To wish people wouldn't be so negative about January

Had somebody already in work going on about how she's dreading January because it will be so boring and she'll have no money to go out and everyone will be off drink etc etc

I bought a magazine yesterday which was the January edition and it was full of dreary articles about diet and exercise.

AIBU to wish people would stop turning January into some kind of national month of sackcloth and ashes?

Yes, some people like to see the start of a new year as a time to make changes. But it's the general going on and on about it in a gloomy and negative way that really gets to me.

HBBB, they don't mean it literally.

DinosApple · 20/12/2018 10:11

January isn't terrible.

One of the DC has a birthday that month, so we try to make it special. Fortunately we occasionally get snow on the actual day which for a kid is just magical (but a nightmare for birthday parties...)

It's chilly, and dark, but the nights will be drawing out then which always makes me happy.

Also I'm on flower watch then. Looking for signs of the spring to come.

I Love January!

I like the sense of a new year and all the planning

AvonCallingBarksdale · 20/12/2018 13:18

DD’s birthday is in January so we’re always really careful not to do it down Grin

BirthdayKake · 20/12/2018 13:21

I normally hate January BUT...

I am hopefully turning 12 weeks pregnant on New Year's Day and I am absolutely desperate for my horrendous morning sickness to calm down! So really looking forward to January this time Smile

SecretWitch · 20/12/2018 13:24

January is fine. March is the worst, long, dreary, soggy...

darlingShelby · 20/12/2018 13:26

If people didn’t make such an irrational fuss over Christmas, then the rest of the year ( especially January) wouldn’t seem half so bad! Hmm

BirthdayKake · 20/12/2018 13:26

March can have some very warm days! The most unpredictable month of the year, I'd say

SecretWitch · 20/12/2018 13:26

Congratulations @BirthdayKake! A little one to look forward to in 2019!

Aww. Thanks @SecretWitch

My birthday is at the end of January. I always give up the booze. But, will be glad when we get it out of the way and get to February half term as we’re heading to Paris for a few days which I’m excited about, as we’re taking dds this time.

JassyRadlett · 20/12/2018 13:36

As someone with a January birthday, I totally agree. I grew up in Australia where January may be where you’re a bit short of cash after Christmas but it’s the summer holidays, hot, sunny and a public holiday at the end of the month.

Here everyone is determined to be miserable and have given up alcohol/sugar/fun for the month so no one is every willing to help you celebrate your birthday.

Fairyliz · 20/12/2018 13:37

Sorry but I hate January, its soo cold dark and so grey. Even if we have a rare sunny day when its crisp and cold with blue skies, its usually in the week so too late to enjoy by the time I get home.
Last year was horrendous with the cold snow and ice, struggling to work and to get anywhere. It just seems so long before we can have any nice weather.
To top it all its my birthday in January and I get some rubbish gifts and everyone is too skint after Christmas/ill/not drinking.

Bah humbug!

Lydiaatthebarre · 20/12/2018 14:14

Some people seem to see life as being about Christmas and Summer holidays with everything else being a pointless bridge between the two events.

It's a bit depressing that they can't live in the present, appreciate the different seasons, and find interesting things to do all year around.

But no doubt, as soon as Christmas is over there'll be people anticipating next Christmas and urging the year forward so they can start putting up the decorations again.

darlingShelby · 20/12/2018 16:19

Lydia
How true.
Those are exactly my sentiments.
I work in retail. A vast majority of customers are not looking that elated.
Something is broken.

Snugglepiggy · 20/12/2018 16:38

Totally agree Lydia. The older I get the more joy I get out of the little things on ordinary days.
The expectations around the festive season,New Years Eve and holidays makes me feel under pressure .Little treats often do it for me.A book and a soak in the bath ,finding a nice new cafe and treating myself to a coffee and a quiet lunch .I must be boring .And DH has done dry January for as long as I've known him and his snoring stops.so I get my best sleep.Like a hibernating hedhehog! All the seasons have something I enjoy tbh.

maddiemookins16mum · 20/12/2018 18:26

And don’t forget Call the Midwife starts.

drspouse · 20/12/2018 18:28

Now that's good news.

thewooster · 20/12/2018 18:40

I like January. Actually prefer it to December which is mainly hassle and expensive.

Ok it can be cold but it is winter, what can you expect. You need to have winter to appreciate the summer.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 20/12/2018 19:43

I cannot say I like January, but at least the whole Christmas thing is over and the days are getting longer, albeit very slowly! I just wish we could have snowy weather at Christmas rather than in Feb/March. I think we need to delete two months from our calendar for a year so we get back cold Decembers (rather like in 1714).

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 20/12/2018 19:44

Sorry - it was 1752!

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 20/12/2018 19:46

Lydia - you are right! What is this relentless Christmas thing nowadays? How can people wish the year away without enjoying each and every thing the seasons have to offer (October and November excepted!!)?
