To wish people wouldn't be so negative about January

Had somebody already in work going on about how she's dreading January because it will be so boring and she'll have no money to go out and everyone will be off drink etc etc

I bought a magazine yesterday which was the January edition and it was full of dreary articles about diet and exercise.

AIBU to wish people would stop turning January into some kind of national month of sackcloth and ashes?

Yes, some people like to see the start of a new year as a time to make changes. But it's the general going on and on about it in a gloomy and negative way that really gets to me.

I hate January, the weather, taking down the tree, all the fun and excitement over!

fanfan18 · 19/12/2018 10:57

I can't wait for January! I feel like we get a bit of a fresh start. I know it's all cliche with new years resolutions etc but I genuinely love it.

Elfinablender · 19/12/2018 10:58

The only redeeming feature of January is that it's not February.

Believeitornot · 19/12/2018 10:58

Well for some it is hard - lack of money, taxes are due, christmas is over (which can be draining).

Why not be more sympathetic?

RayRayBidet · 19/12/2018 10:58

I hate January, it's freezing cold and summer is a long way off.
I live in Bavaria and the winter here is Arctic. It hurts your face and fingers. There is no Christmas to look forward to and warmer weather is ages away.
YABU

DayManChampionOfTheSun · 19/12/2018 11:00

I love January OP YADNBU! It feels like the world has been reset, my bday is very early in Jan too so I think that adds to the fresh start feeling. I get crap presents from the boxing day sale, often wrapped in left over chridtmas paper but I still love it!

Stormwhale · 19/12/2018 11:00

I'm not keen on the cold weather, but otherwise have nothing against January in particular. I am usually pleased to take down the Christmas decs as the clutter drives me mad.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 19/12/2018 11:01

Colder, poorer and fatter in January, whats to like?!

Homethroughthepuddles · 19/12/2018 11:01

YANBU. January isn't the most attractive month of the year, but people banging on and on about how dreary it is, oh please can everyone stop leaving chocolates in the canteen because they're trying to lose weight etc etc is a real downer.

I think a lot of it is the consequence of the ever lengthening build up to Christmas which results in this massive crash down to earth when it's all over.

LucheroTena · 19/12/2018 11:03

January weather wise is much more Christmassy than December - which is usually wet and mild. Let’s move Christmas to January.

CaptainHammer · 19/12/2018 11:04

Yanbu. January is my favourite month! My birthday, my favourite type of weather and a quiet time at work.

Dumbledoresgirl · 19/12/2018 11:05

The only redeeming feature of January is that it's not February.

Assuming you are in the northern hemisphere, that makes no sense to me. February is at least nearer to the warmer weather returning. It is also lighter and shorter. It contains half term, which I personally like. Itnis also the month I get a break from paying council tax and water rates, which is handy.

I cannot say anyone that about January, though I am not actually someone who moans about any month in particular.

Dumbledoresgirl · 19/12/2018 11:06

Grr auto correct. It should say I cannot say any of that about January.

CycleWoman · 19/12/2018 11:09

YANBU! I don’t get the negativity at all! Ok yes, we’re all skint, cold and bloated after Xmas but moaning about it isn’t going to change that.

Tbh people constantly complaining about how dark and cold winter is in general irks me a bit. Yes! It’s winter! It happens every year!

DustyMaiden · 19/12/2018 11:09

Love January, it’s as far away from Christmas as you can get.

Elfinablender · 19/12/2018 11:10

February is as cold and miserable as January, except by February you have already endured January. In January you have a sense of a new year and new hope, by February you realise that those resolutions are never going to happen. And the half term in February is the grimmest school holiday that there is.

PinkHeart5914 · 19/12/2018 11:11

January is a bit rubbish though, the excitement of Christmas is over and it’s a few months before you go on holiday and the weather is rubbish!

Littleraindrop15 · 19/12/2018 11:12

Love January!!

However I don't want 2018 to end it has been such a great year!

AnotherPidgey · 19/12/2018 11:14

I'd quite happily edit January and November out of the year (although will concede that this November was largely inoffensive and bordering into pleasant at times)

It is a bit of a hangover month after the busyness of December. The nights feel much darker after the Christmas lights have been boxed away. The long nights have peaked, but it's February before you notice much practical difference and the weather can be hard with sharp frosts/ winds, rain and dull days. Spring still feels a long way off other than the brave snowdrops.

There's not a huge amount to be excited about. No little waymarks like Bonfire Night or Valentines if that helps people through. Paydays can have a long gap if December's was brought forwards.

JudasPrudy · 19/12/2018 11:18

January is a bit pointless but I do like the fresh start and the we're all in it together feeling of being skint (at the minute I feel like the only skint person and everyone else on the planet have miraculously turned into Christmas millionaires)

The nicest time of year is Easter I think.

SushiMonster · 19/12/2018 11:25

Start of the ski season proper, and my birthday. January rocks.

ComtesseDeSpair · 19/12/2018 11:37

Start of the ski season and competitive running seasons - roll on January!

But yes, I can see a bit why some people might be a bit despondent if they’re going to be facing post-Christmas credit card bills and pressure to lose weight / stick to whatever NY Resolution they struggle with.

Homethroughthepuddles · 19/12/2018 11:39

"the excitement of Christmas is over and it’s a few months before you go on holiday"

Yes, but there are lots of nice things that can happen in life besides Christmas and your Summer holiday. It's not really a case of staggering from one to the other.

AnOtherNomdePlume · 19/12/2018 11:42

January is even longer than February.

Tbh I can't see the positive side of it.

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 19/12/2018 11:44

It is boring.

The hype from Christmas is dying down, it's the longest wait for payday and everywhere is just sales of the tat nobody wanted for Christmas.
