Have the marketing team never watched The Apprentice?

You're fired.

The Last Leg are talking about this!!

The point of the advert is to stop us buying any presents other than pianos.

Sandsnake · 16/11/2018 22:42

I like it

WhereHaveTheyGone12 · 16/11/2018 22:42

Just thought I would share this excellent Lidl tweet which has caused me much amusement this evening. I have no life

‘It’s a Lidl bit funny’ Grin

I didn't know John Lewis sold pianos
notacooldad · 16/11/2018 22:43

How do we know it's the same piano?
It's not a biography! It's a story!

BadgerWithRice · 16/11/2018 22:45

This is the first John Lewis Ad I have liked. All the others were twee or bizarre attempts to pull on my heart strings but I really get the message on this one.

It’s not about buying lots of tat just because it’s Christmas, it’s about giving something that means something to someone and could make their life better.

LizzieBennettDarcy · 16/11/2018 22:45

Seems a bit weird when he didn't speak to his mother for years.

I've loved the ones before but this feels like an EJ advert rather than JL even though I appreciate the sentiment behind it.

It's a bit of a let-down, but they couldn't keep up the standard forever.

BadgerWithRice · 16/11/2018 22:47

Lidl’s marketing team really are exceptional though Smile

bringbackthestripes · 16/11/2018 22:47

I get the sentiment I just thought it was a bit odd being as he fell out with his mum for so many years.

BollocksToBrexit · 16/11/2018 22:48

I loved it. It made me cry.

PrincessScarlett · 16/11/2018 22:51

Apparently John Lewis have only just started selling pianos.

They don't sell Elton John but Elton John does have a film coming out next year an a tour. Nice advert for him.

AgathaRaisinDetra · 16/11/2018 22:56

I've bought my son an axe in the hope that he grows up to be an axe mur....

Oh.

OP posts:
Caspiana · 16/11/2018 22:57

I like the sentiment but it just isn’t very Christmassy. No Christmas at all till the last few seconds.

Also wasn’t Your Song used in a JL ad only a few years ago?

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 16/11/2018 22:57

John Lewis responded to the Lidl tweet; because they offer a cheaper organ than Lidl do.

Best thing to come out of this; I think!

VodkaRevelation · 16/11/2018 23:44

Well - I have to say that wasn't obvious to me - and I don't think I am particularly dim.

How is it not obvious what the ad is about? It’s spelled out in the tag line at the end.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 16/11/2018 23:53

Thanks, @VodkaRevelation - that makes me feel so much better.

LittleBearPad · 17/11/2018 00:02

They could have achieved the same message with something far more relatable than a piano - a teddy bear, for example

Not sure a teddy bear would have made him an international star and multi-millionaire...

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 17/11/2018 00:07

Well - we inherited a piano, and none of my dses show any signs of becoming pop stars - does the JL one come with a guarantee - if your child doesn’t become a multimillionaire singing sensation, you get your money back, and a free cup of coffee?

Rachelover40 · 17/11/2018 00:09

Hee hee, I just googled 'John Lewis - musical instruments' and they do sell some! Just not like the TV advert (maybe they did back in the day), you'll have a laugh if you look.

It's a lovely advert though. I well up every time it comes on TV. Love the Elton.

Myshinynewname · 17/11/2018 00:17

Whether you enjoyed the advert or not you’re all talking about it, John Lewis and Elton John. Lidl are tweeting about it. From an advertising perspective it’s worked.

Takemetothehole · 17/11/2018 00:23

@LittleBearPad I absolutely love the advert I've watched it a few times now. But I do agree with you, I think maybe they could have shown a child, for example getting a toy first aid kit and becoming a nurse/Dr/paramedic.

It could have been a bit more relatable.

Takemetothehole · 17/11/2018 00:24

Sorry I see you were quoting @SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius
