...to ask how much you drink in a week?

Firstly, I don't have some kind of problem (or at least I didn't think I did), I just enjoy a glass to relax some evenings!

How much does the average mother or father of 2 (17 and 10) drink during the week? I'd say, I drink 3 to 4 glasses of wine during the week. I didn't think this was/would be considered a problem as such.

But, recently, a lot of people (family) have been commenting on this as if they are about to stage some kind of fucking intervention or something!

Is 3 to 4 glasses a week considered a "problem" now?

I don't massively disagree, and the advice is for alcohol free days (and at 6/7, I'm certainly fine on that score), however... I do need to read to wind down in bed each night. To the point where even if I'm legless drunk, I'll read my kindle for 20m. Can't sleep otherwise.

That is a similar habitual dependency - so if someone does similar with a small glass I unhoik my judgey pants.

(I did crack my own habit of a crisp cider on a hot day by swapping for ginger beer, and I find the fizzy crispness takes the edge off if I do crave alcohol)

Nothing, unless I go out and then I'm usually driving, so I have one glass of wine.

I don't think that's a lot, but maybe it seems a lot to them, as maybe you didn't drink that much before?

I pretty much never drink now, so if I suddenly started drinking 3-4 glasses a week, I think my family would get concerned as it is out of character for me.

I drink pretty much the same as you, OP, and at the same times of the week. So of course I think it's fine. It's more or less a bottle a week using my wine glasses. It doesn't seem excessive and I've certainly drunk more at different times of my life.

I only drink on Friday and Saturday evening and a bottle in total.

I don’t handle drink well so anything more than about half a glass of wine is too much. My dad was similar, and regularly had a glass or two of home brew to unwind in the evenings.
The amount on paper seemed reasonable, but the reality of living with it was not. I barely drink as a result.

It may not be the case, but is it possible that your family are trying to tell you something?

I don't drink during the week but can polish a whole bottle of wine off on a Friday night.Now I need wine!

DH is tee total as he doesn't like the taste of alcohol. I drink 1 or 2 glasses of wine per week.

No it's not a problem it is well within the weekly recommendations for a woman which is 14 units. I only drink on fri and sat evenings when I share a bottle of wine with my dh which is i guess a bottle of wine each a week.

I drink too much and I know I do. Nothing Mon to Thurs, then a bottle of wine on Friday, Saturday and usually Sunday if I'm honest.

I miss wine.

I probably have a bottle of prosecco, a bottle of wine and 3-4 large gins a week.

DH works shifts so this could be over Fri & Sat or Tues & Thurs depending when he's off.

And now I'm eyeing up the cold bottle of prosecco in the fridge... 🍾

I drink way more than that As PP have said, on MN anything over one glass on a special occasion is seen as alcoholic behaviour but everyone I know IRL drinks more than that so I never know what is actually 'a lot' TBH.

Agree irl most people I know would be classed as raving alcoholics, in fact I walk my dog and see the recycling, I think my village must have a problem.

I quit drinking a couple of years ago when I started a diet. Three to four a week doesn’t doesn't seem excessive.

I usually have between 0 and 1 unit a week, sadly nearer 0 than 1. But only because of lack of opportunity

Though on a weekend I might have a glass of dissoronno and coke about twice a month.
