Bastarding Argos

Ordered a new washer dryer for delivery today because it's the only day I can be home for the next week. Take the day off as they're delivering between 7am and 6pm. Up and dressed by 630am. Received a text advising me that they'll be delivering in a particular 2 hour time slot this afternoon and I'll get a call about an hour beforehand to give me a more definite time. Lovely. I take out the old machine and wheel it out for collection.

Receive a call from a very cheery sounding delivery man telling me he'll be here within the hour.

Happy days.

Of course I now realise that the reason he sounded cheery is because he was taking the fucking piss. Half an hour later I get a text from Argos telling me that they weren't able to deliver today. No explanation.

Called them to find out why (because apparently the onus is on me to find out) and it seems they didn't bother loading it onto the van. No apology, nothing. The (frankly quite arsey) call centre woman asked - When can we re-deliver? Doesn't re-deliver imply they tried in the first place?

I've cancelled the order since I don't trust that they'll bother pitching up the next time, am now without a washing machine and am fuming at having had to waste my time and money with them when, if I'd wanted to have delivery a different day, I could (and would) have gone elsewhere.

I've now lost a day's pay for nothing and I'm going to have to wait 5 days before they refund my debit card.

Am I being unreasonable for being furious about this? Would it have been that difficult to just give me a call to let me know (especially having called to tell me they'd be here within the hour)?

I'd be fuming too. No customer service at all. Shocking. I hate Argos

Flibbitygibbit · 21/03/2019 16:58

I have just smirked to myself. 3 years ago we ordered a bed from Argos. Took ages to arrive. Then when it did had bits missing. Anyhow dumped said bed at the shop (was ordered online) as had lots of phone calls between us and them and they were incredibly rude to me on the phone 🤷‍♀️They refunded bed money back into the account after a few days.... annnnmyyyyywwwaaayyy 2 days later Argos delivery men rang to ask where to deliver the bed ??? Bed was delivered , no payment made and because I’d kicked up a fuss got £60 in vouchers 😂

Never purchased anything again from them though !

WrongKindOfFace · 21/03/2019 16:58

I can second Euronics stores. They were local, delivered on a day of my choosing for free, and even installed it for free. And it didn’t cost any more than online.

scorpio32 · 21/03/2019 17:01

I've had good service with AO and I'd recommend them to others based on my experience.

I'm currently in dispute with Argos (won't say why) and I've found that they do react to negative reviews online - mine was on TrustPilot (and then on their Facebook page) and they got in touch immediately.

Princessmushroom · 21/03/2019 17:03

Doesn’t Martin Lewis have a guide on claiming money if you’ve lost out from a company not attending when they said they would?

viccat · 21/03/2019 17:04

John Lewis isn't much better - my fridge-freezer came from there and they nearly refused to bring it into my kitchen (I had paid for the old one to be taken away and "installation") because I have wooden floors!! The drivers made me sign this waiver to say I accepted responsibility for any damage to my property or the fridge-freezer if they brought it in. It was absolutely nuts! They even called their base and nearly drove away with my fridge. Shock

Pharlapwasthebest · 21/03/2019 17:05

Curry's are shit, they trashed my hall (new build) and the delivery guys were weird. I was happy I had my dog with me, they actually asked if he would protect me (in a very creepy way).
AO are really good.

Pharlapwasthebest · 21/03/2019 17:05

Plus curry's don't give you a decent time period, whereas ao give you a 2 hour slot and then narrow it down as they get closer.

ColeHawlins · 21/03/2019 17:06

It's a shame about JL. They used to be really good.

HarrysOwl · 21/03/2019 17:07

I had a similar experience (with a shower) from Argos that they failed to deliver.

I phoned the customer services, explained that I had booked time off work and booked a plumber (both true) and they sent me a £100 voucher.

It helped ease the anger!

Popcornandbuttons · 21/03/2019 17:08

That’s so rubbish, I’d be slagging Argos off all over their Twitter page...and start penning the complaint letter

amatsip · 21/03/2019 17:09

Co-op electrical are very good they also have an ebay clearance page where they have some great bargains

www.ebaystores.co.uk/Co-operativeElectrical

as well as their normal website electrical.coop.co.uk/

Sadly it says closing end of month s bargains to be had it seems.

Craftypuss · 21/03/2019 17:14

Might be worth trying Co-op Electrical? I've had nothing but good service from them.

