To not understand why the 'Fat Controller' is still called the 'Fat Controller'?

It's cringeworthy, and, tbh, he's not even THAT fat? Wtf, how is this still OK these days??

Yeah and we should rename Mr Blobby too Hmm

feelingverylazytoday · 22/12/2018 19:54

Probably because the majority of the general public isn't quite as hypersensitive about the word 'fat' as people on mumsnet are.

Killerqueen2244 · 22/12/2018 19:55

Hahaha @HermoineWaslib most underrated comment of the night!! 😂

kayakingmum · 22/12/2018 19:55

Fat shouldn't be regarded as a negative necessarily. It should just be regarded as a distinguishing feature. The issue is with society that's regards thin as good, fat as bad.

In the same way I don't understand the fuss about Corbyn saying May was a stupid woman. It's strange that to describe someone as a woman is offensive, but not to describe someone as stupid. I don't get it.

WindyWednesday · 22/12/2018 19:58

It’s Henry who gets bricked up.

Fat controller as pp have said is because his is the controller of the broad gauge line.

As far as I know no one has been offended by this before. It’s a fictional character in a kids book. Rev Awdry possibly didn’t meant to offend.

The kids get it. It’s brilliant.

68Anon · 22/12/2018 19:59

Whats wrong with him being called the Fat Controller? It's an apt name, he is fat.

Fishcakey · 22/12/2018 20:01

Who actually cares?!

SneakyGremlinsBrokeTheSleigh · 22/12/2018 20:04

You have way too much time on your hands. He's fat. He's a controller. Ergo, the fat controller.

ParadiseLaundry · 22/12/2018 20:06

We've got some books published in 2017 and he's the Fat Controller in those.

GrinGrin at Fucking Troller!

BertieBotts · 22/12/2018 20:20

In newer things he's called Sir Topham Hat. They didn't remake all of the old episodes just to edit this out though.

JustABetterPlayer · 22/12/2018 20:37

It’s acceptable because it’s a silly name given to a fictional character in a story designed for toddlers and young children. He’s fat and the controller so I can see where the writers where coming from Confused

Dermymc · 22/12/2018 20:40

It's fine get over it.

FYI Thomas is called a tank engine because of the type of engine he is. The other engines are different types eg tender engines. This fact blew my mind.

Ladymargarethall · 22/12/2018 20:41

Or perhaps he controls fat.

Thurmanmurman · 22/12/2018 20:42

He’s fat as fuck and a controller. Say what you see😂

whymewhyme · 22/12/2018 20:45

Talk about PC!

Grimbles · 22/12/2018 20:45

He's definitely punching above his weight with Lady Hatt though Grin

thighofrelief · 22/12/2018 20:50

Had an exbf i renamed The Fat Controller.

YoungLennyGodber · 22/12/2018 20:51

I feel your pain PP!

Took DS to meet Thomas and Friends when he was two, and as soon as he spotted him he shouted ‘it’s the fucking troller!’ - audible gasps from other parents. Didn’t see us for dust. Never been so ashamed Blush

Gooseygoosey12345 · 22/12/2018 20:54

Well he's a big round ball with legs and a head and he controls the trains... fat controller seems pretty accurate to me

user1473878824 · 22/12/2018 20:55

Fucking hell...

umpteennamechanges · 22/12/2018 20:58

I have nothing to add to this thread other than that DM's nickname for DF is 'The Fat Controller' when he tries to 'assert authority' Grin

posthistoricmonsters · 22/12/2018 21:00

I had no idea the name was to do with track types.

It doesn't bother me. I mean, it's hardly Captain Pugwash is it 😂

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 22/12/2018 21:03

They'll be having him in vanity sizing next. Along with everyone else getting all offended because fat people mustn't be called fat.
(And I speak as someone who needs to drop two stone but at least accepts it and knows that I'm not a size 14 no matter what the recent ridiculous resizing of clothes tells me)

Craft1905 · 22/12/2018 21:06

The reason he isn't called The Fat Controller in America is because in America, he isn't fat, he's just average sized.

Missingstreetlife · 22/12/2018 21:19

Is fat a term of abuse or just descriptive. If it's rude to say the fat woman next door or my teacher is fat, why teach children to use it?
If not it's fine
