we inform SS and they ALWAYS visit parents. This is because if a child smells of it, then they are probably around the smokers and affected by passive smoking.

Dramatical · 23/03/2019 18:54

Social services don't remove children who are exposed to passive smoking.

Purpleartichoke · 23/03/2019 18:59

Adding candles and incense on top of the smoke is not going to do your lungs any favors. Bring SS in and explain the situation.

I really don’t think social workers have the time to visit every child who’s been smoked around, unless it was consistently happening and there were other markers of neglect.

1CantPickAName · 23/03/2019 19:17

Do you know where they work?
