To not let DS travel in lorry with DP?

My DP has agreed to work tomorrow on Saturday which is annoying as it's the only time he, DS and I get together as a family but he's agreed to it now so that's that. But he thinks I'm being unreasonable by saying he can't take DS (who is 2) with him to work in a big lorry. DS doesn't sit well on journeys for more than 20 minutes anyway and I just feel that it's unsafe? AIBU?

Is he even allowed to have a child in his lorry at work? Surely health and safety would have something to say

Mine love being in lorry with their dad and travelled from young age. Put child seat in and away they go

Will he be in a proper safe car seat?

If he is YABU, travelling in daddy's lorry is way better than a car.

If he is not in a proper safe car seat, then he can't go anyway.

His work have told him he's allowed but I don't believe it would actually be legal surely! I just think it sounds so unsafe and can't believe he would be happy to stick DS in a lorry with him!

Why wouldn’t it be safe? Getting to go to work with my dad in his lorry are some of the best memories I have of him. Admittedly I was a couple of years older. I’m not sure why it would be illegal?!

Maybe I am just being overprotective, but the lorry is very old and run down, DP complains about faults with it all the time and how his work don't fix them properly and how it stinks of smoke from others ignoring the no smoking law. I just have the impression that it's not very safe and wouldn't want DS travelling in it.

Some of my best memories as a child and teenager were driving long haul over half terms and holidays in my dads lorry, so YABU. It’s a good way for dad and son to bond, and if you continue as he gets older he will get to see different places and learn some valuable skills.

Make sure he has a safe seat and maybe send him with something to keep him occupied, but otherwise the change in scenery and what’s happening on the roads will be plenty of entertainment. Don’t worry so much, he will love it I’m sure.

Im sure dp wouldn't take him if he didn't feel it was safe.
im sure dc would love that , sounds a lot more fun than sitting in the back of a car

My dd very often goes to work with my dh who’s a lorry driver. She has her car seat and is properly strapped in and she absolutely loves it!

There are certain depots he can’t go to with her as they don’t allow passengers or children but ing as he only visits those who allow her he’s fine. She gets spoilt rotten by the staff there and has a whale of a time.

My kids used to love going in their grandad's lorry when they were very little. I guess if you don't want him to go fair enough.
We have loads of pictures of Ds1 in his car seat grinning away.

I usually pack her off with drawing equipment, her kindle, books and a packed lunch with lots of snacks. Sat up high is really exciting for them and she’s now a dab hand at identifying all the different lorries and has picked up the lingo (hand balling, tractor unit, drag and drop)

I used to do the same with my dad and it’s a great way of spending time with dad, giving you a break and some proper bonding time that’s specific to dad

How long would DS be in the lorry -- all day? I think anything over 30 minutes would be pushing it. The novelty will wear off and he'll want drinks, snacks, a new nappy, and your DP won't be able to do anything because he's driving a massive LORRY.

Can you go too? Make it a family thing?

I pretty much grew up in the cab of my dad's big rig. This was in the days before child seats of course. I honestly don't why there's any increased risk to your child in a properly installed child seat in a lorry as opposed to a car. If his employers are ok with it, you're being a bit precious.

I probably am being a bit dramatic. I just have visions of a falling apart lorry and my DS shouting to be let out the car seat because he's getting restless and DP getting stressed and driving all over the road.

You do know that a car only needs an mot once a year and a lorry gets tested every few weeks

My dh has very fond memories of going round in lorries with his dad

He hopes to get his own license and do it with our children

However, your ds is only 2 and it’s haed enough getting them to sit in a car seat for journeys let along long journeys. I would wait until he was a bit older

So many mothers seem hell bent on taking any fun from their children's lives! I honestly think it's a form of jealousy if the father can give them a fun experience that they can't!
My husband, 71, still remembers the times he was taken on site by his father who was a supervisor of building works, his father died when my OH was 8 or 9 and those memories are so precious to him.

My husband used to go in his Dad's lorry all the time. They used to go up and down the country together and sing songs etc
He loved it, and that was before car seats.
