AIBU to correct the way people speak?

Not a grammar Nazi but I host lots of volunteers and I have grown to hate, hate, hate the word 'like'. (Most are 18-25, female and British/European/American).

"I was, like, going to, like, my friend's and she was, like, late so, like, I was really, like, cross with her." Arrrrgggghhhhh!!!

I've started, like, really calling them out, like, on using the L word or am I going to stunt their emotional growth, like?!?

I think people labour under the misconception that correcting other people's grammar, spelling and foibles of speech somehow makes them sound of superior intelligence. It doesn't. It makes them look what they are: patronizing, arrogant, ignorant and downright rude.

I’d rather be someone who uses an extremely common, innocuous but slightly irritating expression in casual conversation than be a rude grumpy person who thinks they’re better than other people because of the way they speak.

I hope they start calling you out on your rudeness to aid your emotional growth

If you’re training these volunteers in, I don’t know, delivering business pitches or presenting to a group then I could see how a lesson in speaking professionally might be warranted. Otherwise bore off, it’s utterly classless to insinuate that the way someone speaks is inferior to how you speak. And be careful, some American might report you to HR for, like, mocking their accent if you’re not careful.

I'm not training volunteers - they're here to help with the farm in exchange for food, accommodation and life experience. 130 over the last 8 years, most come back at least once. Ho hum.

I’m from the North East and this use of ‘like’ has been around for years here - common enough when I was a child in the 70s. If you tried to correct the way I speak I wouldn’t be impressed, me, like.

YABU. These speech trends/habits come and go. You probably use turns of phrase that irritate others too. They are just too polite to point them out.
