Package holidays aren’t chavvy!

Polarbearflavour · 02/02/2019 18:27

DH and I booked a half board holiday via Teletext Holidays online. It includes flights and a five star hotel in Malta for a week and is pretty cheap.

A friend of mine made a face and said package holidays are “common” and for chavs. Apparently she only flies BA club class (not charter airlines or low cost airlines) and books hotels separately!

What on Earth is wrong with a package holiday deal?

What did she say when you asked her?

She sounds like a dick tbh

RochelleGoyle · 02/02/2019 18:28

Your friend sounds distinctly unfriendly.

flowery · 02/02/2019 18:29

I think the question you should actually be asking is what on earth is wrong with your friend...

ginghambox · 02/02/2019 18:30

Nothing wrong with package holidays. But MaltaHmm

OwlinaTree · 02/02/2019 18:30

What a snob. I'd say commenting negatively on others' choices is chavvy if she commented again.

southnownorth · 02/02/2019 18:30

BA are crap these days.

Nothing wrong with package holidays.

ChodeofChodeHall · 02/02/2019 18:30

People who use that word are gross. Far better to be looked down on by someone like that than BE someone like that.

MaisyPops · 02/02/2019 18:31

It depends on the package holiday.

If I'm honest, if someone said package holiday to me, my instant image is my idea of hell: big 3* hotels on the med, pools with millions of lounges all reserved by towels from 6am, lots of drinking, eating within the main complex and very little exploration beyond that. Whilst some enjoy that, I hate the idea.

I'm obviously aware that they're not all like that, but the whole hotel complex, pool holidays don't appeal to me whether it's 3 or 5

CandyFlossLegend · 02/02/2019 18:31

Not chavvy because it is a package holiday. It's more certain locations are chavvy. Malta is not one of those afaik.

buckingfrolicks · 02/02/2019 18:32

Historically in the 60s and 70s "we" were scared of travel to Europe so going on a package holiday felt like it was a safe way to travel. Hippies and the elite travelled independently.

So package hols have that echo which some people still hear.

LagunaBubbles · 02/02/2019 18:33

You must know there is absolutely nothing wrong with package holidays surely? Your friend is just being unpleasant and sneery. Not things I find attractive in a friend really.

MrsJayy · 02/02/2019 18:34

Where does your friend holiday? Most people go abroad to a hotel half board for a holiday in the sun don't they? My friend loves Malta she goes every year with her kids.

ThePinkOcelot · 02/02/2019 18:35

Your friend is an arse!

Lonecatwithkitten · 02/02/2019 18:36

Of course she has no ABTA protection whereas you do have it. Package holidays come in all shapes and sizes, we have just booked a 'package holiday' to Canada for our Honeymoon, flights with Air Canada, small boutique hotels and over a grand cheaper than I could do it separately with the benefit of ABTA protection.

PinkGin24 · 02/02/2019 18:36

She has a warped idea of package holidays... what is she defining this as? Just a TA who books flights and accomodation for you is chavvy? If so she is a moron. Is it chavvy to spend £4k to 6k on a luxury all inclusive, adults only carribbean holiday? If so I am a yearly chav...

We book ours separately but this is just because it works out cheaper for us and we can have multi destinations on one holiday if we choose.
If we do long haul we have found it works out cheaper to book a package.
As for Malta, we’ve been 3 times and have really enjoyed it.
There’s lots to see, it’s very historic or you can just laze by the pool in the sun. Also a lively part for the teens.
Something for everyone. Have a lovely time.

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 02/02/2019 18:41

Given the current uncertainty surrounding Brexit, I’d think booking a package holiday was quite prudent.

We’re perfectly happy to go on package holidays. Why not? They’re low hassle, and the DC love AI - particularly the freedom to pick and choose when/what they eat (they’re teenagers).

RedHatsDoNotSuitMe · 02/02/2019 18:44

This --> What a snob. I'd say commenting negatively on others' choices is chavvy if she commented again is the perfect response

Am I the only one who is Shock Shock Shock that you can still get holidays via teletext. I thought that had closed down years ago!

MadeleineMaxwell · 02/02/2019 18:45

Meh, some people are never happy with a holiday unless it's all of you on pallets in a bare room and self-catering with authentic local food, with every second accounted for by 'activities' and everyone down to and including the toddler armed with guidebooks and phrase books.

Me, I go on certain kinds of holiday to relax (cos that's what they're supposed to be for, right?) and others to sightsee and do stuff. It's all good.

I loved Malta, btw. Very jealous!

Mascarponeandwine · 02/02/2019 18:47

My (ex) friend said this the year they booked separates to Florida and we booked TUI to the Balearics. We had an amazing fun time, and they stayed somewhere with black snakes in the pool every morning. Guess who they booked with the following year Grin

Disclaimer - nothing wrong with Florida we are going next year

Girlfromtomorrow · 02/02/2019 18:48

We’ve just (today actually!) booked a package holiday with BA... so that would put her ideas into a spin. Argh...am I package chav or BA snob?...I have no idea now!

caoraich · 02/02/2019 18:53

Nothing wrong with a package hol, everything wrong with this friend!

I don't understand why people sneer at others' holidays, as if it's any of their business.

Downtheroadfirstonleft · 02/02/2019 18:54

You can fly BA Club on package holidays, or at least some. I've done it several times. Hols v nice and I'm def not a chav. 😂

MaisyPops · 02/02/2019 18:57

MadeleineMaxwell
I know some of those types. Smile Also the same types who like to 'travel' but they themselves are never tourists.

They are the types who can't grasp that othet people might holiday differently.

I hate the idea of hotel and pool type holidays. They're my idea of holiday hell. Some probably are quite loud, cheap and cheerful, others are probably very fancy and luxurious. Neither appeal to me. But that doesn't make it ok to be horrible to other people about their holidays.
