To hate all the sodding daytime quiz and antique shows

I work from home. Often have the TV on for background noise distraction from doing real work .

Bloody daytime quiz shows are so annoying, vacuous, waste of airtime, cheesy unfunny jokes, awkwardly staged anecdotes, questions so easy an idiot could answer them, hosted by brain dead career end oompa loompas...I could go on.

And the antique shows are just as bad.

And I love both antiques and quizzes.

I really should be doing some work today!

I don't really watch quiz programmes or any other tv really.
Why don't you try the radio, at least you get news and current affairs.
I don't wfh though, so tend to pursue interests and hobbies.

jessstan2 · 08/01/2019 13:20

I don't watch things like that. Used not to put TV on at all during the day but now I do: I watch Classic Eastenders and Classic Coronation Street, sometimes Heartbeat the The Royal. A bit of nostalgia. Occasionally Law & Order.

pixilatedpenguin · 08/01/2019 13:21

I never watch anything like that, December was darts, this week darts and next week snooker 😂

Tony2 · 08/01/2019 13:24

The BBC, the Mail of the airwaves. How much is your house worth? Got a spare half mill to move to Kent or the Costa del sol? How much is that Gainsborough in the attic worth? How much moolah can you make? What to do with your 3 acre garden? Look at the scroungers! Follow the bailiffs!
Tradesmen, all scum Here'sthe news for the curtain twitching middle class. (We used to do science but Michael Mosley does indeed work for the mail now). Quiz yesterday, what's a thermometer for? What does Papal mean? Tele for the brain dead or grasping. The zombie apocalypse has arrived!

IAmALionessHearMeRoar · 08/01/2019 13:24

I don't watch them either! They just dominate terrestrial channels daytime airtime and it annoys me because there should be better and different stuff on that I can not watch while I get on with work

If anyone tells me to turn over/off, I do!!! But not without having caught the start of the programme and having searched for something different on the other side and found nothing.

I hate the cheap copies of Location Location Location. Particularly that one where the couple decide between living in a town or a rural area - the houses are usually equally ordinary and boring and the 'town' and 'rural area' are usually just small suburbs but one is near fields and the other isn't.

lostinjapan · 08/01/2019 13:39

Judge Rinder’s Crime Stories is good, if you’re into that sort of thing. And there was an interesting BBC show called Murder, My Family and Me, which is back this year I think. I like Rip-Off Britain too.

The antiques and property shows are the worst for me. I enjoy quiz shows if they’ve got a good format (like The Chase) but most of them are pretty crap.

pizzacrisps · 08/01/2019 13:50

Tipping point and The Chase are ok but the rest! Awful

ohbigdaddio · 08/01/2019 13:53

Get radio 4 on! Wink

Wintertea · 08/01/2019 13:56

I get bored with programmes about Ken and Irene looking for a holiday apartment in a Spanish resort. 3 virtually identical apartments in 3 areas that look more or less the same. Followed by Ken and Irene deciding they'll 'have a think about it, and maybe look at some more places'.

ToffeePennie · 08/01/2019 13:59

This is why we don’t have terrestrial tv!
We have Netflix and amazon prime instead and if you can get used to knowing what you want to watch (or know what kind of programmes don’t distract you too much - I personally like sugar rush, zumbos greatest desserts and nailed it) then it’s a much nicer way to watch tv.

starfishmummy · 08/01/2019 14:01

It's when you realise that you have seen the episode of "bargain hunt bootsale under the hammer in the attic roadtrip" 700 times before even though you gave up watching it regularly ten years ago

SpoonBlender · 08/01/2019 14:05

Listen to music instead. It's far better than the drivel that gets broadcast, less distracting, and will improve your mood rather then depress you. Win win win.

Lydiaatthebarre · 08/01/2019 14:06

I agree. Radio 4 is much nicer to have on in the background than thirty year old episodes of 'Only Fools and Horses' and 'Murder She Wrote'.

RayRayBidet · 08/01/2019 14:07

I like Absolute 80's

Twisique · 08/01/2019 14:09

I wish they would do a nice holiday program, like Wish You Were Here.

MissionItsPossible · 08/01/2019 14:12

I'm off work at the moment and just spent an hour half watching some holiday programme on in the background for the couple to decide at the end they didn't set aside a high enough budget so they weren't going to buy a holiday home just yet after all. My face was like Hmm. What was the point?

Lydiaatthebarre · 08/01/2019 14:13

Father Brown is back on from this week. Now that's good day time telly.

Lydiaatthebarre · 08/01/2019 14:14

I don't get the point of property programmes where you're not told whether the couple actually buy one of the properties or not.

werideatdawn · 08/01/2019 14:16

It's all awful, without exception. If it's not bailiffs and scroungers it's crap renovations. The harpies on ITV aren't much better. We do radio now.

werideatdawn · 08/01/2019 14:17

I lived Wish You Were Here. Also Holiday Showdown. That was cracking.

DoneLikeAKipper · 08/01/2019 14:27

Ah trust MN to breate you for daring turn on the tv when there's Radio 4 to listen to.

Daytime quiz shows tend to be cheap and cheesy. Impossible was a rare exception, I think that's why it got the Pointless spot when that's on hiatus. Then again, Only Connect has the cheesiest jokes on tv, and that actually requires some brain cells to play, and it's not even the 'horror' that is daytime tv.

The Chase is terrible, the sexism and misogyny against the female chasers is shocking in this day and age (especially against Anne).

Not all daytime is bad - I could watch Homes Under The Hammer all day long Blush.

whatsthepointthen · 08/01/2019 14:28

I love the chase Grin

Thelightofjanuary · 08/01/2019 14:29

Eh, it was the OP who was complaining about the poor quality of daytime TV. Some posters just pointed out that radio makes a better background companion during the day.
