Can you accidentally what’s app someone?

Not wanting to go into details but I’m not techie when it comes to social media so after some techie advice. When I use my what’s app all my contacts old and new appear. My husband (no I wasn’t snooping) has a deleted what’s app msg and claims he doesn’t know the person... the picture shows a woman with kids. Could she have accidentally messaged him? Is this possible? Thanks ladies and sorry if this appears a silly question.

She have to have his mobile number to contact him on whatsapp.

ErictheGuineaPig · 10/02/2019 13:28

Possibly. If they are in a what's app group together then they might not necessarily have exchanged phone numbers or anything. I accidentally what's app video called a mum in a whats app group once. Which was embarrassing.

JacquesHammer · 10/02/2019 13:29

She needs to have a mobile number to contact someone.

Obviously it’s possible she made an error whilst inputting the number into her contacts. You can’t just type a number into WhatsApp to send a message.

sofato5miles · 10/02/2019 13:29

I received a family photo from an unknown number. Some middle-aged walkers. I assume they had saved a number incorrectly

wingingitwithkids · 10/02/2019 13:29

Thanks ladies. He isn’t in any what’s app groups x

I’ve had WhatsApp messages from people who’ve got a wrong number. It’s entirely possible that this is what’s happened here.

wingingitwithkids · 10/02/2019 13:30

Thanks that’s what I wondered. So it could be a genuine mistake then.

It's like any text message - you could get one digit wrong and contact the wrong person. However, most people have profile pics, so when you put in a new contact with a new phone number, you might take a look at at the profile pic, think 'I don't know this person' and recheck the number...

MyDearSweetSummerChild · 10/02/2019 13:30

She could have entered the wrong mobile number and messaged by accident. If it’s just an empty conversation (ie you click on it and there’s no messages at all) that means messages were deleted but the conversation wasn’t
Does it show as a number at the top or a name?
If it’s a number they aren’t in his contacts.

nevernotstruggling · 10/02/2019 13:30

I had some line of religious greeting from a friendly looking Asian family the other day I've never met in my life! On WhatsApp

wingingitwithkids · 10/02/2019 13:31

Sofa5tomiles that’s funny! Typo obv! X

It seems there might be bigger issues here than a deleted wrong number WhatsApp message. What has led you to wonder if he’s lying about knowing the woman?

Travisandthemonkey · 10/02/2019 13:32

does it just show a number or a name. If there is a name then she is in his contacts. Which doesn’t mean she didn’t contact him by accident. It can happen.

wingingitwithkids · 10/02/2019 13:32

Its says ‘this message was deleted’

OP posts:
Travisandthemonkey · 10/02/2019 13:33

And the message will be in archive. Unless he’s deleted that too.
But as others have said. This seems more than just a message. I wouldn’t think twice about it unless I had some other issues

BaronessBomburst · 10/02/2019 13:33

You can accidentally message someone else if you're both in a WhatsApp group together. I've had messages meant for other people that way.

InMyBloodstainedSundaysBest · 10/02/2019 13:34

Entirely possible. I've messaged someone accidentally.. messaged someone's old number which had been passed on to a different person. New person blocked me (obviously because they had no idea who I was) so I Facebooked the person I thought I'd messaged, who thought I was going bonkers.. nope.. just had the wrong number!

Presumably the same could happen if you mistype a new contacts number.

The bit I'm confused about is how you know he had a deleted message?

wingingitwithkids · 10/02/2019 13:35

Travisandthemonkey yes no name comes up with number but then says name on picture if that makes sense. X

She could have deleted it. That’s what shows up on my phone when my daughter accidentally sends me something that was intended for one of her friends.
If she’d realised she’d got a wrong number it would make sense that she deleted the message she’d sent.

You seem very suspicious, what’s making you concerned that there’s more to this?

InMyBloodstainedSundaysBest · 10/02/2019 13:36

Doesn't "this message was deleted" mean it was deleted her end after he'd read it?

YahBasic · 10/02/2019 13:36

With that message, she will have deleted it herself. The chances are she realised she had messaged the wrong person, so deleted the message. A bit like recalling an email.

If he were to have deleted it, it would just be showing as blank.

SciFiScream · 10/02/2019 13:38

I've had random WhatsApp messages from people. You can type any combination of numbers in. If it matches a number with WhatsApp it will get sent. You don't have to have them in your contacts.
I blocked the person.

wingingitwithkids · 10/02/2019 13:39

Like I said in my original post I don’t want to go into details, there are so many helpful posts on mumsnet for relationship problems and affairs etc. I wasn’t snooping but we unfortunately are having problems. I simply wanted advice as to whether this was plausible technologically wise. Thanks for all your helpful and kind responses.

I've put wrong mobile number in and invited someone to my birthday party before now - chap v nice about it
Also had WhatsApp pics from person in Far East I don't know
So yes u can

poglets · 10/02/2019 13:41

'This message was deleted' generally means the sender deleted it. Probably because it was sent in error.
