How to enjoy tea without sugar?

LeroyIshy · 02/12/2018 20:38

I'm a tea drinker. 4/5 cups a day. That's 5 spoons of sugar a day and I'm trying to cut down. I'm not overweight but would like to be healthier.

AIBU to think that as someone who has had sugar in their tea for as long as I can remember, I'll never quite enjoy it as much without?

No sweetener I've ever tried seems to have done the trick!

I have two sugars in my tea, and have one or two cups a day. I've tried going cold turkey and gradual weaning, but the longest I've lasted on unsweetened tea is a month or so. I always go back to two sugars. It's so nice!! If I want to cut down I switch to coffee instead. I've never taken coffee with sugar. Tea without sugar in just doesn't do it for me - I'd rather have no tea than unsweetened tea!!

Lemon and ginger tea is nice though....!

have a chocolate digestive with it the tea is so much better

dontticklethetoad · 02/12/2018 21:33

I had GD so had to cut out my half a spoon completely.
The way I looked at it was that it wasn't actually disgusting without sugar, just not as nice. I just kept drinking it and eventually stopped noticing it.
Now if I get given tea with sugar, it turns my stomach.

missionofmercy · 02/12/2018 21:38

It is just a process.

I gave up sugar for Lent (the period 40 days before Easter), and although I don't subscribe to Religion it was a focus.

Now I could not stomach tea or coffee with sugar, and most desserts are just meh to me now.

Take your time and try it day by day. Tea and coffee tastes SOOOOO much better without sugar. Believe me, tea aholic here!

Best of luck. It can be done.

Ohyesiam · 02/12/2018 21:40

I too have up sugar for lent( I was at convent school at the time, and very holy!).
On Easter morning I made myself a cup of tea with sugar init, and it was DISGUSTING.

ThursdayLastWeek · 02/12/2018 21:47

Personally I hate tea without sugar. Whenever I try to have it without sugar I end up not ever finishing a cup.

In your shoes I would continue to have sugar, but cut down on cups of normal tea. Replace others with fruit or herbal tea. Horrible to ruin something you enjoy.

missionofmercy · 02/12/2018 22:04

The irony is, that most of us absolutely LOVED sugar in tea/coffee also.

But when it is gone, the alternative (sugar in the drinks) is just so awful.

Taste changes. I will never go back ever. OP try to cut it down or just go for it tomorrow.

Takes a little while to get used to it, but you can actually taste the tea/coffee sugar free. REALLY!

AuntieFesterAdams · 03/12/2018 02:14

I eased off- used to have 2 sugars, went to 1.5, then 1....

Now I can taste tea which has been stirred with a spoon that has been used to stir sugary tea and it is disgusting. Tea tastes soooo much better without.

LuthersCoat · 03/12/2018 02:19

Cold turkey...I had sugar in tea for 20 years! But no more (unless I want a pick-me-up!).

I also found sometimes drinking Earl Grey helped, as sugar tastes horrible in it.

I agree with having decent teabags like Yorkshire tea. And perhaps adding more milk than you would normally have. Good luck!

nocoolnamesleft · 03/12/2018 02:21

Reduce gradually. Worked for me. Got from 3 spoons to none.

Threeminis · 03/12/2018 02:51

Go cold turkey.. give it two weeks. You won't look back

brizzledrizzle · 03/12/2018 03:01

Add more milk, it makes it taste less bitter.

GivingBloodFeelingGreat · 03/12/2018 03:45

Tea without sugar or sweeteners is vile.

I either have 2 sugars or 3 sweeteners and 1 sugar.

Rachelle3211 · 03/12/2018 03:56

I used Stevia. It's still sweet but your blood sugar isn't spiking.

Blondielongie · 03/12/2018 04:05

I used to have 2 sugars in my tea. I stopped about 7 years ago. I remember loving tea with sugar. But now its repulsive to have sweet tea. I enjoyed tea more with sugar, but now I am so used to without I can't have it now iyswim.

Teachtolive · 03/12/2018 04:28

I was exactly the same as you, 2 sugars in my tea since I was a child and, as an adult, upwards of 4 cups per day. I just stopped. I allow myself coffee with sugar but very rarely with tea. I actually did a few Lenten fasts of sugarless tea and went back on every Easter Sunday but I started thinking about my teeth and my general health and just went cold turkey. Funny thing is, while 95% of the time I won't have sugar, if I'm feeling a bit down sometimes I'll have one cup with sugar. I like it but oddly it tastes wrong!

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 03/12/2018 07:56

I drank tea with sugar in until I was in my early 40s. A new partner persuaded me to give it up - I thought I’d never get used to it and it took me over year - but now I could never drink it with sugar in. You will get used to it.

Put the 5 spoonfuls in a jar, that's your 'tea sugar' only use it from the jar. Tomorrow put your 5 spoons in then take half a teaspoon out, you won't notice the difference.

Do this every day until you are not taking any sugar.

Alfie190 · 03/12/2018 08:06

I weaned myself off sugar when I was about 45. DH helped, he usually makes tea, I hardly ever. I told him that, without announcing it at the time, he should at some point start reducing my sugar. A few months later he informed me I was sugar free.
