AIBU to think Jan's parents were weird as fuck and he Dad seemed to enjoy recounting things a little too much?

I found the whole thing bizzare from them not reporting her missing for days the first time and weeks the second to them allowing a man to sleep in her bed?!

The mum sleeping with the pervert and the Dad too.

The whole thing was so disturbing.

Also them signing the affidavits so their affair wouldn't come out Shock

Yes I felt exactly the same way, I was horrified!

I felt sorry for the parents at first as the neighbour was obviously a master manipulator but the further it went on the more I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. That poor girl. It must have taken so much for her to forgive them for that.

They were more concerned about their image in the community/ church than the fact that their daughter was clearly being groomed and then abused. It really upset me.

ItsameAmario · 20/01/2019 22:21

Same. At first I thought they were groomed too but as it went on I just felt like they got a kick out of it all too.

I mean the mum slept with B AFTER he had Abducted her daughter the first time.

I think they should have been prosecuted. It's disgusting and horrific that they were both having sex with him and allowing him to abuse Jan at the same time.

ItsameAmario · 21/01/2019 08:09

Agreed. At least investigated.
Get really weird vibes from them both.

This is the oddest documentary I've ever seen.

WatcherOfTheNight · 21/01/2019 19:25

Definitely not what I expected!
I couldn't believe the mum & dad Shock

It shows how devious child predators can be that's for sure, but something doesn't seem right about it imo.
How could they not know he was in & out of their house ?

Pk37 · 21/01/2019 19:29

I haven’t watched it yet but have set a reminder on my phone to watch it tomorrow.
All sounds so bizarre

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 21/01/2019 21:56

Im watching it now. It seems they were more concerned with being good mormons, they pushed her aside.

Who waits so long to report their child missing, then allows that man access to do it again and waiting weeks to report it.

Its sick.

viktoria · 21/01/2019 22:16

Watched it earlier today and as a previous poster said - couldn't believe what I was seeing.
I literally shouted at my TV, things like "you did what?"
I think the parents were extremely naive.
Certainly after the first abduction I think they just didn't want to to see the truth, but instead chose to believe what Jan at that point told them.
Crazy story

therewillbetime · 21/01/2019 22:18

This is so weird. What struck me was the way that the mum recalled her affair with a wistful smile. The mum must surely have some sort of personality disorder.

And the fact that B slept with their daughter for months as part of their therapy? I really, really don't get how anybody (with a certain IQ) could not see that this was weird.

Pk37 · 22/01/2019 11:23

Creepy family , they were all very smiley recounting stuff.
Very odd

BartonHollow · 22/01/2019 17:58

I'm watching this right now and the way they didn't report for 5 days and the creepy statements to camera ?

Horrifying

BartonHollow · 22/01/2019 18:06

They let him sleep in her bed for his therapy four times a week AND DIDNT SEE THE RED FLAGS

I wonder that she speaks to them at all

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 22/01/2019 19:52

I wonder what possessed them to make the doc. It seems they havent grasp how fucked up it is.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 22/01/2019 20:09

I didn’t watch it all because it was just too weird. I agree about the mum’s wistful remembering of the affair. Was all just fucked up.

Smoggle · 22/01/2019 21:11

They were very naive, but it's easy to forget that child abuse wasn't really talked about then - even the fbi bloke said he didn't understand paedophilia as a thing Confused

The parents were clearly very easy to manipulate - they would be a dream for Derren Brown! It does show how a whole family is groomed, not just the child.

BartonHollow · 22/01/2019 21:26

They were a fucktonne more than "naive" they repeatedly turned a blind eye, enabled him, and were frankly negligent

Even for The Seventies

Mummysharkdoodoodoo · 22/01/2019 21:53

Listening to the phone call from jan to her dad and he asks if he still wants to marry her, like why would you ask that after months of no contact

HappyStripper · 22/01/2019 23:26

@Mummysharkdoodoodoo

I think that was more of a keeping her on their side tactic. If they immediately started shouting at her to come home etc she’d most likely hang up or B would have.

I definitely agree that the parents were incredibly idiotic and didn’t have Jan as a priority in the slightest. However it definitely was a time when pedophilia etc wasn’t discussed or thought of. Abuse wouldn’t come to minds in the same immediate way it does now. You’d be surprised how many similar casss there were or simply how many people thought their 15 year old daughter finding a 40 year as a good thing as he’s “experienced”.

LiftedHigh · 23/01/2019 12:00

Whattttt i turned on after seeing thus thread. Seriously....whatttt!
In the sane sentence as talking about their Mormon church visit they discuss a the wife cheating. Then the husband engages in a gay act with him.
Why are they saying all this on screen?!
Bizarre

BringMeTea · 23/01/2019 14:20

Wow! That was the most bizarre thing I think I've ever seen. Poor poor girl. Shit parents. B's brother was a total creep too. Just dreadful people.

WatcherOfTheNight · 23/01/2019 14:56

Have any of you watched Mommy dead & dearest ?
That's another documentary I watched open mouthed .

E3Mgn · 23/01/2019 16:44

This was so disturbing - those parents should be locked up for neglect. The whole family were just bloody weird - even Bs brother admitted he knew what he was up to but did nothing about it. If there was an award for worst parents these two selfish pathetic & perverted creeps should get it. 🤬

Fiddie · 23/01/2019 17:05

If there was ever a reason to go nc with your parents...
