Package holidays aren’t chavvy!

Polarbearflavour · 02/02/2019 18:27

DH and I booked a half board holiday via Teletext Holidays online. It includes flights and a five star hotel in Malta for a week and is pretty cheap.

A friend of mine made a face and said package holidays are “common” and for chavs. Apparently she only flies BA club class (not charter airlines or low cost airlines) and books hotels separately!

What on Earth is wrong with a package holiday deal?

Your friends a snob.

Due to my work I know a lot of incredibly wealthy people (multi millionaires) and a lot of them travel economy class and go on package holidays. You wouldn’t know by how they act that they are wealthy.

I personally find the keeping up with the Joneses mentality of your friend more ‘chavvy’ than a package holiday could ever be.

Whocansay · 02/02/2019 18:58

TELETEXT STILL EXISTS?!?!?! MIND BLOWN!!!!

Your friend is an idiot. Ignore her. Forever. (She called you common and a chav, just in case this passed you by).

HowlsMovingBungalow · 02/02/2019 18:58

Teletext still going? I did not know this.

PerfectPeony · 02/02/2019 18:59

I hate the word chavvy. I think anyone who uses that word probably isn’t far off the mark themselves.

ChodeofChodeHall · 02/02/2019 19:00

Calm down, Teletext holidays is a website.

bubblegumbottles · 02/02/2019 19:01

A 'package' holiday to me is just letting someone else do the work for you of booking everything separately! Plus generally the operator will be able to help you if your flight is delayed and you need transfers to your hotel etc. Much easier! Your friend sounds like a knob.

Ever since the volcano eruption that caused the closure of so many airports we have only booked packages.

My sister and her family were in Cape Verde at the time. They had booked an AI package thru Tui. At the start of the hol they had befriended a family who had booked sep flights and accn more cheaply and were kicking themselves for paying more.

However, the volcano happened and everyone was stuck on the island for an extra 9 days. Sis & family were fine, nothing changed and they were even granted a complimentary laundry service. They treated it as a bonus and laughed about their extended luxury.

Those who hadn't booked a package were turfed out. They had to find their own accn and pay for all meals/drinks etc. The other family ended up in a grotty hotel near the airport and their airline was one of the last to restart flights.

The thought of having to do that was enough to make DH and I agree that whilst DD was coming with us, we'd only book packages.

Honeyroar · 02/02/2019 19:02

What a rude thing to say to a friend! She's horrible. Plenty of chavs in business class too. You can't buy class, as she clearly demonstrates!

Bestseller · 02/02/2019 19:02

You've got yourself a good deal and she wishes she were jetting off, or she's the kind of snob whose holidays are mostly for the bragging rights. Not sure why you'd want to be friends. Have a fab holiday

Kpo58 · 02/02/2019 19:03

To me a chavvy holiday is one where you go to a hot country, do nothing all day and get pissed in the evening.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 02/02/2019 19:03

I'm calm thanks. I didn't realise Teletext were still selling holidays - seems not via the TV but from a website.

Ribbonsonabox · 02/02/2019 19:03

My mum would also have said this... cruises too! She thinks anything all inclusive on a resort is for lazy uncultured people...
I went on a package holiday with my friend as an adult and it was actually great fun, never been on a holiday where I could totally relax before.. I get why people do it now!

Butchyrestingface · 02/02/2019 19:04

I love people like this. They're so interesting from an anthropological perspective. Grin

What other cooky views does she have, OP? Where does she stand on the issue of 3 for 2 offers on hummus in Waitrose?

blackteasplease · 02/02/2019 19:04

I don't think whether a holiday is "package" or not tells you anything!

ContessaIsOnADietDammit · 02/02/2019 19:06

I've never booked all inclusive. Is alcohol also included in that?

PerfectPeony · 02/02/2019 19:08

Ribbon I much prefer the phrase lazy uncultured people Grin

mbosnz · 02/02/2019 19:08

Smile sweetly and tell her that fools and their money are soon parted.

mbosnz · 02/02/2019 19:09

And ditto snobs.

MamaLazarou · 02/02/2019 19:09

It is, Contessa - meaning that you don't really get your money's worth if you're teetotal!

StillNumb · 02/02/2019 19:11

Your friend is rude. I do whatever works out best for what I want to do. Will take a package if it's good value, or quite happy to arrange my own. BTW British Airways does lots of 'packages'. I usually book my US flights and car hire with them as a package and get a good deal. Don't think much of BA flight service thought, preferred Virgin.

Chingling · 02/02/2019 19:12

I think booking a package or not is probably a class thing. That doesn't mean it is chavvy.

Bestseller · 02/02/2019 19:15

Don't "posh" people just book fancier packages? For me, the whole point of a holiday is not to have to worry about stuff. We've done med cheap packages and we've also had some excellent cultural and activity holidays in obscure places costing £££££ but they're all packages.

Matilda15 · 02/02/2019 19:18

I’ve booked both, to me I book what’s best for me at the time I want to go. I do wonder sometimes where people get their nerve from them make comments like that! I hope you have a lovely holiday 😊

goingonabearhunt1 · 02/02/2019 19:21

My DM is a bit like this about package holidays (although she wouldn't say it to someone). I'm not really sure why, I think maybe she's imagining lots of brits drunk by a hotel pool or something.

Bluelady · 02/02/2019 19:24

Which hotel, OP? Bet you got it loads cheaper than if you'd booked it and the flights separately and you'll get the same thing. Your friend's an idiot.
