To say I'm happy with Sara Cox on Drivetime?

Put the radio on in the car the other evening and heard this unfamiliar voice (for that time/station) rabbiting on and thought 'not for me' so switched it off.

I'm a fan of the Johnnie Walker / Simon Mayo laid back school of Drivetime broadcasting (hated Chris Evans in that slot) and that brief snippet of Sara Cox in the car wasn't to my liking.

But I've been putting the radio on in the kitchen the past couple of nights preparing dinner and she's winning me over, not least by some of the fantastic music that's being played. The whole show has got a nice fresh feel to it, and she's a lot more chilled than I realised.

I strayed away from Radio 2 when they shoehorned Jo Wiley into that co-presenting thing with Simon Mayo, but I think I'm back.

Anyone else?

I love Sarah Cox and I’m delighted that she’s got the Drivetime gig. And I like Zoe Ball’s morning show too which I didn’t think I would. Zoe has finally calmed down and her show is much better than the Chris Evans Self Love Fest we’ve had to put up with.

workshyfop · 23/01/2019 19:01

I agree. I’ve enjoyed Sara’s shows. Disappointed by Zoe Ball though, the music is crap and the chat is deadly boring.

SirBobblyofSock · 23/01/2019 19:02

She's great- shame Simon Mayo went as I loved his show but I think she's going to be a good replacement. And it's also good to have Jo Whiley back in the evening slot.

MazDazzle · 23/01/2019 19:03

I’ve been a fan of Sara Cox for years. Loved her on Radio 1.

I know I’m getting too old for Radio 1, but when I try to listen to Radio 2 I cringe. Every time one of my favourite Radio 1 DJs moves to Radio 2 I give it another go, but I just can’t stand it!

I wish I could embrace the cheesy, naff, old school vibe of radio 2, but it’s like listening to Alan Partridge and not in a good way. Even down to earth Sara manages to sound cheerfully cheesetastic.

Jeezimacasalinga · 23/01/2019 19:04

Yes I'm enjoying Sara's show - more than Zoe's actually

Readytogogogo · 23/01/2019 19:04

I haven't heard it yet but I've been listening to Sara Cox since she was on radio one and have always really liked her - she's warm and funny.

Snugglepiggy · 23/01/2019 19:04

Love Sarah Cox. I'm a bit older and never listened to her in her 'ladette' days on Radio 1.But as she has been a regular stand in on 2 recently ,and did sounds of the 80s,I've really warmed to her quick and witty but not too in your face style.I'd hoped she would get the breakfast slot as I prefer her to Zoe Ball -but on reflection maybe this slot is ideal for her,and a great wind down to the day.And Zoe is still an improvement on the ego that is Chris Evans.

mamamedic · 23/01/2019 19:06

Such a relief to get rid of Chris Evans and his huge ego. But Zoe not doing it for me. Too breathy. And fake.

Tried Chris Moyles on Radio X. I liked that but children complained about lack of music.

Adore Sara Cox. I've taken to listening to her on catch-up in the morning rather than Zoe.

I've always liked the Today programme when I'm feeling intellectual but it's wall to wall Brexit and I can't do that.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 23/01/2019 19:09

Haven't heard much Sara yet - but I'm giving Zoe a go. Partly because the Today programme is so depressing. Smile

DH said he'd heard today that Simon Mayo is going to a classical station. If this is true it makes a mockery of "leaving to write books"

CharlyAngelic · 23/01/2019 19:09

I like Sara . I also like Jo . I like Simon.
Jo and Simon did not work together.

Miggymoggymugwumps · 23/01/2019 19:14

Yep another Sara Cox fan here, great music, good personality and no tedious celebs waffling on about their latest book, film, play etc... Zoe Ball take note & also stop with the inane chat, saying 'my darling' to everyone and that terrible 7 second dedication thing - so boring!

Jitters22 · 23/01/2019 19:15

Haven't yet listened to Zoe Ball's breakfast, but I'm not really a fan anyway because I don't like that gabbling, breathless style of presentation anyway and she is the epitome of it.

I don't dislike her .. I 'm just not keen on her presenting style on the radio in the same way I used to find Chris Evans intrusive. It starts to grate on my nerves. When you are watching telly you engage both eyes and ears. But with radio, it's only ears. You are doing other things. You want company but you don't want them to command attention in the way the shouty, gabby ones do ... and for me Zoe Ball is in that bracket.

I like the laid back approach - Johnnie Walker, Simon Mayo, Richard Allinson, Mark Radcliffe .. where it's in the background, so you can potter around doing whatever you are doing and it doesn't intrude.

I'm pleasantly surprised at how laid back Sara Cox actually is. Really enjoyed the show the past couple of evenings and the music is really good.

LOVE Sara- used to really like her 80s show on Friday/Saturday nights, really missed that when she was replaced by Oo Gary Davis.

Glad she's finally been given a decent slot, she does a great job.
(Thought it was very unfair when Zoe was given the morning slot when Sara had done such a good job filling in)
Still don't understand the thinking behind giving Zoe the breakfast show and Sara the drive time- feels like it should be the other way round to me.
(But tbh I'm annoyed that the meddling got rid of Simon Mayo who was really good in the drive time slot)

shortaris1 · 23/01/2019 19:17

I love Saz! I walk home to her and she's just a delight.

Cockadoodledooo · 23/01/2019 19:18

I'd rather have had Sara in the breakfast show slot personally.

Paddy1234 · 23/01/2019 19:19

I am so warming to Sara in the drive time slot.

dontlikebeards · 23/01/2019 19:21

I'm loving Sara too, she is doing a great job. Still struggling a bit with Zoe in the mornings, too much chat and not enough decent music.

iklboo · 23/01/2019 19:21

I love Sara. It's like catching up with your best mate over a bottle of wine and good music.

Jitters22 · 23/01/2019 19:25

Yes, it is a real shame.

I'm quite old and have been a Radio 2 listener for donkey's years. I've seen them come and go, and some daft decisions made by the powers that be at Radio 2, but that whole nonsense with putting Jo Wiley as co-presenter and changing the format of what was a hugely successful, popular and much loved show was probably one of the worst they have ever made.

Listeners (who can be fickle) really didn't take to it, and instead of it settling in, it just didn't work and was never going to work. There's no question that's why Simon left and it's a great shame.

But unfortunately it's a done deal now, and in fairness to Sara Cox, I think she's doing a good job and whoever is picking the play list is also. The excellent music, the fresh feel of the show and Sara herself are working for me. I would have rather stuck with Simon and the team .. but if this is what we've ended up with, well it could have been a lot worse.

Always liked Sara Cox & I agree she would do well in the breakfast slot. I didn’t mind Chris Evans but perhaps that was because it was familiar. I haven’t really listened to Zoe Ball properly yet.

MazDazzle · 23/01/2019 19:28

Her ladette days were a bit before my time, but she was still at Radio 1 after she had kids and I used to listen to her then. She was so down to earth and funny.

user1486076969 · 23/01/2019 19:29

Love it

Ifonlyiweretaller · 23/01/2019 20:03

I think Sara is doing a great job. Thre music she plays is like listening to my personal spotify list which is fab! She sounds so warm and engaging, like she's your best mate and you're having a personal chat.
Zoe is taking me more time, but anyone is better than Chris 'ego' Evans.

chilledteacher · 23/01/2019 20:18

Love Sara on drive time! Just the 3 hours before that make me want to cut off my own ears...

SauvignonBlanche · 23/01/2019 20:23

I didn’t realise she’d taken over for good. Blush
She’s better than the Jo/Simon combination but I miss the old Simon Mayo show and am sorry he’s gone.
