To think parents are going mad

I've seen a few posts recently about parents naming their kids and some of the ideas are insane. Axl, Orange, Blossom. Whats with the trends of going for really out there names - whats wrong with traditional names? Am I the only one that thinks its getting more and more out there.

My sister named her daughter Rebecca in '98 and my Mum thought that was a 'new' name when everyone called her Becky.

People have always used “out there” names though havnt they? A close friend of mine was given no name in the late 70s and allowed to chose his own when he was older

I think that says more about your family than anything else, Becky has been a short for Rebecca for ages - Becky Sharp in Vanity Fair??

Don’t forget that a lot of people using these names aren’t British, and people can come across as right little Englanders when they start bitching.

Some modern names are great. Some traditional names are ghastly.

Acer is the most recent weird name I have heard.

Acer like a computer? Wonder if that's how the parents met

Well my 40 year old cousin is Becky short for Rebecca and has been Becky most of her life so not sure what your mum was getting at there...

Ha ha well I have a tree called an Acer/Japanese Maple so maybe they are gardeners?

I do a bit of genealogy and some old names are very out there.

I like unique name and called our Dd one. Yet to meet another one yet. My sister also has given her children unique names and it's great. It's like wishing for big personalities.
Plus by the time you think of everyone you went to school with, worked with and in my case are in congregations with - to many names have various connotations and tend to remind you of that person from school/work/congregation.
Why would I want to do that? Why not be unique.

Even worse are the traditional names with a very different spelling - eg instead of Isaac it's Eyezac. Or Ameelyah instead of Amelia.

Those kids have a lifetime ahead of spelling out their name each time someone goes to write it or seeing their individual name spelt wrong.

I'm waiting to hear of a Chantenay as in carrot.

Tyreek... half tyrone and half beleek two places in Ireland. No chance at all.of decoding the other name...

It's Asa I'd have thought. I know a few of them and don't think it's very unusual.

All names were made up at one point of another.

Some traditional names are not amazing, and there's a reason they aren't coming back, some modern names won't stand the test of time for the same reason.

Asa is quite an old fashioned name I thought.

Axel and variations thereof is a name...don’t see the issue.

What has really surprised me is that Web 2.0 style naming where you drop the vowels hasn't taken off, after the success of Flickr, Tumblr etc. I was expecting a host of little Json's, Rbrt'ss and Lcy's

Asa is a nickname for Alastair. It's not modern or weird.

Asa is a biblical name. It’s in the Old Testament.
