Is anyone watching this Inbetweeners thing?

What a pile of crap! The programme was funny back in the day but this Jimmy Carr thing is absolutely dire. Also why do they keep embarrassing the women who were in the show? First Anthony Head’s daughter and then the woman who played Will’s mum with unfunny sexist jokes.

How are they going to get two hours out of this?

Cakemadeoffruit - you can get the book of the scripts, where one of the writers talks at the beginning of each episode about how they came to write it. I remember it saying they had yellow post-it notes with ideas on, and when they needed one more episode, they looked at what they had left, and it said, “French exchange kid”, “party”, “shit birthday”, or something like that!

cindersrella · 01/01/2019 23:31

I thought it was really funny.. apart from the histories bits.

Switched it off after 10 minutes, was too cringey and awkward and so far from funny. So disappointed!!

EdinaMonsoon · 01/01/2019 23:55

Agree that Jimmy Carr took what is a very funny awkward teen sitcom & turned it into a braying, misogynistic pile of crap. There was no chemistry between the actors but I wonder if that’s because they felt awkward that the so-called host had put such a sexist, bent out of shape spin on the show.

RedForShort · 02/01/2019 00:11

Anything that could have been good about was depleted by Jimmy Carr. He was terrible. There was one pony where he says something he evidently thought was funny to the American woman (last 'award') and the camera panned out to the four actors looking unamused.

Would have be far better without Jimmy Carr - Twitter agrees is seems.

Fullofregrets33 · 02/01/2019 09:52

So so awkward ward throughout. Such a shame because the inbetweeners is a brilliant programme. There was no chemistry between the boys, they were so quiet and toned down. There was just no point to any of it. Jimmy Carr worst choice ever. Why didn't Greg Davies do it?
So many great clips they could have shown and they kept showing the same ones on repeat? Why?
Who chose which guests to present the awards? What a weird selection.

To sum up a complete let down. Also feel sorry for the boys because it's a bit like Harry Potter etc, they don't seem to be able to find success in anything else out of the inbetweeners

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 02/01/2019 14:38

It was terrible. 4 teenagers acting like hormonal arseholes is funny because although they are sexist it shows them up for what they are.Trying to recreate that type of behaviour by fixating on the female actors vagina's etc was pathetic. Jimmy Carr was the usual waste of space, and there was no rapport between any of them. I'd agree that none of them are decent actors, Simon Bird is good in Friday Night Dinner but he's just playing Will in that and the only other one I've seen in anything is Blake - playing Pike in the Dads Army film - so just Neil in a uniform.
To be honest it's put me off wanting to watch any future Inbetweeners films/episodes that they might do. I didn't make it to the end, gave up after about 45 mins.

BlancheM · 02/01/2019 14:57

Oh it was so awkward and a bit random. It was a bit like 'what's all this in aid of?'- the show hasn't been on in ages, the films were a long time ago- and painful.

MsChookandtheelvesofFahFah · 02/01/2019 15:16

I wonder if they thought Emily Atack might get too much attention? Confused Agree with everyone else, so cringeworthy. Embarrassing for James Buckley, the writers saying he's like his character in real life and Greg Davies slagging Simon Bird off for about 5 minutes without stopping (who was desperately trying to keep a smile on his face and failing). The quiz partners, omg, the tattoo was AWFUL! Just desperate TV. A better idea would have been the characters reunion 10 years on (families, jobs, homes) and them revisiting old places and faces (Greg Davies, the parents, old flames etc)

BlueNeighbourhood · 02/01/2019 17:05

Well James has came out and apologised for it now, I do think a lot of people misbelieved that it was a new episode (I knew it wasn’t). Jimmy Carr was just the wrong person to host it, it should have been Greg Davies. Even as a Reunion show it could have been so good with clips and their favourite scenes to fill but Carr ruined it with that laugh and making it all about himself again. The boys looked like they’d rather be anywhere but there which is such a shame.

lardass88 · 02/01/2019 17:15

I watched it last night hoping it would get better but it was awful!

