To think parents are going mad

I've seen a few posts recently about parents naming their kids and some of the ideas are insane. Axl, Orange, Blossom. Whats with the trends of going for really out there names - whats wrong with traditional names? Am I the only one that thinks its getting more and more out there.

My sister named her daughter Rebecca in '98 and my Mum thought that was a 'new' name when everyone called her Becky.

There’s a Dolphin at my Dd’s School...

Asa Hartford...football player (I had a bit of a crush on him in the 70s when he played for Manchester City)

Me too 😊

@ChrisPrattsFace

Needs to go further. Hey Hydn where's Hw?

Rudgie47 · 10/12/2018 22:18

Acer has been around for years.

TwigTheWonderKid · 10/12/2018 22:19

You do realise that all names are invented?

WilburforceRaven · 10/12/2018 22:19

Asa's a Biblical name.

4point2fleet · 10/12/2018 22:21

IWouldPreferNotTo I taught a Kci (Casey).

BabySharkAteMyHamster · 10/12/2018 22:21

Asa is spelt Asa.

Not Acer. Hmm

Orchiddingme · 10/12/2018 22:22

Axel is a fairly common name in Nordic/Germanic countries for boys, there's been Prince Axels and so forth. It's not an entirely made-up name, you are just not that well-traveled.

BabySharkAteMyHamster · 10/12/2018 22:23

It's also a biblical name.

Asais a givennamein several parts of the world. In English, the usual pronunciation is /ˈeɪsə/ or /ˈeɪzə/.Asa(אסא): derived from the Hebrew language, as thenameappears in the Old Testament to designate the third King of Judah, who reigned for forty years. ...Asa: Hebrew means healer and/or physician, Ase.

TheDowagerCuntess · 10/12/2018 22:24

I'm mid-40s and went to school with people (mostly girls) with all manner of names. Several of which I've never heard before or since.

What does it matter, really? It only affects the person with the name, and they can do something about it, if they feel particularly strongly. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hedgehogblues · 10/12/2018 22:25

Nothing wrong with traditional names but nothing wrong with non traditional names either. I don't understand why people get het up about this.

IWouldPreferNotTo · 10/12/2018 22:27

@TheDowagerCuntess

Because people do make snap judgements based on names and they do it all the way along including when looking at CVs.

A name combined with age gives a strong indication of social background and from that people will infer (correctly & incorrectly) certain things about that person.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 10/12/2018 22:28

When doing my family tree I came across

Dorcas (female)
Mercy (female)
Robina (female)
Most of the male names were the usual ones for their time though such as
John
James
William
George

etc

scrivette · 10/12/2018 22:28

Axel is a Hebrew name and is an old name.

What's not a good name to someone is a great name to someone else.

My children have very unusual names and I haven't met any others yet, however I don't judge people who give their children names from the top ten even if it's something I wouldn't do.

anniehm · 10/12/2018 22:28

To a certain extent it's up to parents but I do feel for kids with weird names - there were twins called Chardonnay and Shiraz at my kids former school, I cannot imagine the stick they get now!

ChristmasWrappingTheWaitresses · 10/12/2018 22:28

My grandmother was called Philadelphia. Born in 1902.

CheerfulYank · 10/12/2018 22:29

Asa is Old Testament but as an American is not the same as Acer at all. :)

I saw a viral thing not long ago where a mom canceled her baby shower because people were "talking shit" about the baby name she'd chosen.

It was Squire Sebastian Senator.

And that was just the first name. As in, she expected everyone to use that at all times.

ABitCrapper · 10/12/2018 22:29

You'll love some of the old Puritanical names Grin

This is one of my favourites "If-Christ-had-not-died-for-thee-thou-hadst-been-damned. Praise-God’s son, he made a name for himself as an economist. But, for some inexplicable reason, he decided to go by the name Nicolas Barbon."

UterusUterusGhali · 10/12/2018 22:29

Blossom Dearie was a jazz singer. Not at all modern.

To think parents are going mad
Sweepington · 10/12/2018 22:29

It’s up to them what they name their kids. My daughter’s name is very rare. It’s an old Russian Jewish name- I was quite surprised when I found out quite how rare it is. It doesn’t sound that unusual if that makes sense!

Dustbunny1900 · 10/12/2018 22:32

Thats Howe I feel about ppl who name their kids "Becky" and "chad". Maybe it's just in the US that those have both become the butt of jokes

C0untDucku1a · 10/12/2018 22:32

What’s wrong with blossom?!?! Great programme...

Elphie54 · 10/12/2018 22:36

I know someone who named her twins Heaven and Nevaeh. They a bullied constantly at school (which is wrong and no one should be bullied for their name). When she told everyone about the names she chose, many rolled their eyes and said why would you do that to your poor children? I agree. Her choice but not a choice I would have made.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 10/12/2018 22:37

I like issac but i dont like when people try to be creative with tis spelling its so annoying

Ooh what like spelling it correctly? Hmm
