Title says it all really. What book or books have you absolutely hated and why?

OP posts:
Petalflowers · 25/11/2018 19:10

Captain Corelli Mandolin
life of pi
Harry Potter

Books I started but couldn’t finish

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/11/2018 19:11

The Slap, horrid, nasty book.

Greensleeves · 25/11/2018 19:11

Oh yeah, The Slap was awful.

Buteo · 25/11/2018 19:13

Shantaram - couldn’t get past the first chapter.

How To Be A Woman - just no.

Cloud Atlas - kept waiting for a big reveal to tie it all together. It never came.

The Goldfinch - again couldn’t get past the first couple of chapters.

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/11/2018 19:13

I made the mistake of reading another of his books, "Barracuda", awful.
I get the feeling the author is a truly revolting man.

nancy75 · 25/11/2018 19:14

Most of those blockbusters that everyone in the beach is reading
The DaVinci code, girl in the train, 50 shades. My most hated are by some woman who’s name I can’t remember, she’s written loads and they are all so formulaic, they have a kind of moral dilemma ( it’s annoying me that I can’t think of her name!)

otterturk · 25/11/2018 19:14

@grumpy4squash WHAAAAATTTTT??!!!? That's my favourite book of all time!!

JacquesHammer · 25/11/2018 19:15

The Time Traveller’s Wife - just awful

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/11/2018 19:15

Also, that bloody stupid monkey sister thing.
A whole book where you feel like you are in a boring, worthy, animal rights lecture where nothing really happens.

Rinoachicken · 25/11/2018 19:16

The Dome (Stephen King)

Spartacunt · 25/11/2018 19:17

I agree with so many of these - especially Girl On A Train, Lovely Bones and The Essex Serpent. (But not The Goldfinch). Currently I'm reading Map of Days - the latest in the Peculiar series - and it is so disappointing. I'm angry! But will finish it so I can be legitimately furious.

Nettletheelf · 25/11/2018 19:17

If you want a crap book, trot on down to Asda and pick any one of the Christmas themed ‘girly story’ books. They will be called, “Breakfast at the little Christmas cafe” or “Snowflakes and cupcakes” or some other bollocks.

I read one by mistake a couple of years ago. Can’t even remember the title, but heroine got a job at a run down department store she used to visit with her now divorced parents and discovered a stock room full of pristine vintage stuff, which she secretly made window displays of overnight, thus turning around the store’s fortunes. Christ, it was crap.

Also, I read a terrible book called ‘I heart new York’ or Paris or something. I’m sure that reading it made me stupider, it was that bad.

TBDO · 25/11/2018 19:17

Another vote for One Day. Can’t understand how anyone could read the entire thing.

Greensleeves · 25/11/2018 19:18

yy One Day, I finished it but it was like root canal Hmm

Annandale · 25/11/2018 19:19

That's Jodi picoult Nancy - immediate recognition. I quite enjoyed the first one I read but the second was like a photocopy.

user1471521128 · 25/11/2018 19:20

The Man in the High Castle. The series looked excellent but I have a rule that if there's a program/film based on a book that I have to read the book first.

It was pants. Nothing happens.

Might still give the book a go.

happypoobum · 25/11/2018 19:20

Me Before You

nancy75 · 25/11/2018 19:20

I think Ive read a lot of these, but all the rubbish books just blur in to one & I can’t remember what I have & haven’t read

littlebillie · 25/11/2018 19:21

50 shades it's a mills and boon but a bit racier

nancy75 · 25/11/2018 19:22

Annandale yes that’s her! I read one & at some point I read a second, Midway through I was actually confused and thought I had read it before but it was a different book!

DerelictWreck · 25/11/2018 19:22

Poisonwood Bible. SNORE

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - writer was way overthinking as they wrote

The Sellout - how that won a Man Booker I'll never know

madeyemoodysmum · 25/11/2018 19:23

50 shades of poo

BishopstonFaffing · 25/11/2018 19:23

The Slap. I burnt it on the fire. And I love books.

One Day was also shite. Dice Man also shite. Agree with any cupcake cafe of schlock type book.

But I actually enjoyed the Goldfinch...

Glowerglass · 25/11/2018 19:24

A Little Life - just awful
Little Drummer Girl - (any LeCarre actually)
anything by Kate Mosse

user1471521128 · 25/11/2018 19:25

*series. Might still give the series a go.
