To think that Soup is a meal?

As in a decent, homemade Minestone soup we are planning to eat tonight

I was merrily chopping ingredients for dinner tonight, when my mother facetime called us.

Mother: oh sorry, didn't mean to disturb you
Me: thats fine, im only chopping ingredients for dinner tonight
Mother: ooh what are you having?
Me: Minestone soup
Mother: what? soup? for dinner?
Me: erm yep, why not? we like Minestone soup
Mother: (still gobsmacked) what, all of you?

And so on and so on for about 5 minutes. Its a Jamie Oliver recipe, with lots of vegetables in, bacon, harricot beans, and pasta. Hearty, and filling after a day of diy and walking.

If I had called it Minestrone casserole, containing the same ingredients, im sure she would have declared in a marvellous idea. Its just because it contained the word 'soup'

So, is 'soup' dinner for you also?

I'll accept it as dinner if there is decent bread too.

Wisteria1979 · 03/11/2018 16:14

I am with you and also love that particular soup! I know a lot of people thought that wouldn't consider soup a proper meal though, no matter how much stuff you put in it....

TeddyIsaHe · 03/11/2018 16:14

Of course it’s fine! Yours sounds delicious and really filling. Dd and I often have soup in winter, it’s so comforting and easy when it’s cold and dark.

Talkingfrog · 03/11/2018 16:14

Sounds fine to me. Can I come to dinner at yours please Grin

Deadringer · 03/11/2018 16:14

Not for me, i am always starving after soup no matter what is in it. I am a hungry hippo though.

SilentIsla · 03/11/2018 16:14

First course or lunch food.

LettuceP · 03/11/2018 16:15

Well yes I think a soup like that is a meal. I wouldn't have bog standard tomato soup for a meal though unless I was on a diet, and I'd be hungry soon afterwards.

AdultHumanFemale · 03/11/2018 16:15

Yep. Absolutely a meal :)

BikeRunSki · 03/11/2018 16:15

Soup and crumble. Cheap and filling. We have this combo a lot. But without pudding or bread, i’mmnit cinvincrd soup alone would cut it in this house.

EmUntitled · 03/11/2018 16:16

I wouldn't usually consider soup a dinner, but we usually just have standard soup like tomato or chicken so it's not particularly filling. I think your soup does sound like more of a meal as it contains beans etc.

Enjoy your dinner!

megletthesecond · 03/11/2018 16:17

Yanbu.
Big bowl of soup and buttered bread is always fine by me.

Grimbles · 03/11/2018 16:17

If you have to chew then it's a meal Grin

Urbanbeetler · 03/11/2018 16:18

It sounds delicious and a healthy, hearty filling supper.

Birdsgottafly · 03/11/2018 16:18

Mushroom or Tomato, I don't consider a big meal.

But with lentils and lots of veg, served with bread, yes.

Yours is because of the pasta etc.

LittleBookofCalm · 03/11/2018 16:19

My dm is making soup for lunch tomorrow, I fear ds will be disappointed if I told him

Crunchymum · 03/11/2018 16:19

Nope it's not a dinner to me.

I am not a soup fan at all though (and I'm a greedy fecker Grin)

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 03/11/2018 16:20

I love a minestrone soup and haven't had one for ages - you've tempted me now OP!

Soups fine for a meal, I have to have it with some decent bread otherwise I'm still hungry after or 20 mins later.

Dontfeellikeaskeleton · 03/11/2018 16:20

Ironically eating soup whilst reading this.

Yes, it's a meal.

As you say, if you'd have called it Italian casserole she would have been satisfied.

ToEarlyForDecorations · 03/11/2018 16:22

Oh not this again - soup is not a meal.

There was a thread on this subject a couple of years ago. Bloody class was that descended into.

Caprisunorange · 03/11/2018 16:22

Yes it is, but it’s undoubtedly a light meal

MamaLovesMango · 03/11/2018 16:24

We had tomato soup and cheese on toast last night.

It was more than good enough for us!

londonmummy1966 · 03/11/2018 16:26

We had pumpkin soup and crusty bread for supper yesterday - yum. And pea and bacon soup for lunch on Thursday.

I think it depends on the soup - so a big hearty pot of minestrone or chowder yes but a thin bisque is just a starter.

LittleBearPad · 03/11/2018 16:28

It’s lunch. I wouldn’t consider it dinner. I realise that’s irrational.

sonlypuppyfat · 03/11/2018 16:29

I get this as well, I put a whole ham hock in a ton of veg and pasta. And I get "soup!" Yes! It's not a broth just more liquid stew ðŸ˜
