How to enjoy tea without sugar?

LeroyIshy · 02/12/2018 20:38

I'm a tea drinker. 4/5 cups a day. That's 5 spoons of sugar a day and I'm trying to cut down. I'm not overweight but would like to be healthier.

AIBU to think that as someone who has had sugar in their tea for as long as I can remember, I'll never quite enjoy it as much without?

No sweetener I've ever tried seems to have done the trick!

Do you like green/white tea- they're disgusting with anything sweet added. Rooibos and oolong have a gentle sweetness to them as well.

pippop1317 · 02/12/2018 20:40

I warned myself off it. I use to have two spoonfuls. Then gradually reduced it until I have nothing. Not even a sweetener x

Purplelion · 02/12/2018 20:40

Have you tried it without? I’ve never had sugar in tea and on the odd occasion I’ve tries it I find it awful!

Worieddd · 02/12/2018 20:41

I cut down to half a spoon and now have just a quarter spoon of sugar in my tea. I can’t stand any more. Try it

overmydeadbody · 02/12/2018 20:41

It's just a case of persevering, it took me about four months to enjoy a cup of tea once I gave up sugar.

Believeitornot · 02/12/2018 20:41

I just stopped having sugar in my tea. Got used to it quickly!

CanIGoToBedNow · 02/12/2018 20:42

I’ve never had sugar in my tea and I bloody love it - tea tea tea all day with the tea love it

SinisterClownWatchingYou · 02/12/2018 20:42

Wean by a quarter spoon at a time?

LeroyIshy · 02/12/2018 20:42

I've tried it and really don't enjoy it. Maybe the weaning off is a good idea! I love tea with sugar. Wish my mum never gave it to me as a kid!

Go cold turkey.
Seriously, it's the only way.

I did that with coffee as I had to (no sugar at work) and now can't stand sweet coffee.

Your taste buds just need to get used to it.

Sitranced · 02/12/2018 20:42

Try real whole leaf tea with filtered water. Dusty teabags with water straight from the tap needs sugar to make it taste nice.

lifecouldbeadream · 02/12/2018 20:43

I used to be 2 sugars, now take none and wouldn’t thank you if you stirred my tea with a spoon that had been in your sugary tea... so you definitely can get used to and enjoy it!

MartaHallard · 02/12/2018 20:43

Try gradually reducing the amount of sugar you put in each cup, rather than stopping all at once, so that you gradually adjust to the new taste.

I used to take sugar in tea, then I stopped, and when someone by mistake put sugar in a cup of tea for me, I found it undrinkable. So don't worry that you won't enjoy tea without sugar.

VisitorsEntrance · 02/12/2018 20:44

I used to have sugar in tea.
I just went cold turkey. It tasted dreadful for about 5 days but after that it was fine.

Shesellsseashellsontheseashore · 02/12/2018 20:44

Just gradually reduced it. I can now drink it without but usually put a small bit in, about a quarter of a teaspoon. My old 1 sugar is ridiculously sweet now .

thekingfisher · 02/12/2018 20:44

Try xylitol - a really good 'healthy' natural sweetner
I now have ¼ teaspoon

Seniorcitizen1 · 02/12/2018 20:45

Not possible with India tea, far too bitter for me so stopped drinking it 45+ years ago. Now drink jasmine tea no sugar but slice of lime.

Hushnownobodycares · 02/12/2018 20:45

I dispensed with having two spoons in every cup years back. Cut it down by half a spoon a time over two or three weeks and have never looked back. Do it gradually and you won't notice it.

cariadlet · 02/12/2018 20:49

Go cold turkey.

I always had a spoon of sugar in my tea. Decided to save my sugar for better treats. Sugarless tea tasted awful for the first couple of months but then I got used to it and now really enjoy it (and have for years).

I've still got a really sweet tooth (love biscuits, cake and chocolate), but if I accidentally pick up the wrong drink and have a sip of tea with sugar it tastes absolutely disgusting.

Neverender · 02/12/2018 20:50

It sounds really flippant but just chuck the sugar in the bin. Then you can't have tea with sugar in it. It probably took 2 weeks for me to get used to it but now I can't drink 'sticky' tea!

LeroyIshy · 02/12/2018 20:51

@Neverender DH would have a fit 🤣

I agree with the gradually reducing it. I have sugar ( 1/2 teaspoon) in my first tea of the day and occasionally in the last. Grew up having two, didn’t have any for years and then started again after a period living with my grandparents as they just always make it with sugar.

You also need to find a tea that you like without. For me it’s Clipper or Yorkshire tea. Tetleys and PG tips are really bitter so I have stevia in them.

itbemay · 02/12/2018 20:52

I switched from sugar to sweetener and hated it at first but not as much as no sugar at all. I got used to it in the end!

HippoEvans · 02/12/2018 20:53

I think you’ll used to drinking tea without sugar over a period of time

LeroyIshy · 02/12/2018 20:53

Oh you have all thrown me off now. Gradually reduce? Cold turkey? I just don't know! This is so tough. Flowers for me 🙈
