Vaccine related aibu?

A woman has 2 DC. 1 boy of 2. And a baby of about 5 months. Boy doy have vaccines. Never has. Baby hasnt either. Mum doesn't BELIEVE in them.

Shes lied to nursery and has said ds is vaccinated.

It might not be compulsory but she lied, and potentially put other kids at risk. The nursery may have their own policy.

Many vaccines only offer immunity for a certain period of time and many older people never had them in the first place. There will be plenty of people in the community who are not fully protected.

Definitely inform the school. I personally would inform the nursery too so they can re evaluate their procedures - DCs nursery wanted to see his red book.
I don't believe that it's her right to choose, it's fecking stupid not to vaccinate children against illnesses that can kill them.

It is her right to choose and they are many reasons why which are no one elses business. Its when people start calling people stupid for not vaccinating which make them lie about it.

Although she has the right to not vaccinate her children, she doesn't have the right to lie to the nursery about it. There may be a child with compromised immunity whose parents only want to put them in nursery with vaccinated kids and would keep them home if there were unvaccinated children there.

She is taking away another parent's ability to protect their child by lying.

Plus, she is denying one of her child's main carers accurate medical information. If her child started showing severe symptoms, knowing he is unvaccinated means the nursery can tell the hospital in case it is something they would not automatically look for because there would be an expectation that the child was vaccinated.

Not getting your child vaccinated is a bad idea.

Absolutely tell the nursery. She's fine to put her own kids health at risk by not vaccinating, but not that of other children. It's wrong to lie about something so serious.

I also think you should let the nursery know. They have a duty of care to all the other children, and she shouldn't have lied.

Assuming you are in UK, I don't think there's any point in telling the school.

After all, what can they do with the information?

(PS: the older generation being unvaccinated is a bit of a red herring. I am not vaccinated against eg measles, as the jab did not exist back when I got the disease and acquired life-long immunity the hard way round. That's why the NHS catch-up programme which provides MMR on request to anyone not sure of their status, is only for those born after 1970 - older people had the wild diseases)

Wel they do agent I think. Every time my dc have started a new nursery or school I've had to fill in a form, including vaccinations. I've never been asked to provide proof.

I've had forms to fill in too, when starting schools or nurseries.

But I'm not quite sure what a school would do with the information. They cannot tell third parties about it, and a medic treating a DC wouid not rely on school's account of what the parent wrote at time of entry. They'd be asking the parents, who would be meeting DC asap either at school to take to doctors or at A&E if sudden collapse.

Schools also cannot tell 3rd parties (eg other parents) so there's no benefit to any immunocompromised pupils (in the school holding info, that it, obviously those who cannot be immunised benefit enormously from a vaccinated herd, and those who opt out for no good reason harm them by weakening a protection)

The stupidity (and selfishness) of others never fails to astound me. Thankfully my kids could be vaccinated and don't rely on herd immunity. It must be terrifying if your kids do.

Schools / Nurseries cannot say, "Little Johnny hasn't been vaccinated", what they can do is have policies around keeping an immunosuppressed child safe and, I think, they can also state things like, "90% of children in this nursery are vaccinated", or even have a policy of not allowing unvaccinated (other than for medical reasons) children into the nursery, or not into the baby room.

Schools can do things like reduce risk by putting an immunocompromised child in a different class from a non-vaccinated healthy child, or be able to answer accurately in a local measles epidemic whether there are any unvaccinated children in the class/school, so that the parents of immunocompromised children can make at informed choice about whether to send their kids to school during the outbreak.

The parent’s choice not to vaccinate puts other children at risk. Her choice to lie removes the ability of other parents to manage the risk related to that choice. It’s doubly selfish.
