To not like dogs

AnonyMousee · 06/11/2018 14:59

I just... don't!!

Most of them smell, get their hairs everywhere, dribble on you, their breath makes me heave, they beg for food and get their food/water everywhere when they eat. They're expensive and needy and annoying.

But why do people get so angry when others don't like dogs? I feel like I can't be honest about dogs when I meet them and their owners, and I always end up pretending to like them. God forbid you say to a dog owners face you don't like dogs, you might aswell just say you've killed a baby!

I don't like dogs. Or cats. Or sheep. Or horses.. or anything that's not human really. Although somewhat bizarrely spiders don't bother me.

I'm actively scared of dogs but am uncomfortable around animals in general. I have no problem with telling my friends, all dog/cat owners, that I would rather not be around their pets. I don't want to be left in the same room as an animal on my own. I have had to compromise of course, as all my friends own pets. But they also accept my limitations with animals and don't let their pets clamber around or on me and don't leave me alone with them.

I always check before going somewhere new what pets they have and if they are able to keep them away from me. If they can't, or don't want to, then I don't go. There is never any hard feelings on either part.

I am a nice person. I love children. I am kind to people. Not liking animals does not make me a suspicious or horrible character.

fieldgold · 06/11/2018 18:14

I’m ok with dogs as long as I can look at them from a good few paces away! Am uncomfortable with them at close quarters especially indoors though. It reminds me of having to goo goo gaa gaa at babies too. They are not mine after all!

Anyway I personally think there are just far too many dogs around these days, they are everywhere! Far more dogs around than kids I tell ya!

nokidshere · 06/11/2018 18:15

You cannot equate not liking an animal to not having compassion.

I would never hurt a living thing, human or otherwise. I wouldn't want to see animals in pain or being badly treated. And there are many pet owners who treat their animals badly whilst professing to love them.

Deadbudgie · 06/11/2018 18:21

You can like what you like of course you can but telling someone that you hate their dog which will probably be seen as one of the family, loved and cherished a an intergalactic part of their lifestyle is downright rude and probably explains why I like dog people much more than cat people😂

helacells · 06/11/2018 18:21

YANBU dogs are pretty gross

legolimb · 06/11/2018 18:24

I don't not like dogs but I don't want one in my house, car or garden.

Nor do I want to be instantly covered in hair if I visit a dog owner's house.

If people were genuinely animal lovers then they wouldn't keep them as pets. (Or eat them either I suppose).

BumDisease · 06/11/2018 18:31

You must be new here op if you genuinely didn't think there'd be pages of people queuing up to reassure you. The only thing MN hates more than dogs is fat people.

Shriek · 06/11/2018 18:32

I don't assume anyone else loves mine, or wants them anywhere near, certainly not jumping up or slobbering on. I keep mine away from other ppl. I get the opposite, can we stroke, say hello, especially the younger age groups who are always asking to touch and say hello to and when I prevent mine going near others most them encourage ddog to come over and say hello properly then surprised when I say ddog has to know that for some meeting a ddog is highly undesirable! I get weird looks about that, but nobody has to love ddogs or even like them. I'm not really into others ddogs, or dcats, or other wee animals necessarily. I love my own to bits

littleteethies · 06/11/2018 18:35

What a charmer you are

MrsJBaptiste · 06/11/2018 18:35

My dog is beautiful and has a brilliant personality I would be pretty astounded at anyone actually saying they didn't like him, even the non doggy people. He gets so many positive comments and praise more or less every time he's out

See, it's comments like this! Why do some people just not get that I do not like animals. There isn't one animal that I would ever look at and think "they're cute" and this includes your dog.

Shriek · 06/11/2018 18:39

As I said already, I do get loads of keen petters! The rest of the time we mind our own business, there wouldn't be any need to point out to anyone how much you hate ddogs, would there?

PennyArcade · 06/11/2018 18:41

I totally get that. I love dogs. I've had many breeds through the years. Im not in love with all breeds. Some breeds do it for me.... Others just don't, and never will.. There we go. That's life

RedneckStumpy · 06/11/2018 18:44

I don’t care if you like my dogs or not. But if my dogs don’t like you I trust their judgement.

BertrandRussell · 06/11/2018 19:00

". The only thing MN hates more than dogs is fat people."

Really? Mumsnet seems to me to be a dog lover's paradise. As witness this thread!

BertrandRussell · 06/11/2018 19:04

"I don’t care if you like my dogs or not. But if my dogs don’t like you I trust their judgement."

Now this is the sort of statement that gives dog owners a bad name!

InertPotato · 06/11/2018 19:06

I personally think there are just far too many dogs around these days

Too many people, surely.

MakeAHouseAHome · 06/11/2018 19:10

BertrandandRussell why does that give dog owners a bad name!? I fully trust my dogs judgement on who they do or don't like. I also would never shut my dogs away for someone, don't like them, don't come in my house.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 06/11/2018 19:17

I also would never shut my dogs away for someone, don't like them, don't come in my house.

Also giving dog owners a bad name.

AnonyMousee · 06/11/2018 19:20

@MakeAHouseAHome so a perfectly lovely human being wouldn't be acceptable to you because your dog turned his nose up at them? What if they just had a funny smell that your dog didn't like?

Also, think of all the horrible people in the world that are criminals etc , the ones that have dogs... clearly dogs aren't psychic and know if someone is a bad person or not.

nellieellie · 06/11/2018 19:22

Mmmm. Well, yanbu to not like dogs, but I never really understand why people don’t. To me, dogs are just - love. They love us, trust us, are always pleased to see us, never ask difficult questions or make us feel bad. Just acceptance. They are also completely reliable in their affections.
Also research in just the last few years suggests that dogs evolved from wolves over 35,000 years ago, before agriculture, and that they may even have helped us evolve into modern man. Some have also suggested that liking dogs is genetic which may explain why people seem to be in one camp or another.

BertrandRussell · 06/11/2018 19:23

I love my dog. She is utterly gorgeous. However, she does not have any special powers or superior judgment. She loves one of our postman. He may be the most awful person in the world- but he has treats in his pocket and I have told him he can give her one every time he comes to our door....

nellieellie · 06/11/2018 19:24

Also, OP, you would like my dog. You really would. He’s flippin gorgeous!

Rayn · 06/11/2018 19:28

I am with you there. I am not a dog lover and I have tried. I just does not feel right and like you said. It does not make me a bad person. I find animals hard work and I don't get any pleasure from them! I wish I did but I just don't! No reason why.

Shriek · 06/11/2018 19:53

Rayn interesting. Did you have any animals growing up? That to OP too?

fieldgold · 06/11/2018 20:21

The population of UK is what 60million or so.

If 1% of those people own a dog that makes 600,000 dogs. Yikes!

And I am probably grossly underestimating the doggy numbers too.

There just isn't enough room for people anymore, let alone dogs.

Something has to be done for doggy population control. Someone should do something, as I wave my fan in my red face whilst clutching my pearls simultaneously. No dog could ever do that.
