Is this for real (gender ID related)?

My DS (16) told me about this. It's got to be tongue in cheek, surely? Even if it isn't, it's hilarious/unbelievable/scary/pathetic (can't work out what to call it

😂😂😂😂

Blanchedupetitpois · 09/11/2018 08:29

It’s just a glossary of terms that may or may not be used by certain people to describe themselves. What’s scary about it?! Fine if it doesn’t reflect your own experiences at all, but don’t you think your reaction is a bit OTT and dramatic?

HavelockVetinari · 09/11/2018 08:31

That's genuinely hilarious! Grin

Such navel-gazing, millennial shite!

PtangyangkipperbangOi · 09/11/2018 08:32

It is absolutely ridiculous. the whole gender thing has gone way to far and is a bit barmy. I'm so glad I do not buy into this codswallop.

Wellthatsit · 09/11/2018 08:33

No, not OTT or dramatic. I think it's funny. Scary in the sense that people take this crap seriously. One definition says it's 100% one gender with a bit of another gender in top. I mean, come on! We can't give this way of thinking any creedance. It's ridiculous. I know I sound like an old fart, but "what's the world coming to??"

Wellthatsit · 09/11/2018 08:34

Fortunately, my DS (16) also thinks it's hilarious/ridiculous. Good lad.

TwiceMagic · 09/11/2018 08:35

Caelgender: a gender which shares qualities with outer space or has the aesthetic of space, stars, nebulas, etc. 😂

BarbarianMum · 09/11/2018 08:41

What.a.crock.of.self-indulgent.shite. Smile

BeyondVicious · 09/11/2018 08:43

NAMillenialsALT!!

drivingmisspotty · 09/11/2018 08:44

See (if this is for real) that caelgender I can see someone might be really into space, or feel somehow connected to space / a citizen of the universe. But how is it a gender? And why do they feel the need to identify it as a gender? Surely space itself is genderless. As well as not having a race, a religion, an ethnicity etc

It does sound so tongue in cheek. But I wouldn’t want to rubbish an identity that someone actually does hold dear.

Blanchedupetitpois · 09/11/2018 08:47

How many people do you really know who take this stuff seriously though? Tumblr is a site used almost entirely by teenagers, most of whom are trying to figure out who they are and what their lives are going to look like. You stumble across one tumblr page with a glossary saying ‘hey, whatever you want to be you’re welcome here!’ and you take it as a sign the world is going to hell in a handbasket. Don’t you think that is a little bit OTT? We’ve had people like David Bowie claiming to be androgynous spacemen since the seventies, and everyone was happy to accept it as artistic licence and let him get on with it. But some teenagers make a tumblr page about experimental gender definitions and suddenly it’s ‘scary’ 🙄🙄🙄

BruceAndNosh · 09/11/2018 08:51

The very first definition was enough for me.
Written by people with too much time on their hands

Wellthatsit · 09/11/2018 08:52

Agree that surely space has no gender. On a slightly more serious note, though, I think our fear of upsetting people who hold their (ridiculous) views on identity dear is getting out of hand. Let people have quirky ideas about themselves, pick their own rules of life etc etc, but creating never ending categories for eople to fit into, that everyone has to acknowledge, is bonkers and is making everyone far too precious for their own good. 'robot' gender FGS

Wellthatsit · 09/11/2018 08:58

I think a lot of kids do take it seriously. But they may well grow out of it (let's hope so). However, I think the authorities (schools, goverments) are jumping on the bandwagon, and that's where it get tricky.
David Bowie was different. He was creating an alter ego, playing with stereotypes and making an artistic statement. This sort of thing isn't really about that (I don't think).

Ooh ooh I want to be Maverique!! That sounds cool and different and unique and special and coveys how I'm just not LIKE everyone else.

Annajohnsdottir · 09/11/2018 09:00

My favourite from the list:

Vapogender: a gender that sort of feels like smoke; can be seen on a shallow level but once you go deeper, it disappears and you are left with no gender and only tiny wisps of what you thought it was

What?! Confused

Blanchedupetitpois · 09/11/2018 09:03

Fine, but I just think you’re getting really wound up by a bunch of kids who are just experimenting and figuring themselves out. It’s not like this is a press release from DfE...

SleepySofa · 09/11/2018 09:05

It’s clearly a pisstake.

ReanimatedSGB · 09/11/2018 09:06

Yeah, the problem with social media is this sort of wholly harmless stuff put together by imaginative-but-self-obsessed kids is accessible to meddlers and whinyarses who can start a moral panic about it. 20 years ago or more this would have been some teenager's diary entry, with little line drawings all over it, perhaps shared with close friends. Didn't you have any daft or would-be-sneered-at-by-adults ideas when you were a teenager?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/11/2018 09:07

Is sneughflake gender up there?

Wellthatsit · 09/11/2018 09:12

Blanche, don't worry. I am not wound up. I am hopeful that lots of people will just find it hilarious (judging by the reactions on here) which was my first reaction too. It's when people react defensively that I get worried - cos that means people really do think this could be legit. (And a lot of this sort of sentiment if not in quite so much detail is actually getting promoted on the BBC, in schools, by Governments (here in Scotland at least) which I think is a bit much and encourages youngsters to indulge themselves.

Am now at work so will have to drop out of the thread for a while. I haven't flounced though...

FruminousBandersnatch · 09/11/2018 09:14

It's a joke, how on earth are people earnestly discussing this?!

"Surgender: having a gender that is 100% one gender but with more of another gender added on top of that"

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/11/2018 09:19

"Surgender: having a gender that is 100% one gender but with more of another gender added on top of that

Sounds fattening.
