Have the marketing team never watched The Apprentice?

You're fired.

John Lewis sell practically everything except animals.

I can't stand Elton John though.

thisshitgotreal · 15/11/2018 07:09

They've run out of ideas haven't they?

Team orangutan all the way

Antigon · 15/11/2018 07:09

Meh. People are fickle, those saying they hate it will be saying they love it in a few weeks time.

EnidAlexandraRollins · 15/11/2018 07:10

If you search "piano" on their website there are a fair number in the search results.

Antigon · 15/11/2018 07:10

I do agree the Iceland Orangutan ad is much better, and heartbreaking.

Blanchedupetitpois · 15/11/2018 07:11

Also... the advert isn’t advertising pianos 🙄🙄🙄

AgathaRaisinDetra · 15/11/2018 09:40

Ahhh you're right. The advert is selling Elton John.

I didn't know John Lewis sold Elton John.

OP posts:
Antigon · 15/11/2018 11:35

They're not selling Elton John.

They're saying some gifts are so special that they are treasured forever (and it shows Elton still has the same piano he was given as a Christmas gift when he was a child).

AgathaRaisinDetra · 15/11/2018 12:51

How do we know it's the same piano?

OP posts:
Antigon · 15/11/2018 13:16

We don't - it's an ad. On TV.

Kewqueue · 15/11/2018 13:18

They're saying some gifts are so special that they are treasured forever
This. It's not complicated!

PointlessUsername · 15/11/2018 13:19

I thought the Advert was just showing had Elton not got that piano as a boy for Christmas then he may not be where he is today?

Sparklingbrook · 15/11/2018 13:24

John Lewis do sell pianos.

But it's not the point of the advert.

Celebelly · 15/11/2018 13:28

There we go. No need to break the bank.

Whynotnowbaby · 15/11/2018 13:29

They may sell pianos but it isn’t a product anyone would associate with them (although it has probably increased awareness that they do sell them!) The advert didn’t do it for me, I don’t mind Elton but it didn’t feel either Christmassy or particularly feelgood.

Blanchedupetitpois · 15/11/2018 13:31

I’m a bit embarrassed for the people who don’t get it Blush

DerRosenkavelier · 15/11/2018 13:33

I shed a tear. But I am a wuss. And I love Elton John’s music. And John Lewis. < MOR emoticon >

steff13 · 15/11/2018 13:35

I think it's a really sweet ad.

RoseGoldEagle · 15/11/2018 13:36

The OP is joking!! I love the ad though!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/11/2018 13:39

They could have achieved the same message with something far more relatable than a piano - a teddy bear, for example - various scenes showing the bear being given to a baby, taken to cub camp, sitting on a shelf above the table while child revises for GCSEs, being put on the pillow in University hall of residence, etc etc.

Sparklingbrook · 15/11/2018 13:41

But the piano turned out to be EJ's career.

twelv · 15/11/2018 13:41

The ad is talking about gifts that change your life.

Not gifts you keep forever etc etc

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/11/2018 13:53

Well - I have to say that wasn't obvious to me - and I don't think I am particularly dim.

And, being honest, how many of the Christmas presents we will buy this Christmas will be ones that will change someone's life/form the basis of their future stellar career, and how many will be nice things they will enjoy having and will give them pleasure? I think that the vast majority, if not all the presents I buy this year, will be in the latter catagory, not the former.

But, in the end, it is just an advert - some people will like it, and others won't like it or won't get it - and I will still be shopping at JL - so no sense my fretting about it!

MarshaBradyo · 15/11/2018 13:56

Preferrred orangutan by far

But it’s nice as a concept I just can’t warm to EJ
