To think you don’t watch Friends like this

DD 13 has just discovered Friends on tv. Instead of starting at the beginning and working through the series, she just watches them randomly. So one minute Ross is married to Rachel (who doesn’t know), the next we’re back when he has a pet monkey, then I blink and he’s married again, but to an earlier wife.
I adored Friends as a late teen/ twentysomething and have seen every episode but I watched them in order as they aired, and always eagerly awaited every new series. I just feel like she’s not getting the same experience this way. It’s also clogging up my sky Q, we’ve got 76 episodes recorded and another 3 million on the planner!
I realise I’m being irrational here btw. But seriously, she’s not watching it right is she! Grin

She's so not watching it right, how can you get caught up in the week they won't they moments if you already know the outcome?

pretentiousrubberduck · 03/01/2019 10:19

The only way you can watch the episodes randomly is after you've watched the whole thing in order first!

x2boys · 03/01/2019 10:21

I watch them randomly, but I have seen them in order ,eleventy billion times .....

DannyWallace · 03/01/2019 10:21

No, she's doing it wrong!

If she's not watching it properly, how will she be able to decide if she's team Ross or team Rachel??!

gardengrass321 · 03/01/2019 10:22

Stick the first one on Netflix for her and only when she's completed all 10 series is she allowed to watch them randomley

TwoleftUggs · 03/01/2019 10:22

And I’m sick of her asking ‘who’s that’ all the time. If you bloody well watched the episode before it you’d know wouldn’t you.

I used to do this then I got the DVD box set for Christmas when I was about 17. I only knew of some of the main stories such as Ross & Rachel, Monica & Chandler, baby Emma etc. When I watched it from the start I had no idea about Phoebe and the triplets or Ross & Emily.

You definitely can't watch them randomly it wrong Grin

UrsulaPandress · 03/01/2019 10:24

We watch Frasier like that. But we are word perfect.

InTheBirdBox · 03/01/2019 10:25

Could she BE anymore wrong!

Binkyboi · 03/01/2019 10:26

Imagine the treat of getting to watch Friends from the beginning for the first time! 😊

MsVestibule · 03/01/2019 10:26

Could she BE any wronger? Fine to watch them out of sequence when you're already word perfect, but not like this. No way. Any consequences you can give her?

Snowydaysaregreat · 03/01/2019 10:26

My dp has just discovered friends. I got a complete box set on facebay for a fiver. Got to be done in order,

MsVestibule · 03/01/2019 10:27

@inthebirdbox you beat me to it 😫

DayManChampionOfTheSun · 03/01/2019 10:28

Have you got Netflix? The whole thing is on there and then you won't have it clogged up on your sky planner!

I recently rewatched the whole thing hahaha, it's still great!

ineedaholidaynow · 03/01/2019 10:31

We got the Boxset for Christmas 2017, and DS wasn't interested in watching it then. DH and I started watching it in order. In the last few months DS has now become interested in it and has started to watch the boxset from the start, but also watches it when we are watching it. It has also started being shown on Channel 5, so we sometimes watch it then. I get so confused where we are on the timeline now!

Ampersandcolon · 03/01/2019 10:31

I blame the parents. You've got to sort your kid out. This is a walking disaster. My own 11-year - old is trying this shit. I'm explaining forcefully and urgently that this is all wrong. We should form a support group

Bathbombs · 03/01/2019 10:31

Back in the day I came to friends a bit late and we only had a couple of friends videos from series 2! I knew them off by heart before I saw the previous episodes!

Eliza9917 · 03/01/2019 10:31

Yabu. Friends is shit. Soooo over-repeated. And over rated.

Lorddenning1 · 03/01/2019 10:35

OMG

DobbyLovesSocks · 03/01/2019 10:35

YANBU. Definitely need to watch them in order. I made this mistake with SATC. Watched it sporadically (my age means I only really watched last few seasons religiously) and when I got the box set for xmas one year I watched the whole series start to finish and realised I had missed so many themes. I hadn't realised for example how much of a flake Carrie is, bouncing from Mr Big to Aidan, back to Big and back to Aidan (breaking his heart twice in the process). I also now have the DVD set of Friends and there are extended scenes in most episodes (it's like watching them for the first time all over again)

GabsAlot · 03/01/2019 10:40

deinfitely watch them in order i watched them as they came on channel four orignally eagerly awaitng the next episode

i now watch random ones but i know them back to front-you cant watch them like that if u dont know whose who

BitOutOfPractice · 03/01/2019 10:42

Wronger than the Queen of Wrong on National Wrong Day. (I haven't written anything like that since Friends was originally airing!)

I think teens now just don't consume things the same way we did. My dd (15) is puzzled by how Luther is airing this week ie on consecutive nights

Ha ha ha mine is 13 too and discovered friends about 6 mths or so ago - she now has various clothing items, central perk on her door and a completely obsessive way of getting quotes into every day life. We had the same for a bit then she discovered she could record in order by series...then I found her a good second hand full series set wooo hoo - just have to put up with it on her laptop24/7 now.

BarbaraofSevillle · 03/01/2019 10:56

Oh, I hate random watching and DP does it all the time. It's The Simpsons, Futurama or the Big Bang Theory in our house.

The cartoon ones aren't so bad, because no-one ages and there isn't a timeline as such, but TBBT is all over the place and one minute someone is very new, then they've been around for ages, there's a load of in jokes, and the Blossom appears Grin.

I bought the DVD box set of seasons 1-7 from Music Magpie for a few quid but have only got part way through season 1, so need to get back on with it.
