A thread of support for Nazanin Zaghari Ratcliffe as she begins her hunger strike

JaneHare · 14/01/2019 10:58

Shamelessly posting here for traffic.

Nazanin has been imprisoned in an Iranian jail for almost 3 years on trumped up spying charges. Separated from her young daughter and husband, she is starting a 3 day hunger strike to protest her horrendous treatment and being denied specialist investigations for breast lumps and numbness in her arms.

I can't imagine how it must feel to be taken away from my baby and only allowed to see her on restricted visits.

Standing with Nazanin, her husband Richard and daughter Gabriella.

That poor woman. And her poor child and husband.

Noshana · 14/01/2019 11:02

It makes me so angry.

Boris Johnson bungled her case so horrificly - saying she was ‘training journalists’. What a lazy half wit he is.

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 14/01/2019 11:04

My thoughts are with the family and that I hope she can return home. This is a reminder never to get comfortable with any attempt at theocracy to infiltrate government.

Pissedoffdotcom · 14/01/2019 11:06

Hope her efforts aren't in vain. Her treatment has been appalling & yep, as above, Boris Johnson is a muppet. I'd be gunning for him massively if I was family.

100% support her hunger strike, sending strength her way

Helmetbymidnight · 14/01/2019 11:07

Poor Nazanin, I really feel for her and her family.

Johnson's handling of this case was not bungled and he's no muppet, he was grossly negligent. We need to stop dressing this man up as some kind of clown, he's an extremely intelligent man, which can only lead me to assume his actions were intentional.

It is a horrific case and our government are complicit in her unlawful detention.

QwertyLou · 14/01/2019 11:16

I feel for her and her family, her daughter is so young to be separated from her mother too Flowers

THIS ^ It reminds me of all those threads where men do a piss poor job of the laundry, shopping or other task in the hope that they are not asked to do it again. He is an intelligent well educated person and to claim he botched it or he didn't know what he was doing is beyond crass.

KarineAimee · 14/01/2019 11:26

I join you in support for Nazanin, and hope she’ll be free soon.

Pissedoffdotcom · 14/01/2019 11:26

I don't believe for one second he is a clown. I firmly believe he knew exactly what he was doing. Unfortunately there is no way to prove it. So calling him a muppet is the politest way to describe him without getting myself into trouble 😂

AnyFucker · 14/01/2019 11:30

I wish I could do more. This case is baffling and appalling.

EssentialHummus · 14/01/2019 11:34

My thoughts are with her, her husband, daughter and parents. I was hopeful that that furlough meant she would be released Sad.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 14/01/2019 11:34

Jeremy Hunt needs to make things happen. I feel for their whole family.

tiggerkid · 14/01/2019 11:35

To be honest I reserve my judgement on that situation. We don't know any facts besides those presented by the British press. This generally tends to be the case in most situations. I think I would have liked to hear what the Iranians have got to say about that before deciding whether or not I think she is guilty of anything being laid at her door.

At the moment, I just find it very hard to believe that someone just gets arrested for the mere fact of visiting relatives. Yes, I know we keep being told that Iran is just not as democratic and civilised as Western countries but I honestly think that it's rather arrogant to keep assuming that we are more civilised than everyone else just because everyone else happens to do things differently.

Yes, it is very sad that this lady got arrested. I certainly feel bad for her daughter and her husband but I don't think I am that convinced that she completely innocent without knowing absolutely anything other than the stories told by the British media.

I am certainly clear on one fact: there is no real freedom of speech in any country in the world. We did go to the illegal war with Iraq because of only certain facts being presented to us selectively. We also went to war with Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Lybia and God knows who else... We are always told that we are fighting for democracy and better lives of people in those countries by our press. And yet after each of these wars, nobody answers a simple question: in which of these countries did anyone ever start living better than they did before we went to war there? And the answer is: nowhere! Not a single one of these countries started living better. It's just absolute chaos everywhere. And now in Syria too.

So do I believe our press? No. And that applies to this lady too. She may well be innocent but I find it hard to say that I think so with the absolute certainty without knowing absolutely anything about the thought process of the Iranian government in this case!

This is entirely irrelevant, and the fact that you are bringing this in here, shows me that you don't know what you are talking about.
This is a thread of support for Nazanin. If you are not convinced by her innocence, or you want to discuss Western Foreign policy, perhaps start a thread of your own.

I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like if I were forcibly imprisoned separated from my little daughter for so long. I can't believe Boris said such a stupid thing as well rather than using all his power to try and get her out.

Posting in support of nazanin. Ive been following this and the iranians need to let her out and allow her and her daughter to return home to the uk as soon as possible.

JaneHare · 14/01/2019 12:06

I started this thread so any MNetters who wanted to stand in solidarity with the family over the next 3 days could post on it. I was going to ask someone to tweet it so they might be aware of it.

It's been derailed so I'm going to ask MNHQ to delete it. Don't think it will comfort her family to read someone saying they don't believe her or the Boris Johnson fiasco being rehashed.

Thanks for those who did offer support.

Helmetbymidnight you call someone dim and then talk about "which crimes they think she has permitted?".
