To not let DS travel in lorry with DP?

Anonni · 11/01/2019 17:08

My DP has agreed to work tomorrow on Saturday which is annoying as it's the only time he, DS and I get together as a family but he's agreed to it now so that's that. But he thinks I'm being unreasonable by saying he can't take DS (who is 2) with him to work in a big lorry. DS doesn't sit well on journeys for more than 20 minutes anyway and I just feel that it's unsafe? AIBU?

I used to love going out in my dad's lorry. In the summer holidays occasionally my brother would go to my cousins for the day and my dad would wake me up at 3.30am and we'd go to down the country in the lorry, have lunch at breakfast time. They were the best days.

hmwhatsmynameagain · 11/01/2019 20:27

Some of my best early school holiday memories (so older than your son) were being out in the lorry with my grandad.
I would complain about car journeys a fraction of the distance I would go with grand for the day in a lorry

PolkaDoting · 11/01/2019 20:36

I used to love going out in my dads lorry. Bit older than two though, but still, surely your DH knows his own child?!

PolkaDoting · 11/01/2019 20:38

Ha! Some kind of Dads Lorry Club forming here!

Craft1905 · 11/01/2019 20:47

His work have told him he's allowed but I don't believe it would actually be legal surely!

Why on Earth would it be illegal? It's got passenger seats, to carry passengers. Obviously a youngster has to be in a suitable car seat, as would be the case in a car. .

NewName54321 · 11/01/2019 21:49

He'll be safer in the lorry than in a car.

Knowivedonewrong · 11/01/2019 22:10

I used to go with my dad in his Lorry all the time, even on trips to London.
There were no car seats or seat belts then.
I used to love it and I was perfectly safe.

Not sure how you’ve come to this conclusion

Some depots he visits might not let passengers or kids on site due to health and safety reasons. But most do let passengers in and my dd has had many a tour around warehouses from bored supervisors.

As for insurance, most (if not all) transport companies are insured to take passengers in the lorries

Biffsboys · 11/01/2019 23:41

A friend of mine exdh was a lorry driver and used to take her son with him a lot . One day the lorry tipped and he hit his head and died instantly- her ds was not with him that day thankfully! It’s not the same as just a car trip .

All vehicle insurance policies have to give full passenger liability cover by law.

Right? It’s brilliant to see how many former road kids there are. I’ve been having a real nostalgia wallow reading this thread. Some of my best childhood memories come from those trips with my dad and my little brother who are both dead now.

I was thinking about all the transport caffs we used to stop at, best fry ups and greasy mugs of tea in the world. And the kind pub landladies who would let us use their bathrooms to get bathed and changed when we were staying overnight at lorry parks. There was one who sticks in my memory at a pub in Bethnal Green near a big lorry park there was (maybe still is) there. She was lovely, used to let me and my brother sit up in her living room to watch tv while my dad had a pint downstairs with the other drivers. And akso near there there was a lady, I think the mother of the man who owned a Chinese restaurant my dad liked to eat at, didn’t speak a word of English and we didn’t speak Chinese but she used to make such a fuss of us and always had little gifts for us when we went there. It’s thanks to her I can use chopsticks like a pro too.

This is just scaremongering, children also sadly get killed in cars, as pedestrians on bikes etc. If you avoided every possible danger you'd do nothing. Let the LO go, he'll love it!

Awwwww, do you remember this Nizlopi track?

And this is about a JCB!

g.co/kgs/4nDq22

LYRICS Well, I'm rumblin' in this JCB I'm 5 years old and my dad's giant sitting beside me And the engine rattles my bum like berserk While we're singin, "Don't forget your shovel if you want to go to work!" My dad's totally had a bloody hard day But he's been good fun and bubblin and jokin' away And the procession of cars stuck behind Are gettin all impatient and angry, but we dont mind An' we're holdin up the bypass Oh Me and my dad havin a top laugh Oh woah Sittin on the toolbox Oh And I'm so glad I'm not in school, boss So glad I'm not in school Oh no... And we pull over to let the cars pass And pull off again, speedin by the summer green grass And we're like giants up here in our big yellow digger Like zoids, or transformers, or maybe even bigger And I wanna transform into a Tyrannosaurus Rex! And eat up all the bullies and the teachers and their pets And I'll tell em I'm 8, my dad's ba barakas Only with a JCB and Bruce Lee's nunchuckas And we're holdin up the bypass Oh Me and my dad havin' a top laugh Oh woah Sittin' on the toolbox Oh And I'm so glad I'm not in school, boss So glad I'm not in school And we're holdin' up the bypass Oh oh Me and my dad havin' a top laugh Oh woah I'm sittin on the toolbox Oh oh And I'm so glad I'm not in school box So glad I'm not in school

Said I'm Luke, I'm five, and my dad's Bruce Lee. Drives me round in his JCB.

Let him go and enjoy some time to yourself, lorry’s have a lower speed limit and if you look at the stats are far safer than cars

Anonni · 12/01/2019 07:38

I feel a bit silly after reading all the messages! I honestly don't know why I get so anxious at the thought of DS being in the lorry with DP! But having read the replies it does make sense that a lorry would actually be safer than a car. I'm probably just transferring my own subconscious fear of lorries or something silly.

If there is another opportunity maybe go with them? Dad used to take us on trips and sometimes mum came too. Some of my fondest childhood memories were those trips.

Sirzy · 12/01/2019 08:49

My partner is a HGV driver. Ds was over the moon last week just getting to look in and around it when he was parked up locally.

As a tramper taking ds with him would be problematic but if the chance for an authorised trip with him came up I know ds would love it

Anonni · 12/01/2019 08:50

I've spoken with DP and we can all go this afternoon/evening so I'm thinking I'll do that.

Completely understandable to be anxious!

Sounds like you and your husband have come up with a perfect solution.

I think this will be a really happy experience and memory for all of you.

CosmicCanary · 12/01/2019 09:02

I am another lorry kid Grin

I loved going to work with my dad and this was before car seats when I was 3 yo.
We would always stop at some greasy spoon truckers cafe. I received lots of attention from the other truckers who gave me treats played games and listened to my endless chatter. They are some of my happiest memories.

Charlie97 · 12/01/2019 09:13

Ah well done OP, enjoy a rest (and be prepared for your ears to be worn out when he gets back and tells you ALL about daddy's lorry.....repeatedly over and o Ed), Grin

Charlie97 · 12/01/2019 09:14

Sorry didn't see you were all going, next time let him go alone and you rest.
