To ask for your dog bed recommendations

I have an elderly greyhound who deserves a lovely comfortable bed rather than the ones I have previously purchased which have turned out to be bits of memory foam rather than a nice mattress or have a horrible filling that compresses down to nothing with use. Any recommendations? Thanks Thanks

I find a lot of the beds I have used over the years seem to squash down to nothing, or to go all shapeless when you wash them.

In all honesty the bed my last dog liked best was one of those plastic ones - a nice big one - and I made a good thick layer of fleecy blankets in it for her - then she could twiddle round and round making a nest Grin You can get nice thick fluffy blanket called 'vetinary blanket' or something like that for elderly dogs.

you can also get bean bags for dogs which I think would be comfy for an elderly dog - but I don't know whether they squash easily or not.

BiteyShark · 22/01/2019 19:16

Have you tried a cheap duvet folded over?

florriepeck · 22/01/2019 19:16

My elderly rescue Collie Cross loves his Orvis bed.
Don't think you would find better.
Have a look on the Orvis website.

GlasgowWorrier · 22/01/2019 19:18

After years of picking bits of ripped up dog bed out of the hoover, I got offcuts of decent memory foam from this place and then zipped them into a Tuffies dogbed cover. Dogs love it, particularly old achey ones. It wouldn't be hard to run up your own cover if you've got a sewing machine, or know someone with one?

GlasgowWorrier · 22/01/2019 19:19

Although when the dog's Premium Bonds come up, he's getting an Orvis bed, obvs.

heidiwine · 22/01/2019 19:19

Snoozer cozy cave. Our whippet loves his.

I've bought memory foam beds for my lurchers from Treeline products on ebay and they have lasted really well. Lovely and big, plus the covers come off for washing

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 22/01/2019 19:23

Travel cot mattress covered with a nice soft fleece. You can get a really good quality, 10cm thick one on Amazon for about £15. Just bought this for our lurcher and she's happy.

Aprilshowersarecomingsoon · 22/01/2019 19:26

Yours of course op.

Penninepain · 22/01/2019 19:26

We bought a single memory foam topper (by mistake), and rather than faff around sending it back, i stuck a fleecy cover on it and threw it down in the back kitchen for my two labs.
They live on the bloody thing now - never has a dog bed been so well used in this house!
Best of all, change the cover once a week (or more if dogs mucky), just sling it ij the wash and job done.

I have tried super expensive to folded over duvets in my time, but this knocks spots off the lot.

fenneltea · 22/01/2019 19:26

Ivy and Duke, they often sell the ex display stock from shows at good prices

Imsosorryalan1 · 22/01/2019 19:27

Orvis is the way to go, we've had ours for our lab for over 6 years and it still looks new

Celebelly · 22/01/2019 19:28

Tuffies. Expensive but well worth the money. We've had ours four years or so now and it's still the same shape as the day we bought it, and fleece cover washes really well.

mais · 22/01/2019 19:29

I’ve seen a great recommendation of using a toddler bed for greyhounds - they are up nice and high & away from draughts. You might be able to pick one up secondhand on gumtree etc. You could get a cover for the mattress to protect it/ so that it’s easy to keep clean. That will be my next investment when we have our new house - our greyhound loves sneaking up on the only bed we have downstairs.
It depends if you have the space though too. A folded over quilt as BiteyShark says is good too.

Littleraindrop15 · 22/01/2019 19:32

King size bed with a tempur cool touch mattress from dreams.

Sorry can't help my dog just hates dog beds

ConfessionalProfessional · 22/01/2019 19:32

Either the cot mattress option or

Get a plastic basket and then get a proper foam insert cut and upholstered. It isn’t expensive to do and the foam will be a much better thicker quality.

CountryGirl1234 · 22/01/2019 19:38

We’ve got a lab & JR. Lab has a waterproof dog bed from amazon they do various sizes and cover with a thick fleece lined blanket, towel or normal fleece depending on what’s in the wash. Elli-bo ones are nice, the green one on amazon looks shite but scroll through the other colour options, they’re much nicer in navy but size dependent.

CountryGirl1234 · 22/01/2019 19:39

Also, they love duvets don’t they, option for plastic dog bed with a single duvet? My friend does that for her two.

ElvisParsley · 22/01/2019 19:40

Tuffies. We have both a mattress type and a big nest type.

Mummytoalittleone · 22/01/2019 19:41

Orvis beds are amazing !! Our Goldie loves his !

BiteyShark · 22/01/2019 19:43

The thing is I have bought so many expensive 'good quality' beds but BiteyDog prefers the cheap beds that need replacing more frequently. He just doesn't seem to get comfy on the more 'substantial' beds.

I found he prefers duvets or cheap foam type beds so sometimes it doesn't pay to get the best Hmm

Serialweightwatcher · 22/01/2019 19:43

Our dog's bed was all nice and soft and fluffy but washing it has misshaped it a bit - I lay it on top of a flattish waterproof bed and cover that with a folded up bedspread so it's not cold near the floor and when he goes to bed I cover him up with a soft throw ... he's a pampered pooch

starabara · 22/01/2019 19:48

You need a raised bed, a platform style one, with a mesh top, and two layers of vet fleece bed on top.

I speak from many years of aging, rescued and young bony sighthounds.

Bluebird1234 · 22/01/2019 20:07

Original HiK9 are great. My dog likes being off the floor. They have some ex display ones on their eBay outlet just now. I have bought two via the outlet and you wouldn’t know.

FuzzyPixel · 22/01/2019 20:09

We have an Orvis bed for our dogs. They love it. We also have an Original HiK9 for a different room, which they also like.

I'd recommend either, one dog seems to prefer the Orvis bed and the other favours the Original HiK9.
