Am getting a cold Sad Started with a bit of an odd throat yesterday and today am starting to feel blocked up and groggy.

I have lots on this weekend so could do with getting rid ASAP.

What’s the best tried and tested method you have for shifting a cold? Thanks!

lots and lots of spice!!

Thecatsatemychristmastree · 27/11/2018 10:27

A hot bath or shower with Mint and Tea Tree shower gel, cleared my nose and sinuses out and eased my headache a bit as well. Smile

SilkenTofu · 27/11/2018 10:28

Just before bed heat some milk and then pour a big shot of either whiskey or brandy in. Works for us.

Dancer12345 · 27/11/2018 11:05

Mmm love spicey food! A bath sounds lovely too.

I don’t like either milk, brandy, or whiskey, so not sure that will help! Wish I did as I’ve heard others say that helps.

Hot curry, hot bath, strong OTC painkillers like Solpadeine and loads of Vicks.

Perfectpanda11 · 27/11/2018 11:26

Ginger and turmeric in a hot drink.

NorthEndGal · 27/11/2018 11:27

Cold syrup - maple syrup, ginger, lemon, chillies and turmeric, simmer and sip

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 27/11/2018 11:29

a spicy soup, vicks on the feet with socks, honey/lemon/orange squash drink and two day nurse tablets.

abigailsnan · 27/11/2018 11:31

Any spicy food and loads of fresh oranges do it for me.

Wordthe · 27/11/2018 11:31

Neti pot😊

Dancer12345 · 27/11/2018 11:45

Ooh lots of great suggestions. Never tried the Vicks on your feet but have heard it’s really good, so will try that.

What’s turmeric like in a hot drink?! Doesn’t sound that tasty!

Definitely going to have a hot curry for dinner tonight. Then a bath.

Is the Neti pot the thing you use to fish sinuses out with @Wordthe?

Bloomini · 27/11/2018 11:51

Grated ginger, garlic, fresh lemon juice and honey in a mug topped up with boiling water and drink it as hot as you can bear it. Job done.

Wordthe · 27/11/2018 11:53

Yes the neti pot is used with warm salt water to rinse your sinuses
it may feel like a weird thing to do it first but I find it pleasant to use and it really does help to get all that horrible gunk out
I have a very heavy cold at the moment and I'm using it👍

Dancer12345 · 27/11/2018 12:06

Obviously I meant flush sinuses as opposed to fish!!!

Merryoldgoat · 27/11/2018 12:22

Definitely neti pot too.

BogstandardBelle · 27/11/2018 12:53

Time. Honestly, everything else just relieves the symptoms so that you can carry on until your immune system deals with it.

Paracetamol. Vicks for a blocked Plenty of fluids and rest.

OhMrTumnus · 27/11/2018 12:57

First Defence! I swear by it as do all my doctor friends. As soon as I get a hint of a cold, I use it.

Also, eat and drink well - oranges, lots of fish and veg.

Wordthe · 27/11/2018 12:57

Relieving the symptoms is important for comfort and general well being
It is important to blow your nose / cough to get all the gunk out
so long as you don't do it in a way that is counterproductive

UpstartCrow · 27/11/2018 12:57

Another vote here for a netti pot, which is what the other remedies try to do anyway. Its a bit daunting at first, but I just got through a 4 day cold with just some minor symptoms.
The cold virus lives in your nose and you produce mucus to try to shift it.
I cant stand being blocked up and trying to blow my nose, it makes my eyes water just to think of it.

Dowser · 27/11/2018 12:59

Some people swear by colloidal silver but you need to drink a lot of it so best to brew your own as it would be too expensive

My go to is raw garlic bulb and white onion whizzed in blender then add
Jar of organic honey
One peeled lemon

A dessert spoon every hour

LifesABeachCoaster · 27/11/2018 12:59

Vitamin C tablets, orange juice and ibuprofen. never fails

CoffeeandChocolateplease · 27/11/2018 13:03

Lots of fluids - I rotate between a cold drink, honey and lemon with hot water, and coffee. Take a zinc tablet every day. Rest as much as possible.

I had a cold last week but it only really lasted 3 days in the end, the above almost always makes it shorter for me. I am lucky in that I work from home though, so can rest and organise drinks more easily if need be.

lottielottielottie · 27/11/2018 13:05

Take probiotics daily. Been taking them for 18 month & had 1 mild cold. I get public transport daily & work in an office so I'm constantly surrounded by people coughing with colds etc.

Your immune system improves greatly once gut health is improved.

It's not a remedy, but a preventative measure. I was sick to death of getting constant colds, sore throats & other viruses so I did my own research & read up about probiotics. Not looked back since 👍🏻

halfwitpicker · 27/11/2018 13:05

14 hours sleep and hot fluid.
