Aibu or was man rude?

I went to put some fuel in yesterday and when I went to pay the man said "could you not have counted that at the car". Then when I passed him the money and said I think that's right. He said it should be you counted it 4 times.

Fully how we have to apologise when we hand over money, self-depreciating doubt over whether we've counted correctly! Both of you have to count it, that's a given! He's just being a cross patch and taking it out on his customers.

The test to an OP of posting in AIBU is not 'is this interesting to Tucobenedicto' - it is 'I am not sure whether I am being unreasonable to think that '

Ignore people like Tucobenedicto. They're the sort of people who try to tell you off for being apologetic when you hand over cash!

Unfortunately AIBU does attract some rather unreasonable people, as well as those who are quite happy to help and aren't baying for blood.

As you haven't given his side, Could his side have been:
Shop really busy, big queue of people, I'm rushing about trying to get everyone served, lady gets to till, and then starts counting out her pennies?

Yes it was brusque but perhaps there was a queue of people building up behind you getting irritated, who might then take it out on the cashier. Or perhaps he'd just had verbal abuse from a customer, or been called into work on his day off. Perhaps he was trying to be lighthearted and missed the mark. Whatever, it really is of no consequence.

Did you really count it four times? Was it in 50p pieces?

Were you paying in notes or coins? £40 worth of fuel in notes is fine but in coins not so much...

he should have kept his impatience to himself even if there was a queue and you were annoyingly counting change.