Zoflorabore · 02/01/2019 17:23

I also got the impression that there are 2 teams of friends in real life and that they don't like James Buckley very much.

My 15yr old ds loves it so I watched it with him last night and thought that Jimmy C was awful, he didn't know enough about the show to contribute anything that wasn't scripted.

It would be interesting to hear JB's take on it!

FoodieToo · 02/01/2019 17:29

One of my favourite programmes ever and was also SO disappointed. Was absolutely cringeworthy.
Could not believe the lack of rapport between the lads, the guy who plays Simon just looked so completely fed up it was embarrassing.
Thankfully there were a few episodes afterwards to cheer me up.....

BlueNeighbourhood · 02/01/2019 17:31

It appeared that every time the boys were talking about some sort of anecdote, Carr cut them off to either go into the audience or cut to these awards - the premise of the show was to catch up with the four leads and find out about their favourite part. When they were in the car and talking as four friends it was fun and we found out a lot more in that small segment than the rest of the show put together.

The fan quiz was cringe and the point I turned off, Joe seemed genuinely terrified of the guy he was paired up with and they all seemed perplexed by what was going on around them.

The worst part was the choice of studio guests. The biggest two you needed there was Charlotte and Carli, maybe Donovan too. The parents were nowhere to be seen other than Carr’s terrible jokes about Will’s Mum. I just don’t get it, it’s in no way James, Joe, Simon or Blake’s fault, it’s the producers who devised this and stuck their names to it and now they’re getting the flack for it.

SpinSpinSpin · 02/01/2019 17:36

We have this recorded to watch later in the week but think I'll just delete it. Thanks for the heads up.

Tartyflette · 02/01/2019 17:49

I was disgusted with Jimmy’s Carr disgusting and unfunny jokes to the women, (Carly, Will’s mum and Catherine Ryan) They were totally unacceptable. Vile man.
I really wanted to like the show but it was a pile of shit.

Cakemadeoffruit · 02/01/2019 17:50

Thanks chewing gum will look the scripts up.

NorthernFlowers · 02/01/2019 17:51

I thought the actor who played Mr Kennedy looked so embarrassed with the 'paedo' jokes.

Also what was the need of the joke about the girl who played Carli? Totally inappropriate given the whole point was that her character was way out of reach of any of the four lads so actually didn't 'pull' anything much at all.

Agree with PPs, Jimmy Carr misjudged this badly and didn't seem to have much background knowledge of the programme or characters.

ANiceLentilHotpot · 02/01/2019 18:02

Agree with what everyone has said, so disappointing and they all looked embarrassed to be there. Was horrible how the female actors were spoken to.

Jimmy Carr has a talent for ruining any potentially funny programme he presents. 8 out of 10 cats, Big Fat Quiz, etc. They all have really funny clever guests but they all end up being awkward and cringy (and far too long).

Theunreasonableone · 02/01/2019 18:29

I feel a bit sorry for James Buckley after seeing that tweet but at the same time he didn’t come across as very likeable on the programme last night.

OP posts:
BlancheM · 02/01/2019 18:40

I don't think James came across well either, the others put a brave face on it but I'm not surprised they were on the back foot because Jimmy Carr was laughing at them instead of with them and kept pointing out that they're 'not proper actors'. That could be a sore point as that's how they pay the bills.

shutlingsloe · 02/01/2019 19:28

So, so disappointing.

the only other one I've seen in anything is Blake - playing Pike in the Dads Army film - so just Neil in a uniform.

In his defence, he was good in ' A Very English Scandal'.

Pumperthepumper · 02/01/2019 19:36

Jimmy Carr is just such a tool. I can’t understand why he’s still on tv - and I’m a bit gutted because I think it would have been so much better with Greg Davies hosting. Jimmy Carr just fills me with rage, he’s a complete dick.

HelenaDove · 02/01/2019 20:00

Blake was also in Prime Suspect 1973.

TotesEmoshTerri · 02/01/2019 20:06

The whole show was a train wreck. Well look back on the Inbetweeners like we look back on Alf Garnett now. Almost every joke is about being gay or a "bender" very out of date even now
