Celebs in fewer clothes over time

I have been watching 'back in time for school 'and taken an interest in the changes through time and even became nostalgic of 80s and 90s school time.

However also looking at a magazine cover from my childhood I was drawn to the fact that Kylie is fully clothed and actually wears fewer clothes now later in life. Little mix at the brits also wearing little clothes.

Do you think celebs wearing as many clothes as Kylie's outfit would sell a magazine today?

I know times change for good and bad but in this case not for the better or am I wrong?

Does this strange undressing phenomenon apply to many male celebrities or is it primarily a female thing?

greenjumper3 · 23/02/2019 21:02

Both but I guess Kylie now and then was in my forethought. Jason well he isn't as famous now but I loved him at the time.

Let’s face it we never bought Smash Hits for what they wore

Often or not the Smash Hits in the mid 90s was filled with topless pics of male solo artists, Peter Andre in particular Confused I was more in it for the Spice Girls 😂

Times have changed, women are more empowered to wear what they like. As a performer myself I love some of Little Mix’s outfits to be honest! It’s just fun!

Needless to say if Little Mix popped on some jumpers for a cover shoot I doubt it would change how many issues would be sold

At that time Kylie was still being that wholesome girl from Neighbours. Fast forward a few months and was a much minxier barrel of fish.

I was watching an old YouTube video - Colourfield "Thinking of You" and Terry Hall had make up on but wasn't trans Grin and the woman singing (can't remember her name) was fully clothed. It made me realise how much things have changed.

showerpower · 23/02/2019 21:09

Kylie changed quite a bit when she took up with Michael Hutchence

Quintella · 23/02/2019 21:10

ah yes, Michael Hutchence, that's when the big change took place. I remember when Shocked was released and everyone (Smash Hits) was 'ooooh, hasn't Kylie gone all pervy'.

showerpower · 23/02/2019 21:10

Look at the New Romantics Hollowtalk - all make up and frilly pirate shirts. Adam Ant as Prince Charming - yum !!

SexNotJenga · 23/02/2019 21:14

I saw the video for Tiffany's 'I think we're alone now' for the first time a few months ago (obvs I'd heard the song before). Couldn't believe how normal she looked. I mean, beautiful, yes, but in a normal way. She was wearing a high neck black jumper and jeans in the video. She looked like a real person. Modern pop stars/celebrities all look like aliens in comparison. Maybe it's the contouring and highlighter, I dunno....

AlecTrevelyan006 · 23/02/2019 21:35

obviously, I am of a certain age, but I think women celebs looked so much better back in the day

MaybeDoctor · 23/02/2019 22:29

The era of grunge fashion was on its way!

Baggy, oversized clothing. Lots of tartan and stonewashed denim, again baggy. Waistcoats. Everything was bigger, looser, more layered.

DaveCoachesgavemetheclap · 23/02/2019 22:33

Women are empowered to wear what they like

Is there anyone stupid enough to actually believe that Little Mix dress the way they do because they are empowered? Hmm

Genevieva · 23/02/2019 22:35

Have you come across Christine and the Queens? French and doesn't give into the Hollywood almost naked, plastic fantastic aesthetic.

OwlinaTree · 23/02/2019 22:38

I loved smash hits! I think I had that edition.

I always notice how pale everyone looks in pop vids from the 90s, pre fake tan era.

Boyskeepswinging · 23/02/2019 22:41

Why does the woman have no top on under her jacket but the man does?

Sorry, didn't think it worked first time ... But why the difference in amount of clothing?!

IndianaMoleWoman · 23/02/2019 22:44

I agree. I was at school in the 90s and I know the show tried to dress the teenagers as if they were from the 90s but I found the hair/make-up to be far too perfect to be a realistic reflection of our 90s looks. We looked absurd, but the only evidence is a few grainy old photos tucked away in drawers somewhere. Today’s teens/pop stars feel a pressure we’ll never know; everything they do/wear is relentlessly documented and preserved forever on the internet, so their whole lives revolve around looking immaculate, therefore they feel that they cannot take risks and have to look sexy all the time.

showerpower · 23/02/2019 22:46

I was an 80's kid, we had perms, masses of hairspray and blue mascara. The girls on the show had a bit of crimping but nothing like the gravity defying hairdos we all sported.

Catquest1 · 23/02/2019 22:48

I definitely had a poster of Axl rose on my wall in the 90s and im fairly sure he was just in his boxers (as he was most of the time in the 90s to be fair). It was black and white and he was sat on a box.

Catquest1 · 23/02/2019 22:49

Not sure thats added to the thread but its brought back happy memories for me Grin

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 23/02/2019 22:52

I loved Kylie in that era! In fact everything about that time.
I would have loved to have been ruined by Michael Hutchence Grin

Fatted · 23/02/2019 22:52

I'm sure I bought that issue of smash hits!

I do feel sad about Little mix in particular. I remember when they started out on x factor they made a big thing about not being like every other girl band, they didn't wear sexy outfits etc. And now look at them, no bloody different to anyone else.

I do think there's a lot of people going the opposite way though. Who don't release videos for songs now etc and still do really well. I really like what Sia does. No idea what she really looks like, but I love her music!
