Just wondering if you've ever found a thread and realised you know them in real life?

I'm always paranoid people will know it's me, just wondered how unreasonable that is - i.e. does it ever actually happen?

OP posts:
Catinthetwat · 17/02/2019 22:41

Yes, it happened to me recently - my name's Helen 😉 (hosting thread 😂)

I wonder this too op...

DippyAvocado · 17/02/2019 22:44

I have worked out one person but not someone I'm close enough to to mention it. I try to avoid her posts as it feels like a bit of an intrusion.

GoGoGadgetGin · 17/02/2019 22:46

cat host your own BBQ you messy mare!! Grin

Dreamzcancometrue · 17/02/2019 22:47

No way.

StopMakingAFoolOutofMe · 17/02/2019 22:48

Yes, but I haven't told them.

QuarterMileAtATime · 17/02/2019 22:48

Yes.

LordVoldetort · 17/02/2019 22:49

Yes, it happened to me recently - my name's Helen 😉 (hosting thread 😂)

Is that thread still going?

PopcornPopPop · 17/02/2019 22:50

Yes but I didn’t tell them. They’d already name changed by the time I realised so it didn’t seem helpful to tell them.

Matilda15 · 17/02/2019 22:50

Yep one, literally last week because she had word for word posted the exact same thing in a Mums group I’m in with her on FB.

Namechangedagain2 · 17/02/2019 22:51

Yes! I recognised someone on here, an active poster, would never mention in real life though

StopMakingAFoolOutofMe · 17/02/2019 22:53

Catinthetwat Of course you are 🙄

MysweetAudrina · 17/02/2019 23:06

Yeah, sometimes I AS her just to keep up with the gossip.

MrsDeanWinchester75 · 17/02/2019 23:10

I had the same username for 5 years then had a pm asking if it was me, I then swapped names which did annoy me a bit as I liked my original one.

I never post anything controversial but I like the anonymity.
I'm now much more vague.

DeaflySilence · 17/02/2019 23:13

Yes. (Have also read this question a couple of times over the years).

TrixieFranklin · 17/02/2019 23:15

Yes

CheddarAndCrackers · 17/02/2019 23:16

Yes. I was reading an old thread and this poster had exactly the same POV as me.
I then realised it actually was me under an old user name... Grin

Made me smile. spit my tea, wake the baby, scare the ddog

oneyearnobeer · 17/02/2019 23:16

Yes. PM'd them and told them in case they wanted to change name but they said no worries.

ReaganSomerset · 17/02/2019 23:19

Oooh, interesting. This is why I name change so much. Due another one in a month or so.

AlpacaLypse · 17/02/2019 23:21

I've recognised someone, or rather worked out she lived in the same very small town, and like oneyearnobeer I pm-ed just to let them know and give her the chance to change her name. She wasn't that bothered. I'm glad - her nn is one of the best on the site!

TC07 · 17/02/2019 23:22

@oneyearnobeer out if interest why did you PM her?

I don't think anyone I know comes on MN and if they did they don't strike me as the sort of person who post.

SadOtter · 17/02/2019 23:25

I have, but only realised it as it was my sister, I'd come on to ask views on the same family thing she posted about and she'd worded it almost exactly how I would have (we are very, very similar people). I texted to let her know I'd seen it but she said she'd name changed for that thread anyway so it didn't matter.

TomHardysCardy · 17/02/2019 23:26

I did know a few from MN that I talked to on fb, I have name changed quite a few times, I would hate anyone IRL to know its me, I like being hidden. A few RL friends have asked me my name I found that odd nosy fuckers

Daffodillie · 17/02/2019 23:29

Yes, because she had asked me the same question at work the day before. It wasn't anything particularly exciting, though - and she didn't get any different information than I had given her already!!!!

PinkBuffalo · 17/02/2019 23:30

I don't think I would really know if it someone I knew in real life.
However, I often click on thread titles about irritating colleagues to check that it isn't about me! Hasn't been so far (phew!)

dartitus · 17/02/2019 23:31

Yes - my old boss posted a story about something that happened to her (word for word, kids were the same age at the time etc), she’s my old boss though so I wouldn’t say anything but it’s funny to see her posting on the days I know she’s in the office lol
