To thing my coil is making me fat(ter)

I’m not hugely overweight but could do with losing a stone or two to be comfortable.
I had it inserted about 6 months ago. I think time, I’ve tried repeated to lose weight with no success. I’ve only put on a couple of lbs but I’m now a bloated, wobbly mess where I used to be firmer.
Is it just age (38) or has anyone else had a similar problem?

Do you have the copper coil or the one with hormones in it?

Sleepyhead11 · 16/01/2019 22:28

Is it Mirena?

LoopyLou1981 · 16/01/2019 22:29

The hormone one (Mirena)

My weight increased with the mirena. Gained 10lbs very quickly. Took a while to lose again. It was removed when I had my hysterectomy. No extra weight gain on hrt.

DareDevil223 · 16/01/2019 22:47

Despite medical opinion I found it impossible to lose weight when I had a Mirena coil and it made me feel horrible (I'd got on just fine with the copper coil). I made them take it out and the weight started coming off.

8dayweek · 16/01/2019 23:01

Oooh, interesting. I've got a copper coil (was fitted about 4.5 years ago) and since having it I've gone from a size 6/8 to a size 12 (I never weigh myself but I'm guessing it's at least 3 stone)... In my head it's not the coil as there's no hormones etc but it's literally the only thing that's changed!

8dayweek · 16/01/2019 23:02

And nothing I do diet / exercise-wise makes much of a difference!

Ucangourownwoo · 16/01/2019 23:03

My weight increased when I got a Modena. Annoyingly.

Ucangourownwoo · 16/01/2019 23:03

Mirena...

TheFairyCaravan · 16/01/2019 23:05

YANBU. Weight gain was one of the many side effects I had with the Mirena. Once I had it removed I was back to my normal weight really quickly.

ShesABelter · 16/01/2019 23:07

Yeah I gained about a stone with the Mirena. Doctor was saying the hormones don't leave your womb it's not that. Nothing worked to lose it. Got it out after the three years and it came off very quickly.

Imnotweirdimlimitededition1 · 16/01/2019 23:09

Yes I'm on mirena weight gain and difficult to shift no matter what tummy still bloated

ShesABelter · 16/01/2019 23:09

8dayaweek the copper coil can't make you gain weight. The Mirena will as it has hormones in it. But non hormone copper won't.

Have you had your thyroid checked?

BigBairyHollocks · 16/01/2019 23:14

I am the same with the mirena, hate the bloody thing despite having no periods with it.Bren trying and failing to have a medical practitioner remove it but apparently it’s everyone else’s job and I am fobbed off.No one gives a shit about women’s reproductive health Angry

Sugarformyhoney · 16/01/2019 23:23

I’ve got the mirena and it gave me acne to begin with but no weight gain

8dayweek · 16/01/2019 23:32

@ShesABelter I know, I know. It's just frustration that I can't pin it down on anything else I guess! And yep, had it checked (especially as I boil at night and literally pour with sweat to the extent I wake myself up when I roll over and sweat rolls across my body) but nope, all fine apparently!

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 16/01/2019 23:51

I'm having my copper coil out shortly, I'm not getting it replaced immediately as I want to see if it makes any difference to my weight. In theory it shouldn't, but I've come across a few people who reckon it has impacted them.

LoopyLou1981 · 17/01/2019 05:50

Not just me then! It’s so frustrating. All other aspects of it are great (no periods, no remembering other contraception) but the weight thing is really getting me down 🙁 x

Ifangyow · 17/01/2019 06:03

Thank God it's not just me affected by this.
I had the mirena replaced two years ago and in that time I've gained a ridiculous amount of weight, despite nothing else changing in my lifestyle. I have a healthy diet and exercise regularly with no result.
I suspected it might be due to the mirena, but dismissed it due to it not happening with my previous mirena.
I've has my recent health check, including thyroid, which have come back in the clear, hence my suspicion.
Time to get it removed I think after reading the comments above.

BusySnipingOnCallOfDuty · 17/01/2019 06:07

I've found all hormonal contraceptives have messed my body up. Weight gain and loss of control of my moods and behaviour.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 17/01/2019 06:11

I've found the mirena increases my appetite so I've gained weight because I'm eating more

Kikipost · 17/01/2019 06:12

My weight didn’t increase in the slightest

It did affect my mood though and I had it removed

MadauntofA · 17/01/2019 07:04

I've put on a stone in the last couple of months a little might be Xmas related, and had been impossible to lose, thyroid checked, which was normal (previously had hyperthyroidism). I was thinking it was perimenopausal even though I'm only just 40, hasn't occurred to me that it might be the coil I had put in 4mths ago. Still, no periods for 3mths which is amazing after years of v v heavy ones, and no mood changes, so going to have to overhaul my diet Confused

MadauntofA · 17/01/2019 07:09

What I don't quite understand is I was this weight on the combined pill (understandable), then lost the weight when I had the implant in, and only gained it back after the coil, but the coil is supposed to be a lower dose of the same hormone in the implant!

GinTimeAtHome · 17/01/2019 08:17

I piled on lots and lots of weight with my coil. And it wouldn’t shift. No matter what I did.

I had mine taken out in December and I’ve already lost 8lbs without really trying to diet.
