To not like dogs

AnonyMousee · 06/11/2018 14:59

I just... don't!!

Most of them smell, get their hairs everywhere, dribble on you, their breath makes me heave, they beg for food and get their food/water everywhere when they eat. They're expensive and needy and annoying.

But why do people get so angry when others don't like dogs? I feel like I can't be honest about dogs when I meet them and their owners, and I always end up pretending to like them. God forbid you say to a dog owners face you don't like dogs, you might aswell just say you've killed a baby!

Same way parents act when I say I don't like their/any children. And Most of them smell, get their hairs everywhere, dribble on you, their breath makes me heave, they beg for food and get their food/water everywhere when they eat. They're expensive and needy and annoying. this is exactly how I would describe children.

BatsAreCool · 06/11/2018 15:03

Agree with Nesssie Grin

AnonyMousee · 06/11/2018 15:04

@Nesssie hahaha touché

No different to children, then?

whateveryousay · 06/11/2018 15:05

I adore dogs, I have two of my own. I wouldn’t be at all offended if someone said they didn’t like them though. And they frequently do.
I’ve got kids too, and people not liking kids doesn’t offend me either.
Why would people find this offensive?
I don’t like cats, have told this to cat-owning friends, and they haven’t seemed to mind?

nornironrock · 06/11/2018 15:08

Not a fan of having any animals in a family home at all. But yes, don't like dogs.

And it drives me crazy when people manufacture a false equivalence between dogs and children. Dogs are not children.

Kemer2018 · 06/11/2018 15:08

Op yanbu.

Doghorsechicken · 06/11/2018 15:09

How you described them just tells me you haven’t spent much time getting to know them. They are part of the family in our house!

adaline · 06/11/2018 15:13

And it drives me crazy when people manufacture a false equivalence between dogs and children. Dogs are not children.

Nobody said they were. They said they were like children. Noisy, smelly, leave hair/saliva everywhere, make a mess when eating and need daily exercise!

hendal · 06/11/2018 15:14

YANBU OP and I say this as a dog lover.
I love my dog, having him has improved my life (anxiety sufferer and seeing him not worrying about or dwelling on his past, as a rescue, helps in a way to remind me to try to not dwell on things I can no longer change).

However I am well aware not everyone likes dogs (I didn’t as a child and my DB is still not keen), and that the liking of dogs is not compulsory. I keep my dog on lead when we’re out and I don’t let him sniff or go up to people as we pass him in the street.
And if someone is visiting my home, I ask if they are ok with dogs. If not, I put my dog to bed - which as a greyhound he is delighted by Grin

TheCatThatGlared · 06/11/2018 15:15

No, they aren't the same. Dogs are much cuter and more appealing than other people's children.

troodiedoo · 06/11/2018 15:18

Yanbu. I love cats but am unbothered if someone else doesn't.

TheCatThatGlared · 06/11/2018 15:21

YANBU to not like dogs though I do get tired of the constant complaining about dogs on MN, even when they haven't done anything, but I'm wondering just how honest you feel the need to be. It's fine to say that you aren't a dog person but I don't think that there's any need to say much beyond that.

Booboostwo · 06/11/2018 15:21

Not liking dogs is one thing. Telling dog owners you don;t like their dogs seems rude and unfriendly. Would you tell a person with children that you don't like children. Keep it to yourself.

BiteyShark · 06/11/2018 15:22

I never take offence if someone doesn't like my dog.

I also find it amusing that as soon as someone points out that young children and dogs are similar someone gets offended. I find toddlers smell, dribble on me and are generally noisey. Just as someone might not like my dog I might not like their toddler.

HarrietKettleWasHere · 06/11/2018 15:25

What are you like with other animals?

Some of my best mates have been animals.

I don’t love the idea of pets (only ever had rescue ones) cats and dogs are different but really against small cages animals and birds.

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 06/11/2018 15:25

I don't get angry if someone doesn't like my dogs. If it's someone I actually want to bother seeing I'll see them without my dogs. If it's someone I don't give a shit about then I'll use my dogs as an excuse not to see them because the chances are my dogs are better company.

There's something about the dog hating threads on here that bring out the arsehole dog owner in me.

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 06/11/2018 15:26

I like dogs. It's the feckless owners I can't stand. Or their snotty, badly behaved brats.

(I do like some children, just to be clear!)

TeddybearBaby · 06/11/2018 15:26

We don’t know how other people feel I guess and to some people their dog / animal is part of that family.

I have animals and children and I wouldn’t care if you wasn’t keen on either. Would find it odd if you mentioned not liking them by name though like you object to them personally 😂

DogMamma · 06/11/2018 15:26

What @Nesssie said!

@nornironrock dogs are not children mine are.

DogMamma · 06/11/2018 15:29

I'd be more offended if some one disliked my dog than my dss, he is 11 hitting puberty and a right pain in the backside at the moment I love him dearly with all my heart I'd put my life on the line to ensure his happiness and safety but I don't like him all the time,
My dogs however. Are well behaved friendly relatively quiet don't stink of sweaty feet even after they had a bath... and they don't answer back!

AnonyMousee · 06/11/2018 15:30

@Doghorsechicken I spent the past 2 years living with a dog (parents house who i moved back to before moving into my own place) and I'm sorry to say but that dog made me feel even more strongly about my distaste for them. Every meal the dog was there, watching and waiting for any dropped food, dog hair magically appears in the most unlikely places - even found them on dinner plates ?!?! Barking at every visitor so constantly waking my OH who works nights up, and oh god the poo and wee in the garden... couldn't bare it!

Maybe im just a bit of a neat/clean freak who can't stand dogs hairs and slobber everywhere

Yabu

DogMamma · 06/11/2018 15:31

@Leighhalfpennysthigh im an arsehole dog owner...always....i do the same use my dogs as an excuse to.going somewhere seeing someone doing something! They've got me out of all sorts of unwanted or unnevcessary things.....kid however causes unwanted and uncessary meeting woth people such as other parents and children at parties etc hahaha god I am horrid

Grrrrrrt · 06/11/2018 15:32

I don't dislike dogs but I am scared of them after being attacked by an off-lead dog, that went for my face (ultimately getting my arms). The dog in question had apparently never done anything like that before.

I'd had similar not too long before, except that it was a small dog, on-leash, that went for my knee but didn't break the skin. The same apology and never done anything like that before.

I know the majority of dogs are sweet, but you just never know and so I can't be comfortable around them. Unfortunately they're unavoidable if you want to go out in public.