WeCameToDance · 21/03/2019 17:26

Everyone is probably going to post with an awful experience of them now but I have ordered a lot of white goods with Curry's and they have always been good.
Two cheerful chaps plummed in my washing machine and they were really careful bringing it in over my new flooring.
It didn't take them very long either. My address is quite hard to find as well and they have always persevered even when it has meant phoning me several times in an area with poor reception.
I do like Argos but they were crap when I tried to order an oven. Tried to charge me delivery when online it was free. When I pointed this out suggested I could pay, then wait until one was available, at which point they would phone me and arrange delivery. Ummmm, no thanks.

PostcodeJack · 21/03/2019 17:26

Thanks for all the tips! Complaints are being made!

DontCallMeShitley · 21/03/2019 17:52

I wouldn't use John Lewis again either. They take an order that is showing as in stock, take the payment, then give a delivery date for 6 weeks. When you cancel they take weeks to refund it and send you warranty details every year even though you don't have the item.

If you ever do get an item from them it is 99% likely to be dented or not working and they try to to collect and replace or admit liability until you threaten action. Stopped using them a while ago after far too many problems.

mumknowsbestapparently · 21/03/2019 18:00

Try next, they sell electricals and have always seemed pretty reasonable prices, I think it’s delivered by AO as well, we got our last drier from there and had no problems with delivery etc.

wizzler · 21/03/2019 18:02

Try a local supplier. Ours is brilliant and go out of there way to be helpful

Sparklesocks · 21/03/2019 18:13

I once ordered a full length mirror from Argos, had the day off like you OP and it did eventually come- but when I opened the box it was completely smashed! Ok fine, not good but I appreciate sometimes these things happen.

When I called them the woman was very apologetic and said the driver would be back at the end of his round to collect the broken one and they’d send out a new one at the weekend. Fine ok. Driver came and took it away that evening

Next day..I come home from work and lying in my front garden is..a big box. It’s all soggy from the rain and the cardboard is all dog eared. Weird! I turn it over and it’s addressed to me, I open it and there is..the broken mirror from yesterday!!

After much confusion I eventually put it together..turns out the driver, clearly at the end of his rounds and very much checked out, had just dumped the box down my street. Someone had found it, read the address, assumed it hadn’t been delivered properly so put it in my front garden!!

Nightmare. I cancelled the replacement mirror in the end as I just couldn’t face the hassle of it all..

Akire · 21/03/2019 18:20

I tried order a washing machine from them, was something silly like we will deliver after 28days but coulnt give a firm date even then. Went on John Lewis same machine same price. Delivered in time slot 2 days later. Nobody plans a new washing machine it’s not like new sofa!

Fluffyears · 21/03/2019 18:20

AO were awful when we moved into our house. They refused to fit washing machine as they didn’t have a pipe long enough and said we wouldn’t be able to get it fitted (strange how the independent guy did it no bother Hmm).

They didn’t fit the dishwasher as they needed some sort of fitment that they didn’t have with them.

managed to fit the fridge freezer which kept bleeping and then looked up instructions and told us the bleeping was it ‘settling’. After several episodes of the fridge bleeping away we called the warranty line and an engineer came out...they had chucked away a door sensor component with the packaging. The fridge thought the door was open all the time! He fitted the component and it’s been fine since.

They also used my brand new loo (which is fine) and pissed all over the seat and new flooring and didn’t flush!

PostcodeJack · 21/03/2019 18:27

Sadly we don't have any local suppliers for white (or in this case black) goods otherwise I would have tried them first.

I do understand that these things happen, it was just the "meh" attitude that hacked me off. If the driver had phoned to let me know or the call centre lady had not sounded like she didn't give a shit (and I was v polite) then I wouldn't have been so bothered.

Dutchesss · 21/03/2019 18:31

Argos did this to me. I waited in a whole day until I realised it just wasn't coming. I had to argue to be refunded the delivery fee. Never again have I used Argos for any appliances.

anniehm · 21/03/2019 18:32

Find a local independent shop - ours price matches and delivers when convenient for you including 6pm on Christmas Eve when my dishwasher broke (ok in that instance I had to have the display model obviously!) will never shop elsewhere

Bobbycat121 · 21/03/2019 18:33

Really. I had good experience with argos recently. Ordered a washing machine, developed a fault within a month, called them and asked to swap for a new one which they allowed me to do at no extra cost even though it was
more money, delivered for free within 2 days.
