Title says it all really. What book or books have you absolutely hated and why?

OP posts:
AamdC · 25/11/2018 18:46

50 shades was pretty crap tbh i couldnt ger through it, i generallycant read books if im bored by them.

FingerLickingGod · 25/11/2018 18:46

Fifty Shades. I couldn’t finish it, it was just awful.

PhannyMcNee · 25/11/2018 18:46

The Goldfinch. Everyone raves about it and I stuck with it believing it would get better!

AamdC · 25/11/2018 18:47

Cross post FingerGrin

Asthenia · 25/11/2018 18:47

Eleanor Oliphant. Utterly dreadful, unbelievable and I have no idea why it’s so popular. Also The Goldfinch. Pile of relentless, self-indulgent drivel.

Moominfan · 25/11/2018 18:47

Twighlight was pretty awful didn't get to the end.

And agree that 50shades is horrific but in its defence, people who never read suddenly picked up a book albeit a terrible one.

echt · 25/11/2018 18:48

The Da Vinci Code was pretty dire, and The Book Thief was tiresome, overlong and massively overrated.

MimsyBorogroves · 25/11/2018 18:49

The Lovely Bones. One of the only books I've never finished. I even finished bastard Fifty Shades!

Ridingthegravytrain · 25/11/2018 18:49

The alchemist

Annandale · 25/11/2018 18:49

My little blue dress. Supposed to be a satire but I think that was his publisher's idea when the author produced a pile of kack.

Augusta2012 · 25/11/2018 18:50

Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter. Awful sick book which should never have been written. Took me months to get it out of my head and the graphic torture and violence.

Shirleyphallus · 25/11/2018 18:50

Eat Pray Love

And One Day

Both an absolute pile of shite

AamdC · 25/11/2018 18:50

Oh yes the da. Vinci code i had forgotton that one and anotherone by Dan Brown they were both dire imo.

MrsDylanBlue · 25/11/2018 18:50

Apple Tree Yard.

Monster Love.

Graphic descriptions of child abuse apropos of nothing.

Threehoursfromhome · 25/11/2018 18:54

Probably something by Victoria Holt, in terms of books I have read and finished. I kept waiting for something to happen and it never did.

I also disliked the Bourne identity book which was nothing like the film. Bourne hits the heroine fairly early on, and later she says it's fine. I stopped there. Can't really be arsed with another spy-type who hits women and is excused by the narrative; Bond was enough.

sleepyhead · 25/11/2018 18:54

Tommy's Tale by Alan Cumming.

I don't blame him, I'm sure he tried hard and enjoyed writing it, but what was the publisher thinking accepting it for print???

The most almighty pile of self-indulgent shite.

Moominfan · 25/11/2018 18:54

Yes the alchemist! Had sooo much hype. Was really predicatable

AamdC · 25/11/2018 18:55

I generaly like Marian keyes for easy reading but a couple of her books have been really off i did read she suffers badly with depresssion though

runningtogetskinny · 25/11/2018 18:56

Housewife in the North, set in Northumberland where I worked at the time, thought it would be light hearted entertainment. Threw the fucking thing under the bed in fury, what a pathetic moaning character!!

WhipItGood · 25/11/2018 18:56

More than one Blush

The Life of Pi. Rambling and long.

I also struggle with anything written in the present tense so Wolf Hall was hard going. Most people said they loved it though so probably just me.

The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Just too much.
