...to ask how much you drink in a week?

Firstly, I don't have some kind of problem (or at least I didn't think I did), I just enjoy a glass to relax some evenings!

How much does the average mother or father of 2 (17 and 10) drink during the week? I'd say, I drink 3 to 4 glasses of wine during the week. I didn't think this was/would be considered a problem as such.

But, recently, a lot of people (family) have been commenting on this as if they are about to stage some kind of fucking intervention or something!

Is 3 to 4 glasses a week considered a "problem" now?

Errr - I hope not!
In a normal week I would generally share a bottle of wine with my DH on Friday & Saturday night (half each). We generally don't have anything much Mon- Thurs unless one of us is going out.

QueenAnneBoleyn · 25/02/2019 14:27

I think you’re reasonable. Doesn’t sound like a lot to me. 🤷‍♀️

HeathRobinson · 25/02/2019 14:27

Nothing, most of the time. I drink at Christmas and on my birthday.

SaucyJack · 25/02/2019 14:29

It’s not too much alcohol.

Maybe you bang on about “wine o’clock” more than you realise?

I’d struggle to see otherwise why so many people are commenting on you having a glass of wine every other day at home.

dementedpixie · 25/02/2019 14:29

Nothing Sunday to Thursday for either of us. Bottle of wine for me on a Friday, 2 double vodka drinks on a Saturday. Dh has 2 or 3 beers on a Friday and 2 G&T's on a Saturday.

icelollycraving · 25/02/2019 14:29

I just googled how many units in a bottle of wine, 10 😳
I drink too much.

Merryoldgoat · 25/02/2019 14:30

Jesus no, that’s nothing!

Swings between weeks - prob average 3 units a week but some none, some much more.

thecatsthecats · 25/02/2019 14:30

3-4 glasses is fine, and even better if that's on 3 days not 4.

I do tend to drink just on Friday or Saturday nights now, but that's because I'm on a diet.

Mumsnet can go to ridiculous extremes on this one though. One woman got an absolute hounding because she was worried about her husband's drinking - 10 bottles of expensive wine a week! The question she asked was actually if it should come from personal spends not groceries, but she got MN in viper mode about her 'penny pinching' his expensive alcoholism!

Then you'll get a thread where no one apparently drinks more than a thimble of sherry at Christmas.

Let's see what mood everyone's in today!

PBo83 · 25/02/2019 14:32

Assuming they're fairly large glasses that's still only a bottle or so a week (in my language that's about half a pint of beer a day). Definitely not a problem.

In answer to your original question, I'm a stepfather of one and drink 2-3 pints a night (which I know is above average but what's the point in giving a dishonest answer to someone's question?)

MummyStruggles · 25/02/2019 14:37

SaucyJack - I think maybe I'm just the "black sheep" of the family who just likes to enjoy herself now and again, not something many of my family members do.

I mean, since getting together with my now husband 6 years ago and being very happy, my own mother does ask regularly "Why do you want to be out with Chris all the time, why do you want to spend so much time together?"

Haha!

By during the week do you mean Monday to Friday i.e not including weekend drinking? If not and it's literally just those glasses during the entire week then that sounds perfectly reasonable. Although I would say that as it's similar to me Grin

Can I just say I bloody love the taste of an ice cold g & t or a belly warming glass of full bodied red.

Sigh.

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 25/02/2019 14:39

Let's see what mood everyone's in today!

Haha yes I thought the same thing! I never dare share how much I drink because as you say, a thimble of sherry at Xmas is about what’s acceptable on MN and anything else you’ll get told you’re an alcoholic.
OP take no notice of your judgemental family - you are well within the recommended alcohol units per week me, on the other hand......

SabineUndine · 25/02/2019 14:41

How big are the glasses? I mean, I can get a bottle of wine into wine glasses if I try.

That said, I once went to a family silver wedding party and delighted the uncle who was hosting by saying 'I'll have a gin and tonic please' because everyone else in the room had gone for lemonade or orange juice. The looks I got from Disapproving Aunts were deadly. Maybe your family is just like that?

BitchQueen90 · 25/02/2019 14:44

I don't really drink unless I'm having a night out. Not for any moral reasons but alcohol is expensive and I don't have a lot of spare cash.

TildaTurnip · 25/02/2019 14:44

I don’t drink so sometimes I think I see what people drink as more than others would. However, 3-4 glasses a week doesn’t seem a lot!

HeathRobinson · 25/02/2019 14:45

Well, it could be worse, op, you could be a gamer. That always seems to attract opprobium on MN!

MummyStruggles · 25/02/2019 14:45

I do take care not to pour myself anything over half of the glass and they aren't huge glasses, just standard wine glasses.

I mean 3 to 4 glasses within 7 days.

My family are very judgemental and opinionated and, like I say, don't often venture out or enjoy themselves very much.

OP posts:
Quintella · 25/02/2019 14:48

If your drinking is as you say it is then there's clearly no problem. Tell them to back off.

BadLad · 25/02/2019 14:48

opprobium

Awesome word

SwinglowFed · 25/02/2019 14:58

About 28-35 units a week so more than I should clearly! I have 2/3 nights off it and on the other nights tend to drink about 6/7 units.

Mammyloveswine · 25/02/2019 14:58

Ive been drinking far too much and am cutting right down. It's become a habit once the kids are in bed to pour a large glass of wine then another. And that's midweek.

So now I'm only drinking Friday and Saturday nights, and I'm sticking to gin as I'll only have 2 with slimline tonic in a massive bubble glass.

I'll have wine if out with a meal but not in the house generally. And if I do buy wine I've started to buy the "half bottles" so I'm not tempted to top up with the last glass.

I'm not reliant on alcohol but I recognise that I've had too much lately and can see how people spiral into alcohol dependency.

Jizzle · 25/02/2019 15:00

Frankly, whilst it might not be a popular opinion, I think if you have a drink every evening it's a problem, regardless of how much you drink.

It certainly doesn't make you an alcoholic, far from it, but if you need it every night, just to 'unwind' I think you have a dependency and are probably over-relying on it. Of course, people have stressful jobs, but if drinking is your only outlet then personally, i think you have an issue.

cocomelon23 · 25/02/2019 15:03

It's a lot to me. I have one glass of wine about once a month.

MummyStruggles · 25/02/2019 15:06

Jizzle - I don't have a glass "every evening" because that would be 7 glasses wouldn't it? I am by no means dependable on it, I just like the taste so enjoy a few glasses a week.

OP posts:
GottenGottenGotten · 25/02/2019 15:06

Usually 0, occasional weeks 2 or 3. I'm not a big drinker though, and live alone. There clearly isn't anything unreasonable about 3 or 4 glasses of wine per week though.
