Just wondering if you've ever found a thread and realised you know them in real life?

I'm always paranoid people will know it's me, just wondered how unreasonable that is - i.e. does it ever actually happen?

No, but I post on here as its away from the rural community where I live and i also like the anonymity. I also found with facebook that people are judging threads/posts on who is writing them, rather than the content and it can be quite rude and hostile when the writer just wants to assist.

I’m sure a couple of people I know have clocked me a few times here. I name change if I’m posting anything embarrassing or not already known by those close to me.

I think I have recognised someone. It is not exactly someone I know personally. It is more that they are local to my area and there was a high profile media coverage of a horrific event involving their family.

I also see a thread or post and I think it could be a person I know but then I am put off by information such as age and sex of children. Then I remember that some people change these details for anonymity.

I posted about someone I know and someone wrote on the thread that they knew who i was talking about.

I changed details and wasn't very identifying so I suspect they were lying as people like to on here.

I recognised someone once from a post, but only because she was posting about a very unusual situation she was in that she had told me about. I then recognised another post from her years later under a different name, also because of the unusual situation. It was odd because people were accusing her of making it up and I knew 100% that she wasn't. Always makes me think twice about the threads everyone says are trolly /
DM fodder / etc.

Yes - awful posts after a break up including an illness she developed - really heart wrenching and certainly her as I looked up other posts and there were the names of her kids, dates of pregnancy etc. Have never said anything.

Noteventhebestdrummer · 19/02/2019 18:27

Yes, she's an unusual personality and a complete fantasist, I think MN is helpful for her to explore ideas out loud but it's a shame when people try to help her in good faith

A friend recognised a post I put on (a response to an OP) because it contained a story I’d told her a few days before. She told me she knew my nn and gave me hers but I’ve already forgotten hers! It is weird knowing someone ‘knows’ you and did initially make me worry about what I’d posted in the past in case it made me look like a twat if she looked back through my old posts!

My cousin has shared a couple of threads on FB so I’m pretty sure she’s on here but never worked out who she is!
