To ask for your dog bed recommendations

I have an elderly greyhound who deserves a lovely comfortable bed rather than the ones I have previously purchased which have turned out to be bits of memory foam rather than a nice mattress or have a horrible filling that compresses down to nothing with use. Any recommendations? Thanks Thanks

Starabara is spot on.
All dogs need a raised bed away from draughts and large enough to stretch out on (beds that require them to curl up impair their ability to enter REM sleep which is so important for proper rest).

Annabk · 22/01/2019 20:14

Meant to say, HiK9 are fab Smile

Spanglybangles · 22/01/2019 20:14

Original HiK9 with mesh base and a fleecy topper. Off the floor away from draughts.

Wolfiefan · 22/01/2019 20:16

Don’t buy a dog bed unless you’re prepared to sleep on it. Confused
If you’re in Glos I have an unused one my wusshound has declared terrifying and scary. She has a human mattress by day and a thick duvet with vet fleece over by night.

Myranium · 22/01/2019 20:23

Another vote for both Tuffies and HiK9, with lovely fluffy covers of course.

My lot (mostly whippets, so very comfort-oriented creatures...) love both and will voluntarily use either over the sofas. Sometimes at least Wink

Citations needed!

My dog has multiple beds, mattress type and nest type. She very rarely ever uses the mattress type one. Never seen any sign that she isn’t getting enough sleep, and she certainly gets into REM while curled up, judging by the paw flapping, eyelid twitching and other dream behaviour!

trainedopossum · 22/01/2019 20:43

Op does your grey need wrapping up? We have a whippet cross who insists on being tucked up elaborately and repeatedly in cotton covers (cotton for his skin problems Hmm). He waits for the instant your bum hits the sofa cushion and happily pops out to be tucked in again and again until we get it right.
I was wondering if I could find one of those snuggly sighthound beds with a cotton cover. They all seem to be synthetic.
I'd worry he wouldn't be able to find his way in and I'd still need to do it all for him anyway.

Pumpkintopf · 22/01/2019 23:38

@heidiwine aww, so snuggly!!!

Thanks for all the fab recommendations folks. Shall have a look at them all tomorrow. Thanks

You can get nice thick fluffy blanket called 'vetinary blanket' or something like that for elderly dogs

It's called vet bed.

becauseimpetty · 23/01/2019 05:26

Mine have a few as they like choice. There's a bean bag, a snuggle pod, a snuggle mat, a really big fluffy blanket and of course the couch. They also like to drag the cushions off the couch and sit awkwardly on those.

LottaHogs · 23/01/2019 07:11

We have 5 Lurchers and as 3 of them are getting on in years and get a bit stiff at times, we’ve just invested in 2 Orvis memory foam “sofa style” beds plus a raised Hi-K9 bed. They all get used equally.

A cheaper option, which we also have and which the dogs love, is a Zippy Bed from eBay. They like the ones with 3 enclosed sides. All the sections of the bed unzip so you can remove the foam filling and was it easily.

Aprilshowersarecomingsoon · 23/01/2019 07:48

LottaHogs can we see your 5 Scrats??
Here's mine after claiming the dcats new beds!
Proof indeed that Lurchers are foldable.

April showers how cute are they!! I'm constantly amazed how much these hounds can fold themselves up!

@trainedopossum I have tried covering her with a blanket before- she just looks at me in a long suffering way before moving to get out from under it. The JRT on the other hand will burrow under all throws, blankets, whatever..!

With pleasure Smile
Managed to get this photo of them all looking in the right direction, at the right time in the summer.

My dog loves his pets at home memory foam mattress on a standard plastic bed, yes it's bits but he loves pushing it around to make a best anyway. He has a lovely fleece blanket over it (Aldi)

Paddingtonthebear · 24/01/2019 07:07

We picked up a brand new memory foam Orvis bed on gumtree for £50, the owners dog wouldn’t lie on it apparently. They are £200 new. It’s far too big for our small dog but I couldn’t resist such a bargain. It still looks like new and very easy to wash.

drinkswineoutofamug · 24/01/2019 07:18

My whippet cross loves to curl up in her bed and be snuggled in her fleece. Yes I tuck her in.
We have just got a new sofa and have used the old seat cushions as beds for her too, dotted around the house

DeadCertain · 24/01/2019 07:20

Tuffies mattress with a nice soft cover works well.

AlletrixLeStrange · 24/01/2019 08:19

Would those with Orvis beds say they're pretty tough? I've got 2 young labs that love a cushioned bed to lay on and also eat and I worry about them just laying on their vet bed but don't want to spend £££ if they're easily edible!

SoupDragon · 24/01/2019 08:23

SoupDogg has a cheap plastic bed with an old sofa cushion cover stuffed with fleece blankets. He has form for eating blankets when I used them and this seems to have stopped that. He also can't ruck this stuffed cushion up or pull the stuffing out of it.

He also folds up to fit in the bed I made for the cat!

tinstar · 24/01/2019 08:28

We use a memory foam mattress from a single bed for our 2 old labs. It's very deep so keeps them well off the floor. It has a mattress protector on it and a fleecy cover. They love it and sleep stretched out taking full advantage of all the space. Have wasted so much money on crappy dog beds over the years!

nellieellie · 24/01/2019 08:55

Orvis beds are so lovely, I wish I could sleep on one. However, my large fluffbutt prefers the wood or stone floor, and my little one has embraced the comforts of the Armchair. Sigh. I had to practically remortgage the house to get those beds......
Orvis does extra bulk ones for height - and they DONT sink, different shapes depending on whether they’re curlers or stretchers, beds with bolsters, a choice of fillings and covers. I almost want another dog just so I can have a dog actually in an Orvis bed.....

Greyhound22 · 24/01/2019 09:02

Are you on Facebook OP?

There is a page called Joystitchworks. Bespoke beds made with memory foam inners - she makes a lot for greyhounds. I have also got a waterproof inner on mine as my boy is old and has had the odd accident.
